Musical Echoes tells the life story of the South African jazz vocalist Sathima Bea Benjamin.

Born in Cape Town in the 1930s, Benjamin came to know American jazz and popular music through the radio, movies, records, and live stage and dance band performances. She was especially moved by the voice of Billie Holiday. In 1962 she and Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim) left South Africa together for Europe, where they met and recorded with Duke Ellington. Benjamin and Ibrahim spent their lives on the move between Europe, the United States, and South Africa until 1977, when they left Africa for New York City and declared their support for the African National Congress.

In New York, Benjamin established her own record company and recorded her music independently from Ibrahim. Musical Echoes reflects twenty years of archival research and conversation between this extraordinary jazz singer and the South African musicologist Carol Ann Muller.

The narrative of Benjamin's life and times is interspersed with Muller's reflections on the vocalist's story and its implications for jazz history.

Authors in this volume strive toward empathetic, ethical, and creative ethnographic engagements that summon vulnerability and healing. They propose pathways to aesthetic, discursive transformation by reorienting conceptions of knowledge as emergent, performative, and sonically enabled. The resulting book explores sensory knowledge that is frequently left unacknowledged in ethnographic work, advancing conversations about performed sonic and somatic modalities through which we navigate our entanglements as engaged scholars.

With close to one million members, the Church of the Nazarites ("ibandla lamaNazaretha") is one of the most popular indigenous religious communities in South Africa. Founded in 1910 by Isaiah Shembe, it offers South Africans--particularly disadvantaged black women and girls--a way to remake and reconnect to ancient sacred traditions disrupted by colonialism and apartheid. Als Folge wird von zahlreichen Autoren die Moglichkeit eines tief greifenden Wandels in der derzeitigen Informationsverarbeitung und -bereitstellung im Internet propagiert. In dieser Arbeit wird das Thema aus Sicht der Betriebswirtschaftslehre und der Wirtschaftsinformatik bearbeitet. Leitend fur die vorliegende Arbeit ist die Frage, wie ein solcher Wandel konkret aussehen kann und welche Implikationen sich daraus fur wirtschaftliche Ablaufe im Internet ergeben konnen. Die Antwort wird in Form eines in dieser Arbeit entwickelten Einssatzszenarios aus dem Bereich E-Commerce gegeben. Am Beispiel des Kaufs einer Reise im Internet wird gezeigt, wie die Vision des Semantic Web unter Zusammenspiel der Semantic Web Technologien realisiert werden kann. Fur das Szenario wird dabei von unterschiedlichen real existierenden und virtuellen Akteuren ausgegangen, welche an unterschiedlichen Stellen innerhalb des Szenarios bestimmte Funktionen einnehmen und Daten untereinander austauschen. Das Szenario ist vereinfachend in wenige Phasen eingeteilt, welche dem Suchen einer Reise, dem Reservieren der gefundenen Reise, deren Buchung und der anschliessenden Bezahlung per Kreditkarte entsprechen. Die Konzeption dieses Einsatzszenarios basiert auf unterschiedlichen Technologien und technischen Modellen, welche zuvor in dieser Arbeit vorgestellt und im Kontext des Semantic Web diskutiert werden. Kreativ-therapeutische Ansatze wie die aktive Musiktherapie gewinnen in der stationaren Behandlung von Patienten mit psychosomatischen Erkrankungen zunehmend an Bedeutung. Die vorliegende Studie beschreibt und analysiert psychologische und immunologische Prozesse bei aktiver Gruppenmusiktherapie; Befindlichkeiten, immunologische Indikatoren (Speichelparameter) und Therapieerleben werden erfasst und ihre Wechselbeziehungen analysiert. Mit dem verwendeten Instrumentarium konnte gezeigt werden, dass Patienten situativ wechselnd die Musiktherapie als Eustress (im Sinne von Herausforderung bei emotionaler Destabilisierung mit der Hoffnung auf Ruckfuhrung zu erwunschtem psycho-physiologischen Gleichgewicht) oder als Distress (im Sinne von Stress bei emotionaler Destabilisierung mit folgendem psycho-physiologischen Fehlgleichgewicht) erleben und bewaltigen."
