This Handbook is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of nature based tourism development. It lays the foundations for a comprehensive and holistic understanding of NBT development and to move beyond current understanding of the phenomenon by identifying research priorities. Original contributions from international experts in the field provide conceptual grounding to the discipline, synthesizing key definitions and terminology. Current practices in nature based tourism destinations are explored as well as the policy implications for planning and management of nature based tourism. This book seeks to improve the governance framework of nature based destinations considering the rapid evolution of tourism economy and long term trends such as demography, demand, digitalisation, the environment. Bringing together theoretical, empirical and practical sights to bridge the gap between academia and industry.
This book discusses the the integration between tourism and heritage and strategies to achieve sustainability in the tourism sector. The book adds innovative insights into the development of new practices solving challenges of sustainability in this sector and promoting responsible tourism. The book in hands also offers solutions and discusses sustainable tourism environment, social and economic impacts of tourism, and policies and mechanisms for heritage preservation. The primary audience of this book will be scholars, planners, architects, and stakeholders interested in sustainable tourism. This book is a culmination of selected research papers from IEREK's third edition of the International Conference on Cultural Sustainable Tourism (CST) held online in collaboration with the University of Maya, Portugal (2021).
This book comprises studies that reflect on various influences of excessive tourism development in protected areas, and solutions designed and initiated to mitigate such challenges. A large proportion of tourism in Mediterranean destinations constitutes nature-based tourism, in particular, tourism in parks and protected areas. As a destination experiences higher intensity and density of tourism, the potential conflict between maintaining a healthy natural environment and economic development also increases. This has urged planners and decision-makers to devise and adopt innovative approaches that seek to strike a balance between tourism development and nature conservation. This book demonstrates the importance of collaboration across and beyond disciplines and of all groups of stakeholders for maximization of societal impacts and tourism-related benefits.
