This book discusses normal sex-related differences in lung
structure and function and the role these differences play in lung
disease. New research on the effects of sex hormone signaling on
specific cell types of the lung has begun to reveal how these
hormones may drive or prevent lung disease. Expertly written
chapters examine the effects of sex hormones on normal pulmonary
structure and function, hormone signaling in lung health, and
specific diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,
asthma, pulmonary hypertension, and lung cancer. Gender, Sex
Hormones, and Respiratory Disease: A Comprehensive Guide focuses on
our current understanding and the gaps in research, with
suggestions for future directions and implications for therapy.
This book is a useful reference for pulmonologists and researchers
and will prompt further inquiry aimed at improving overall lung
health.
Understanding Pope Francis: Message, Media, andAudienceoffers
several chapters which illuminate the often misunderstood, but
widely discussed, leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope
Francis. With 1.3 billion baptized members living throughout every
continent, communication by and about him is a subject deserving to
be understood. As technology makes the "global village" predicted
by Marshall McLuhan more apparent, the complexities of leading an
organization across geographic boundaries with differing ideas
about culture and governance present great need to be nuanced,
indeed cautious, about messages communicated across diverse media
platforms and consumed by divergent audiences. This book lay bare
the messages Pope Francis produces, the way that varying
platforms/media present those messages, and the complex ways in
which audiences formulate their interpretations.
Introduction to Traveling Waves is an invitation to research
focused on traveling waves for undergraduate and masters level
students. Traveling waves are not typically covered in the
undergraduate curriculum, and topics related to traveling waves are
usually only covered in research papers, except for a few texts
designed for students. This book includes techniques that are not
covered in those texts. Through their experience involving
undergraduate and graduate students in a research topic related to
traveling waves, the authors found that the main difficulty is to
provide reading materials that contain the background information
sufficient to start a research project without an expectation of an
extensive list of prerequisites beyond regular undergraduate
coursework. This book meets that need and serves as an entry point
into research topics about the existence and stability of traveling
waves. Features Self-contained, step-by-step introduction to
nonlinear waves written assuming minimal prerequisites, such as an
undergraduate course on linear algebra and differential equations.
Suitable as a textbook for a special topics course, or as
supplementary reading for courses on modeling. Contains numerous
examples to support the theoretical material. Supplementary MATLAB
codes available via GitHub.
In recent years, the terms "ethics," "politics," "performativity,"
and "experience" have proliferated throughout the discourse of the
humanities. However, it is rarely noted that their contemporary
understanding has been shaped by the works of Jacques Derrida, who
has employed all these concepts since the mid-1960s. The aim of
this book is to present the lesser discussed topics of Derrida's
thought - not only as the creator of a specific mode of
interpretation called "deconstruction" but also as an initiator of
recent ethical and political reflection, a pioneer of performatics,
and a precursor of current research on experience. At the same
time, the book provides a panorama of the most important changes in
the humanities of the last thirty years, and in particular - the
ethical, performative, and empirical turns.
Previously perceived as a local, technical issue for governments,
waste management is now also a global, socio-political process
involving complex patterns of multi-level governance. Yet these
geographical complexities have not previously been considered in
any detail. This book examines the neglected geographies of waste
management, in particular, the integral processes of
trans-localization and politicization that are emerging in waste
networks. Illustrated by in-depth case studies from New Zealand and
Ireland, it critically analyzes the interaction between political
scales of governing waste, from the local to the supra-national
level. It also looks at the impact of wider systems of governance,
civil society and the private sector on waste management policy and
practices. In doing so, the book provides a better understanding of
waste governance and recommendations for better management of the
waste sector in the future.
Sustainable consumption is a central research topic in academic
discourses of sustainable development and global environmental
change. Informed by a number of disciplinary perspectives, this
book is structured around four key themes in sustainable
consumption research: Living, Moving, Dwelling and Futures. The
collection successfully balances theoretical insights with grounded
case studies, on mobility, heating, washing and eating practices,
and concludes by exploring future sustainable consumption research
pathways and policy recommendations. Theoretical frameworks are
advanced throughout the volume, especially in relation to social
practice theory, theories of behavioural change and innovative
visioning and backcasting methodologies. This groundbreaking book
draws on some conceptual approaches which move beyond the
responsibility of the individual consumer to take into account
wider social, economic and political structures and processes in
order to highlight both possibilities for and challenges to
sustainable consumption. This approach enables students and
policy-makers alike to easily recognise the applicability of social
science theories.
The experiences of African Americans in urban communities are
unique, and to be truly understood require an in-depth appreciation
of the interface between micro- and macro-level factors. This text,
an outgrowth of an actual urban social work curriculum with a focus
on the African-American experience, field education, community
engagement, and practice, presents a framework for urban social
work practice that encompasses a deep understanding of the
challenges faced by this community. From a perspective based on
empowerment, strengths, and resilience; cultural competence; and
multi-culturalism, the book delivers proven strategies for social
work practice with the urban African-American population.

As children wrestle with culture through their games, recess
itself has become a battleground for the control of children's
time. Based on dozens of interviews and the observation of over a
thousand children in a racially integrated, working-class public
school, "Recess Battles" is a moving reflection of urban childhood
at the turn of the millennium. The book debunks myths about recess
violence and challenges the notion that schoolyard play is a waste
of time. The author videotaped and recorded children of the Mill
School in Philadelphia from 1991 to 2004 and asked them to offer
comments as they watched themselves at play. These sessions in
"Recess Battles" raise questions about adult power and the changing
frames of class, race, ethnicity, and gender. The grown-ups' clear
misunderstanding of the complexity of children's play is contrasted
with the richness of the children's folk traditions.
"Recess Battles" is an ethnographic study of lighthearted games,
a celebratory presentation of children's folklore and its
conflicts, and a philosophical text concerning the ironies of
everyday childhood. Rooted in video micro-ethnography and the
traditions of theorists such as Bourdieu, Willis, and Bateson,
"Recess Battles" is written for a lay audience with extensive
academic footnotes. International scholar Dr. Brian Sutton-Smith
contributes a foreword, and the children themselves illustrate the
text with black and white paintings.

This book is a compendium of texts by international authors which
reflect on Tadeusz Kantor's art in a broad range of contexts. The
studies include works of prominent art historians, theatrologists
and artists. The present revisiting of Kantor's artistic oeuvre
reflects a contemporary historiographic approach. The authors place
value on individual memory and consider contemporary art outside
the traditional boundaries of particular artistic genres. The
studies employ the latest strategies for researching theatrical
performance as autonomous statements, without a literary anchor.
Thanks to this approach, the eschatological and historical issues,
crucial to the sphere of reference of Kantor's Theatre of Death,
have acquired a new presence - as art that liberates thinking in
the here-and-now.
Evolution has not typically been recognised by linguists as a
constraining factor when developing linguistic theories. This book
demonstrates that our theories of language must reflect the fact
that language has evolved. It critiques a currently dominant
framework in the field of linguistics - the Minimalist Program - by
showing how it fails to take evolution into account. It approaches
the question of the evolution of human language in a novel way by
applying findings from the field of evolutionary biology to
language. Key properties associated with typically evolving systems
are identified in language, and the shortcomings of the Minimalist
Program in its outright rejection of these features are exposed.
The book will be of interest to individual researchers and advanced
students in linguistics, psychology, biology, anthropology and
cognitive science.
While there have been many studies devoted to the major heroes and
heroines of Homeric epic, among them Achilles, Odysseus, and Helen,
the figure of Menelaus has remained notably overlooked in this
strand of scholarship. Menelaus in the Archaic Period is the first
book-length study of the Homeric character, taking a
multidisciplinary approach to his depiction in archaic Greek
poetry, art, and cult through detailed analysis of ancient
literary, visual, and material evidence. The volume is divided into
two parts, the first of which examines the portrayal of Menelaus in
the Homeric poems as a unique 'personality' with an integral role
to play in each narrative, as depicted through typical patterns of
speech and action and through intertextual allusion. The second
part explores his representation both in other poetry of the
archaic period - including lyric poetry and Simonides' 'Plataea
elegy ' - and also archaic art and local Sparta cult, drawing on
the literary, archaeological, and inscriptional evidence for the
cult of Menelaus with Helen at Therapne. The depiction of Menelaus
in archaic art is a particular focal point: Chapter 4 provides a
methodology for the interpretation of heroic narrative on archaic
Greek vases through iconography and inscriptions and establishes
his conventional visual 'identity' on black figure Athenian vases,
while an annotated catalogue of images details those that fall
outside the 'norm'. Menelaus emerges from this comprehensive study
as a unique and likeable character whose relationship with Helen
was a popular theme in both epic poetry and vase painting, but one
whose portrayal evinced a significant narrative range, with an
array of continuities and differences in how he was represented by
the Greeks, not only within the archaic period but also in
comparison to classical Athens.
