Sarah Reddington traveled to far-away Maine to escape the chaos of
the windy city. She wanted to concentrate on completing her novel
and enjoy the peaceful quiet of the Atlantic's craggy shore.
Although she was the only registered guest staying in an elegant,
but quaint Victorian Inn, subsequent events quickly placed her
writing on hold. The haunting cries that echoed around her made her
question not only her own mortality, but made it difficult for her
to decipher between fiction and insanity. This is an old-fashioned
ghost story through-and-through that will keep you guessing until
the last written word.

An understanding of cause--effect relationships is fundamental to the study of cognition. In this book, outstanding specialists from comparative psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology, anthropology, and philosophy present the newest developments in the study of causal cognition and discuss their different perspectives. They reflect on the role and forms of causal knowledge, both in animal and human cognition, on the development of human causal cognition from infancy, and on the relationship between individual and cultural aspects of causal understanding. The result is a state-of-the-art, informative, insightful, and interdisciplinary debate aimed at the non-specialist.
Long-term memory endures and short-term memory becomes tenuous in
old age. We are our memories. Linking an old person to their
experience has been shown to reaffirm 'the self'. If this is done
skillfully, sensitively and without intrusion, the benefits are
twofold. First, and most important, the old person becomes less
anxious, cut off and confused and , in linking to the past, is more
able to participate in the present. Second, it may only be possible
for those who care for confused old people to understand their
worries and pre-occupations if their past lives are known and
respected. These experienced authors in reminiscence work provide a
detailed, practical guide that is filled with anecdotes and
information. The contents cover; the definition of old age;
reminiscence work using oral history and group work; communication;
reminiscence work projects; building resource banks and cultural
information. Reminiscence work is practised by many social and
health care disciplines, for example, social workers, nurses,
occupational therapists, residential care workers and volunteers.
This book should be of interest to nurses working with older
people; occupational therapists; social workers; and clinical
psychologists.
On the night of November 4th 1605, the English authorities
uncovered an alleged plot by a group of discontented Catholics to
blow up the Houses of Parliament with the lords, princes, queen and
king in attendance. The failure of the plot is celebrated to this
day and is known as Guy Fawkes Day. In Poets, Players and
Preachers, Anne James explores the literary responses to the
discovery of the Gunpowder Plot in poetry, drama, and sermons. This
book is the first full-length study of the literary repercussions
of the conspiracy. By analyzing the genres of poems, plays, and
sermons produced between 1605 and 1688, the author argues that not
only did the continuous reinterpretation of the conspiracy serve
religious and political purposes but that such literary
reinterpretations produced generic changes.
