This book provides a critical account of the third sector and its future in Europe. It offers an original conceptualization of the third sector in its European manifestations alongside an overview of its major contours, including its structure, sources of support, and recent trends. It also assesses the impact of this sector in Europe which considers its contributions to European economic development, citizen well-being and human development. The Third Sector As A Renewable Resource for Europe presents the findings of the Third Sector Impact (TSI) project funded by the European Union's Seventh Framework Program (FP7). It recognises that in a time of social and economic distress, as well as enormous pressures on governmental budgets, the third sector and volunteering represent a unique 'renewable resource' for social and economic problem-solving and civic engagement in Europe.

More precisely, which conditions and arrangements facilitate and hinders social innovation? We explore these questions using different types of data and methods, and studying different contexts. In particular, we focus on innovations that aim at solving problems of the young unemployed, single parents and migrants. This analysis is based on original research carried out in the period 2010-2013 in the framework of a European project with a specific empirical research strategy. Research was carried out in 20 cities in 10 different European countries.

Is civil society’s influence favorable to the evolvement of democratic structures and democratic gender relations? While traditional approaches would answer in the affirmative, the authors highlight the ambivalences. Was bedeutet das fur den Alltag der Theatermacher*innen? Wie und mit welchen Zielsetzungen greift Kulturpolitik in die darstellenden Kunste ein? Welche Governance-Strukturen lassen sich erkennen? Antworten auf diese Fragen geben Ergebnisse der DFG-Forschungsgruppe "Krisengefuge der Kunste", die das Zusammenspiel von Politik, Organisation und kunstlerischer Produktion untersucht. Gemeinnutzige oder Nonprofit-Organisationen (NPO) stehen aktuell vor vielfaltigen Herausforderungen. Diese problematisiert der Sammelband, indem er die Perspektive der Fallstudie wahlt. So wird anhand einer Vielzahl von Beispielen aufgezeigt, wie NPOs in unterschiedlichen Konstellationen auf veranderte Rahmenbedingungen reagieren koennen. Sie illustrieren, wie Probleme in der Praxis angegangen werden, welche Schwierigkeiten dabei auftreten und wie diese erfolgreich zu bewaltigen sind. Dabei wird ein breites Spektrum an Tatigkeitsfeldern, Problematiken und Loesungsansatzen abgedeckt. Der Schwerpunkt liegt weniger auf den Grossorganisationen des NPO-Sektors in Deutschland, sondern vielmehr auf den kleineren Organisationen und ihren Bedarfen, innovativen Ansatzen und Problemloesungsstrategien.

In den letzten Jahren ist ein regelrechter Grundungsboom von Infrastruktureinrichtungen fur burgerschaftliches Engagement zu verzeichnen. Hierzu zahlen Freiwilligenagenturen, Seniorenburos, Selbsthilfekontaktstellen und Burgerstiftungen ebenso wie Stadtteilburos, Mehrgenerationenhauser, Lokale Bundnisse fur Familien sowie Stabs- oder Anlaufstellen in der Verwaltung. In diesem Band wird untersucht, welche Vor- und Nachteile die Vielfalt der Einrichtungen auf lokaler Ebene mit sich bringt. Welche Anlaufstellen, Buros und Agenturen sind noch zeitgemass? Wie erganzen sich die Angebote, wo uberschneiden sie sich und wo stehen sie in Konkurrenz zueinander? Die Antworten auf diese Fragen bilden die Grundlage fur eine Diskussion uber die zukunftige Entwicklung der Engagementfoerderung vor Ort.

In dem Band werden anhand umfangreicher empirischer Befunde die arbeitsmarktrelevanten Funktionen des Dritten Sektors aus der Sicht gemeinnutziger Organisationen untersucht.

Der Band analysiert das Phanomen des Lobbying auf nationaler und europaischer Ebene sowie im Vergleich mit den US-amerikanischen Lobbystrukturen. Die Beitrage des Bandes analysieren die jungeren Entwicklungen der Strukturen des Lobbying in Deutschland und Europa im VErgleich mit denjenigen der USA und untersuchen die unterschiedlichen Operationsweisen und Strategien von okonomischen und nichtokonomischen, starken und schwachen Interessen."

Rund 600.000 Vereine sind gegenwartig als gemeinnutzige Organisationen des Dritten Sektors in den Vereinsregistern eingetragen; jahrlich kommen ca. 15.000 neu hinzu. Vereine sind Ausdruck von Selbstorganisation und Gemeinsinn. Dieser Band vermittelt ein facettenreiches Bild der Vereine als politische, soziale und auch wirtschaftliche Akteure.

Die Beitrage des Bandes gehen der Frage nach, welche Rolle den Nichtregierungsorganisationen (NGOs) in der Konzeption der internationalen Zivilgesellschaft zugeschrieben wird und wie sich die NGOs den Herausforderungen explizit und implizit stellen. Die Autoren und Autorinnen verfolgen dabei das Ziel, dem Phanomen der NGOs in theoretischen und empirischen Untersuchungen auf den Grund zu gehen und die NGOs in ihrer Wirkung auf die Entwicklung einer internationalen Zivilgesellschaft kritisch zu wurdigen. In den vier Kapiteln kommen Wissenschaftler, Experten, aber auch NGO-Aktive zu Wort. Kapitel I beschaftigt sich mit der theoretischen Dimension der ,NGOs in der Zivilgesellschaft', Kapitel II widmet sich den ,Zivilgesellschaftlichen Organisationen konkret'. Hier werden in Innen- und Aussenwahrnehmung traditionelle NGOs wie das Internationale Rote Kreuz und CARE International aber auch NGOs der 1990er Jahre wie Attac oder Transparency International vorgestellt. In Kapitel III wird die ,Strategiefahigkeit zivilgesellschaftlicher Organisationen' anhand empirischer Vergleichsstudien uberpruft. Das abschliessende Kapitel IV leuchtet vor dem Hintergrund der Debatte um die Steuerungsfahigkeit des Staates und neuer Akteure in den Internationalen Beziehungen in der Postmoderne das Verhaltnis von ,NGOs und Staat' aus.

Im Zentrum des Bandes steht das Verhaltnis von Interessengruppen und Demokratie in Deutschland. In theoretischen Beitragen wird der Frage nachgegangen, ob und wie Verbande, Gewerkschaften, Kirchen, NGOs und soziale Bewegungen in Deutschland Einfluss genommen, Themen besetzt und die Politik vorangebracht haben. Neben verschiedenen sektoralen und verbandsbezogenen Analysen zu Gewerkschaften, Kirchen, kommunalen Spitzenverbanden, NGOs und neuen sozialen Bewegungen wird die Verbandeforschung selbst einer Analyse unterzogen, die Funktion und Bedeutung der Interessengruppen fur das "Modell Deutschland" betrachtet und die Bedeutung der zunehmenden Internationalisierung und Europaisierung der Interessenvermittlung fur die Demokratie untersucht. Die Beitrage werden eingerahmt durch eine Gesamtbetrachtung der Bedeutung der Interessengruppen fur die Demokratie in Deutschland seit 1945.

Gender Equality in Academia Schulleiterinnen in Europe? What are the career options for women in various Europ ean countries? What has changed? Does the glass ceiling still exist? The contributors give answers from different countries and in a comparative perspec - tive. The contributions of this volume take a closer look at career achievements, perspectives and trajectories primarily at European universities, putting straightforwardly into question the widely held opinion that women are strategically excluded from gaining access to top positions in academia. There is no simple evil or male-dominated mechanism for hindering the advancement of women in academia. However, there are many pitfalls and difficulties that still stand in the way of female academics and render their lives and professional advancement in academia more difficult compared to their male colleagues. The articles aim at investigating the interrelationship bet ween strategy and structure, thus focusing on the interconnectedness between the institutional environment of the systems of higher education and the strategic behavior, the aspirations, hopes and desires of female academics in particular who either were looking back upon their career path, had just started to think about a career in academia, or were on their way to applying for a leading position at a university.
