Variation in Time and Space: Observing the World through Corpora is
a collection of articles that address the theme of linguistic
variation in English in its broadest sense. Current research in
English language presented in the book explores a fascinating
number of topics, whose unifying element is the corpus linguistic
methodology. Part I of this volume, Meaning in Time and Space,
introduces the two dimensions of variation - time and space -
relating them to the negotiation of meaning in discourse and
questions of intertextuality. Part II, Variation in Time,
approaches the English language from a diachronic point of view;
the time periods covered vary considerably, ranging from 16th
century up to present-day; so do the genres explored. Part III,
Variation in Space, focuses on global varieties of English and
includes a contrastive point of view. The range of topics is again
broad - from specific lexico-grammatical structures to the
variation in academic English, combining the regional and genre
dimensions of variation. This is a timely volume that shows the
breadth and depth in current corpus-based research of English.
This text offers an introduction to words and corpus linguistics.
From this foundation it explores the much wider issues that are
inevitably raised but somehow marginalized in lexicology (the study
of words) and corpus linguistics: how are individual words
integrated into language? What are the real benefits of studying
the large quantities of text now available in corpora? How do we
best conceptualise meaning itself?;The book begins with a survey of
lexicology by Halliday. He reviews basic issues in defining and
understanding the word as a unit of language, but also includes
brief accounts of lexicology in India, China and the Islamic world.
Halliday introduces the notion of "corpus" and opens the way for a
rethinking of the nature of words and language. The central section
of the book, by Teubert and Yallop, expands a number of traditional
issues in the study of words and their meanings, from common
misconceptions about the "real meaning" of words to the
relationship between language and reality and the problems raised
by comparing different languages. This section both problematizes
the issues and develops a functional and social perspective on
meaning.; In the third and final se
Children’s fiction reflects social values and stereotypes, and it
shapes what children learn about the world. Providing an
interdisciplinary perspective on children’s fiction and
childhood, this book offers a fresh insight into the key issues in
fiction for children, such as gender, social stereotypes, embodied
and spatial experience, and emotions. Connecting classic
children’s texts such as Alice in Wonderland with contemporary
fiction including Harry Potter, the book innovatively brings
together perspectives from corpus linguistics, stylistics,
cognitive linguistics, literary and cultural studies, and human
geography. Chapter authors also include a novelist and a creative
practitioner. Divided into two parts – Experiencing Texts, and
Fiction and the Real World – the book highlights the important
link between fictional stories and real life, and explores a range
of approaches to experiencing texts, including a cross-linguistic
view through translation and corpus linguistic methods for the
study of literary texts. The materiality of texts is also
investigated, including the spaces they take up in libraries, their
cultural history moulded through performances, and the different
reading environments that shape childhood, such as fashion and
urban spaces. Connecting academic research with texts of cultural
currency, the book casts light on the role of literature in how
children construct the world around them.
This readable introductory textbook presents a concise survey of
corpus linguistics. The first section of the book introduces the
key concepts in corpus linguistics and provides a brief history of
the discipline. The second section expands the study of language
and shows how corpus linguistics can advance our study of words and
meaning, the benefits of studying the corpora, and how meaning can
best be conceptualised. Explaining corpus linguistics in easy to
understand terms, and including a glossary and suggestions for
further reading, this book will be useful to students trying to get
a grasp on this subject.
