The nexus between travel, writing and media in the contemporary world is dense: travel practice is increasingly interwoven with media; representations in old and new media are co-present and converge. Digitisation has had a profound impact on the practice and mediation of travel, but this volume aims to show that travel and its representation have always been enlaced with media. With contributions by experts in literary and cultural studies, journalism studies and informatics, the book takes a multi- and interdisciplinary approach and covers a wide range of media, from the hand-crafted album to social media. It illustrates how current transformations invite us to revisit earlier periods of travel writing and their media environments, and to explore the ways in which contemporary forms of mediation are prefigured by earlier practices and forms. The book addresses readers interested in travel writing, travel studies and cultural studies. The Virgin Mary continues to attract devotees to her images and shrines. In Moved by Mary, anthropologists, geographers and historians explore how people and groups around the world identify and join with Mary in their struggle against social injustice, and how others mobilize Mary to impose ideas and rules and legitimize acts of violence and suppression. Far from an outdated practice of little relevance to the modern world, Marian pilgrimage expresses the deep and urgent concerns of a wide range of people. With examples of Marian pilgrimages from all over the world, Moved by Mary explores the ways in which men and women of different ages and religious, political, social-economic and ethnic backgrounds empower themselves to deal with modern-day issues with MaryAs help. The ethnographic cases reveal the cultural and devotional variation of Marian pilgrimage, but also global similarities. Collectively, the contributors to Moved by Mary show how in many places religion dramatically suffuses everyday life.
Jean-Luc Godard writes and directs this French crime drama starring Anna Karina, Claude Brasseur and Sami Frey. Jean-Luc Godard's homage to Hollywood pulp fiction movies of the 1940s which also gave its name in the 1990s to Quentin Tarantino's production company. Franz (Sami Frey) and Arthur (Claude Brasseur), a couple of Parisian streetwise kids team up with the shy Odile (Anna Karina) to plan a robbery. The trio's over-developed fantasies come together whilst visiting the Louvre, cafes and even play-acting shoot-outs and it soon becomes apparent that the robbery is definitely not going to go according to plan.
One of Jean-Luc Godard's most reknowned films in which Ferdinand (Jean-Paul Belmondo) leaves his wife and child and runs off with the babysitter Marianne (Anna Karina). The pair head south to find Marianne's brother, with Ferdinand getting caught up in Marianne's crimes along the way as they both spiral toward destruction. Memorable for Raoul Coutard's deep and lush photography, it offers a spontaneous musical sequence under the pine trees, elements of the gangster genre and a tragic account of the transience of love, meanwhile Godard manages to address the nature of the film medium itself.
