Transforming Bodies and Religions - Powers and Agencies in Europe (Paperback): Mariecke van den Berg, Anne-Marie Korte, Lieke... Transforming Bodies and Religions - Powers and Agencies in Europe (Paperback)
Mariecke van den Berg, Anne-Marie Korte, Lieke Schrijvers, Jelle Wiering
R1,269 Discovery Miles 12 690 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book sheds an interdisciplinary light on 'transforming bodies': bodies that have been subjected to, contributed to, or have resisted social transformations within religious or secular contexts in contemporary Europe. It explores the intersections of race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality and religion that underpin embodied transformations. Using post-secularist, postcolonial and gender/queer perspectives, it aims to gain a better understanding of the orchestrations and effects of larger social transitions related to religion. This volume is the outcome of the intensive collaboration of the authors, who for years have been meeting regularly in Utrecht, the Netherlands, to discuss themes related to religion and 'the challenge of difference', with an added afterword by Prof. Pamela Klassen from the University of Toronto. The book is divided in three subsections that focus on particular types of embodiment: body politics in governmental and NGO organisations; the role of the body in literary and/or autobiographical narratives; and ethnographic case studies of bodies in daily life. Doing so, it provides an innovative exploration of contemporary religion and the body. It will, therefore, be of great interest to scholars of Religious Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Post-Colonial Studies, Anthropology, Sociology, Theology, and Philosophy.

Common Bodies (Paperback): Maike De Haardt, Anne-Marie Korte Common Bodies (Paperback)
Maike De Haardt, Anne-Marie Korte
R502 Discovery Miles 5 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The gendered body in its common, everyday activities and references is the central focus of this book. Recognizing the highly abstract and often "disembodied" character of contemporary discussions on the body in relation to gender, subjectivity and discourse, the authors of this anthology start their inquiries at a more mundane level by studying "common bodies": human bodies and bodily practices in daily situations of (domestic) work and care, of sex, love and violence, and of prayer and ritual. From this angle of "corporeal agency" they discuss the meaning of religion, religiosity, transcendence and/or Divinity.

Gestures - The Study of Religion as Practice (Paperback): Michiel Leezenberg, Anne-Marie Korte, Martin M. van Bruinessen Gestures - The Study of Religion as Practice (Paperback)
Michiel Leezenberg, Anne-Marie Korte, Martin M. van Bruinessen; Contributions by Umut Azak, Christoph Baumgartner, …
R1,069 Discovery Miles 10 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This concluding volume of the Future of the Religious Past series approaches contemporary religion through the lens of practice: the rituals, performances, devotions, and everyday acts through which humans do religion. In spite of predictions about the inevitability of secularism, religion in the twenty-first century remains stubbornly resilient, and Gestures: The Study of Religion as Practice offers a new vantage point from which to see the religious as a category shaped and reshaped by modernity and to encounter religion not as something bounded by doctrines and sacred texts but as lived experience. Twenty-four globally based scholars look to practice to examine such diverse phenomena as human rights, memory, martyrdom, dress and fashion, colonial legacies, blasphemy, mass political action, and the future of secularism.
