The ageing of our population is a key societal issue across the
globe. Although people are living longer, they need to be living
longer in good health to continue to enjoy quality of life and
independence and to prevent rises in health and social care costs.
This timely and ground-breaking volume will provide an up-to-date
overview of the factors that promote physical activity in later
life. Despite advances in the fields of gerontology and geriatrics,
sports and exercise science, sociology, health psychology, and
public health, knowledge is largely contained within disciplines as
reflected in the current provision of academic texts on this
subject. To truly address the present and substantial societal
challenges of population ageing, a multidisciplinary and
collaborative approach is required. This handbook will inform
researchers, students, and practitioners on the current evidence
base for what physical activities need to be promoted among older
people and how they can be implemented to maximise engagement. This
handbook will be an invaluable resource for researchers,
practitioners, policy makers, and students across the social
sciences.

Christchurch is very prettily situated; for although it stands on a
perfectly flat plain, towards the sea there are the Port Hills, and
the town itself is picturesque, owing to the quantities of trees
and the irregular form of the wooden houses; and as a background we
have the most magnificent chain of mountains--the back-bone of the
island--running from north to south, the highest peaks nearly
always covered with snow, even after such a hot summer as this has
been.
I expected every moment to hear the revolver go off, but mercifully
it did not do so; and as his thorny bed was hardly to be endured,
F---soon kicked himself off it, and before I could realize that he
was unhurt, had scrambled to his feet, and was rushing off, crying
in school-boy glee, "That will fetch him out" That (the rock)
certainly did fetch him (the pig) out in a moment, and Pincher
availed himself of the general confusion to seize hold of his
enemy's hind leg, which he never afterwards let go.

Lady (Mary Anne) Barker (1831-1911) wrote these letters to orecord
the expeditions, adventures, and emergencies diversifying the daily
life of the wife of a New Zealand sheep-farmer.o It was a time in
New Zealand when women shared with men the loneliness, difficulties
and hazards of pioneering. Barker s letters show an excitement for
her adventure in a new land and her delight in the things she saw.
