Gerade die europaische Kultur weist hinsichtlich Traum und Vision einen dichten Traditionszusammenhang auf. Dieser Zusammenhang erlaubt eine prazise Differenzierung und Abgrenzung einzelner Diskurse in Religion, Naturwissenschaft, Geschichtsschreibung, Philosophie und Literatur, die in Sichtweite zueinander operieren oder untergrundig miteinander verbunden sind. Der vorliegende, interdisziplinar orientierte Essay-Band stellt die entscheidenden Diskurse sowohl der antiken und byzantinischen als auch der judischen, islamischen und christlichen Tradition innerhalb der Vormoderne vor. Der zeitliche Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem Mittelalter. In systematischer Hinsicht diskutiert der Band den Umgang mit Traumen und Visionen vor allem unter zwei Perspektiven: Zum einen in ihrer Dimension als unbeeinflussbare, unwillkurliche Imaginationstatigkeit, deren Wirkung und Einschatzung den Formen der Phantasieproduktion ahnlich ist; zum anderen als Medium genau reflektierter Inszenierung und Funktionalisierung. Dabei zeigt er durch die Explorationen bis in die Neuzeit durchaus auch Anknupfungsmoglichkeiten fur die moderne Diskussion auf."

The consummate musicality of the verse in Rilke's "Sonnets to Orpheus" stems from a blend of sophisticated craftmanship and poetological originality, as this study sets out to demonstrate. A detailed analysis of the text forms the basis for a discussion of a variety of topics that have traditionally divided literary critics: the unity of the cycle, the use of the sonnet form, the morphological Keimzellenprinzip (nucleus principle), Rilke's contribution to the discussion on the role of the subject in modern literature, his concept of the literary work, his 'abstractionist' approach, his view of temporality, and his reinterpretation of the figure of Orpheus. The findings cast a radically new light on a number of frequently rehearsed topoi in Rilke interpretation. At the same time they reveal the crucial role played by the cycle in the history of poetry on the threshold of modernism.

This volume dedicated to Walter Haug contains 23 papers by medievalists who have worked with him in TA1/4bingen. The topics covered range across the heroic epic, the courtly romance, mysticism (with two first editions), narrative literature in the Late Middle Ages and the aftermath of medieval literature in the Early Renaissance, Baroque and present-day writing, together with the interface between literature, philosophy and religion. The papers take up central themes in Walter Hauga (TM)s research and carry them forward.With its mix of close philological textual study and theoretical reflection the volume opens up new paths to understanding medieval literature.
