Rosalind Edwards, John Goodwin, Henrietta O'Connor, Ann Phoenix
R2,758 Discovery Miles 27 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book asks the important question; Can the by-products of research activity be treated as data and of research interest in themselves? This groundbreaking interdisciplinary volume considers the analytic value of a range of 'by-products' of social research and reading. These include electronically captured paradata on survey administration, notes written in the margins of research documents and literary texts, and fieldnotes and ephemera produced by social researchers. Revealing the relational nature of paradata, marginalia and fieldnotes, contributions examine how the craft of studying and analyzing these by-products offers insight into the intellectual, social and ethical processes underpinning the activities of research and reading. Unique and engaging, this book is a must read for social researchers and sociologists, narrative analysts, literary scholars and historians. Bridging methodological boundaries, it will also prove of great value to quantitative and qualitative methodologists alike. Contributors include: K. Bell, J. Boddy, R.G. Burgess, G.B. Durrant, R. Edwards, H. Elliott, E. Fahmy, J. Goodwin, H.J. Jackson, D. Kilburn, O. Maslovskaya, H. O'Connor, A. Phoenix, W.H. Sherman

Ann Phoenix, Barbara Tizard
R1,611 Discovery Miles 16 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The number of people in racially mixed relationships has grown steadily over the last thirty years, yet these people often feel stigmatised and unhappy about their identities.
The first edition of Black White or Mixed Race? was a ground-breaking study: this revised edition uses new literature to consider what is now known about racialised identities and changes in the official use of 'mixed' categories. All new developments are placed in a historical framework and in the context of up-to-date literature on mixed parentage in Britain and the USA.
Based on research with young people from a range of social backgrounds the book examines their attitudes to black and white people; their identity; their cultural origins; their friendships; their experiences of racism. This was the first study to concentrate on adolescents of black and white parentage and it continues to provide unique insights into their identities. It is a valuable resource for all those concerned with social work and policy.

Young Masculinities - Understanding Boys in Contemporary Society (Hardcover): Stephen Frosh, Ann Phoenix, Rob Pattman Young Masculinities - Understanding Boys in Contemporary Society (Hardcover)
Stephen Frosh, Ann Phoenix, Rob Pattman
R4,697 Discovery Miles 46 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How do boys see themselves? Their peers? The adult world? What are their aspirations, their fears? How do they feel about their own masculinity? About style, 'race', homophobia? About football? This book examines aspects of 'young masculinities' that have become central to contemporary social thought, paying attention to psychological issues as well as to social policy concerns. Centring on a study involving in-depth exploration, through individual and group intererviews, the authors bring to light the way boys in the early years of secondary schooling conceptualise and articulate their experiences of themselves, their peers and the adult world. The book includes discussion of boys' aspirations and anxieties, their feelings of pride and loss. As such, it offers an unusually detailed set of insights into the experiential world inhabited by these boys - how they see themselves, how girls see them, what they wish for and fear, where they feel their 'masculinity' to be advantageous and where it inhibits other potential experiences. In describing this material, the authors explore questions such as the place of violence in young people's lives, the functions of 'hardness', of homophobia and football, boys' underachievement in school, and the pervasive racialisation of masculine identity construction. Young Masculinities will be invaluable to researchers in psychology, sociology, gender and youth studies, as well as to those devising social policy on boys and young men. Working Out - New Directions For Women's Studies (Hardcover): Hilary Hinds, Ann Phoenix, Jackie Stacey Working Out - New Directions For Women's Studies (Hardcover)
Hilary Hinds, Ann Phoenix, Jackie Stacey
R4,260 Discovery Miles 42 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Addressing issues of long-standing concern, but from new perspectives, this book contributes to existing key debates about sexuality, paid work, the development process, equal opportunities legislation, lesbian history and women's writing. Extending beyond disciplinary boundaries many of the contributions address issues such as the politics and practice of women's studies, and the specificity of women's oppression within particular national and international contexts. Theoretical, epistemological and methodological questions are analyzed from a variety of perspectives which frequently defy existing categorizations. Moving beyond the previous positions of Marxist, radical or liberal feminism many contributions challenge the boundaries of existing debates and set new agendas for the future. Whilst recognizing the achievements of women's studies, this collection contributes to the continuing process of critical self-reflection.

Available Open Access under CC-BY licence. How do environmental policies link to dynamic and relational family practices for children and parents? This Policy Press Short presents innovative cross-national research into how 'environment' is understood and negotiated within families, and how this plays out in everyday lives. Based on an ESRC study that involved creative, qualitative work with families in India and the UK who live in different contexts, this book illuminates how environmental practices are negotiated within families, and how they relate to values, identities and society. In doing so, it contributes to understanding of the ways in which families and childhood are constructed as sites for intervention in climate change debates. In an area that is increasingly of concern to governments, NGOs and the general public, this timely research is crucial for developing effective responses to climate change.

This volume investigates a key area of theoretical interest within contemporary feminist and poststructuralist theory, paying particular attention to feminist psychology.

Recognizing that feminist researchers have a long-standing commitment to conducting research from feminist standpoints, the contributors consider the tensions between this and the poststructuralist argument that research and emancipatory politics can flow from personal and political differences. The volume considers questions and developments on giving voice', and explores arguments and theoretical positions concerning power and subjectivity, paying attention to how these inform research practice.

Shifting Identities Shifting Racisms - A Feminism & Psychology Reader (Paperback): Kum-Kum Bhavnani, Ann Phoenix Shifting Identities Shifting Racisms - A Feminism & Psychology Reader (Paperback)
Kum-Kum Bhavnani, Ann Phoenix
R1,761 Discovery Miles 17 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection makes an important contribution to contemporary feminist and psychological debates on identities and racisms. It addresses issues of commonalities, differences, subjectivities and the contradictory nature of positionings which are central concerns for feminist and anti-racist politics.

Leading feminists examine: the ways in which psychology has reproduced racism; the complexity of issues of identities and racisms which are shown to be multiple, constantly variable and renegotiable; the need to problematize and unpack whiteness'; and the problems of identity politics both in terms of explanatory power and political action.
