A text usually provides more information than a random sequence of clauses: It combines sentence-level information to larger units which are glued together by coherence relations that may induce a hierarchical discourse structure. Since linguists have begun to investigate texts as more complex units of linguistic communication, it has been controversially discussed what the appropriate level of analysis of discourse structure ought to be and what the criteria to identify (minimal) discourse units are. Linguistic structure-and more precisely, the extraction and integration of syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic information-is shown to be at the center of text processing and discourse comprehension. However, its role in the establishment of basic building blocks for a coherent discourse is still a subject of debate. This collection addresses these issues using various methodological approaches. It presents current results in theoretical, diachronic, experimental as well as computational research on structuring information in discourse.

Traditionally, anaphor resolution focused on structural cues of the antecedent. Recently, the interaction between discourse factors and information structure affecting antecedent salience has been more thoroughly explored. This volume depicts selected peer-reviewed research papers that tackle issues in anaphor resolution from theoretical, empirical and experimental perspectives. These collected articles present a wide spectrum of cross-linguistic data (Dutch, German, Spanish, Turkish, Yurakare) and also offer new results from L1 and L2 acquisition studies. Data interpretation span from typological to psycholinguistic viewpoints and are related to recent developments in linguistic theory. One data analysis puts the issue of anaphor resolution in a historical context. The experimental findings are complemented by reviews of the current literature on the role of discourse units. This volume gives a comprehensive overview of the state of discussion how the interaction between information structure and contextual discourse affects salience. Phanomene im Bereich von Valenz, Argumentstruktur, Diathesen, Kollokationen und Phrasemen dienen von jeher zur Bestimmung der Schnittstelle zwischen Lexikon und Grammatik. Mittlerweile sind allerdings grundsatzliche Zweifel an der Berechtigung der sprachtheoretischen Zweiteilung in Lexikon und Grammatik aufgekommen, auch weil die Entwicklungen im Bereich empirischer Methodik einen zunehmend besseren Einblick in die differenzierte Natur sprachlichen Wissens ermoeglichen und uns mit semiproduktiven Prozessen, graduellen Kategoriezuordnungen, instabilen sprachlichen Mustern und frequenzgesteuerten Usualisierungen eigentlich regelhafter Strukturen konfrontieren. Die strikte Grenze zwischen der Grammatik als dem Ort des syntaktisch-semantisch Regelhaften und dem Lexikon als dem Repositorium des syntaktisch-semantisch Idiosynkratischen ist damit in Frage gestellt. Die Beitrage des Bandes betrachten den Bereich, wo Regelhaftes und Idiosynkratisches miteinander verwoben sind, sie fuhren Kontroversen zum Status von Konstruktionen und dem Verhaltnis zwischen Lexikon und Grammatik, und sie zeigen, wie empirische Methoden der Korpuslinguistik, Psycho- und Neurolinguistik und Spracherwerbsforschung zur Klarung dieser Kontroversen beitragen.

this volume studies how speakers deal with loanwords from foreign languages. Are foreign words adapted in pronunciation, writing, flexion and syntax to the recipient language or do they keep characteristics of the language of their origin? Do loan units change the system of the recipient language or do they get changed by it? Methodical considerations to identify foreign words supplement these studies on German, Polish, Hebrew and Japanese.
