This book presents selected papers from the 18th International Conference on Global Research and Education, Inter-Academia 2019, held in Budapest and Balatonfured on September 4-7, 2019. The main goal of the conference was to provide an international forum for reviewing and assessing recent trends in both fundamental and applied research. In addition to sparking interest in recent research findings, the conference aimed to strengthen cooperation among the partners of the Inter-Academia community in the pursuit of new theoretical and practical research advances. The book contains a selection of papers based on lectures presented at the Inter-Academia 2019 conference and covering hot and challenging topics in the fields of machine intelligence and computer science, modeling and simulation, measurement, monitoring, and identification, electronics and nanoelectronics, bio- and environmental engineering, chemical processes and material science, together with related educational aspects. The book provides a sample of research on the innovative theory and applications of soft computing paradigms. The idea of Soft Computing was initiated in 1981 when Professor Zadeh published his first paper on soft data analysis and constantly evolved ever since. Professor Zadeh defined Soft Computing as the fusion of the fields of fuzzy logic (FL), neural network theory (NN) and probabilistic reasoning (PR), with the latter subsuming belief networks, evolutionary computing including DNA computing, chaos theory and parts of learning theory into one multidisciplinary system. As Zadeh said the essence of soft computing is that unlike the traditional, hard computing, soft computing is aimed at an accommodation with the pervasive imprecision of the real world. Thus, the guiding principle of soft computing is to exploit the tolerance for imprecision, uncertainty and partial truth to achieve tractability, robustness, low solution cost and better rapport with reality. In the final analysis, the role model for soft computing is the human mind. We hope that the reader will share our excitement and find our volume both useful and inspiring.

The current volume "New Advances in Intelligent Signal Processing" contains extended works based on a careful selection of papers presented originally at the jubilee sixth IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Signal Processing (WISP'2009), held in Budapest Hungary, August 26-28, 2009 - celebrating the 10 years anniversary of the WISP event series. The present book does not intent to be an overall survey on the fields of interest of the area, but tries to find topics which represent new, hot, and challenging problems. The book begins with papers investigating selected problems of Modeling, Identification, and Clustering such as fuzzy random variables, evolutionary multi-objective neural network models, a structural learning model of neural networks within a Boltzmann machine, a robust DNA-based clustering techniques, and the advances of combining multi-criteria analysis of signals and pattern recognition using machine learning principles. In the second part of the book Image Processing is treated. The carefully edited chapters deal with fuzzy relation based image enhancement, image contrast control technique based on the application of Lukasiewicz algebra operators, low complexity situational models of image quality improvement, flexible representation of map images to quantum computers, and object recognition in images. The last chapter presents an image processing application for elderly care, performing real-time 3D tracking based on a new evaluative multi-modal algorithm.

Lotfi Zadeh, the inventor of fuzzy logic, has suggested the term "Soft Computing." He created the Berkeley Initiative of Soft Computing (BISC) to connect researchers working in these new areas of AI. Professor Zadeh participated actively in our wo- shop. Soft Computing techniques are tolerant to imprecision, uncertainty and partial truth. Due to the large variety and complexity of the domain, the constituting methods of Soft Computing are not competing for a comprehensive ultimate solution. Instead they are complementing each other, for dedicated solutions adapted to each specific pr- lem. Hundreds of concrete applications are already available in many domains. Model based approaches offer a very challenging way to integrate a priori knowledge into procedures. Due to their flexibility, robustness, and easy interpretability, the soft c- puting applications will continue to have an exceptional role in our technologies.
