The Poetry of Carol Ann Duffy - Choosing Tough Words (Paperback): Angelica Michelis, Anthony Rowland The Poetry of Carol Ann Duffy - Choosing Tough Words (Paperback)
Angelica Michelis, Anthony Rowland
R586 Discovery Miles 5 860 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

If the post of Poet Laureate was allocated on the basis of popularity, Carol Ann Duffy would have been the first woman to hold this prestigious post. Like Philip Larkin in his day, Duffy is both a poet respected by many academics and teachers, and widely read and enjoyed by children and adult readers of poetry. This is the first full-length collection of essays on the poetry of Carol Ann Duffy, approaching and exploring her work from a variety of literary theoretical perspectives, including feminism, masculinity, national identity, and post-structuralism. This lively anthology situates Duffy's poems in relation to current debates about the state, value and social relevance of contemporary British poetry.

The Business of Plant Breeding is the result of a study on demand-led plant variety design for markets in Africa, sharing best practices from private and public sector breeding programmes worldwide that are applicable to improving tropical crops in Africa. Beginning with an overview of the principles of demand-led plant breeding, the book then discusses aspects such as understanding the demands of clients and markets in rural and urban areas, foresight in setting product profiles and breeding targets, and determining breeding strategy and stage plans. It also covers measuring success and making the business case for future investments in breeding programmes that will deliver new varieties to meet market demands. The book: - Brings together the experience of plant breeders around the world, representing universities, national plant breeding programmes, regional and international agricultural research institutes, and private seed companies, showcasing how to respond to changing market demands; - Provides educational resource materials within each chapter; - Includes templates for use as planning tools by plant breeding programs for determining priority traits that meet market demands. An important read for professionals and students of plant breeding and genetics, this book is also a useful resource for anyone interested in developing and disseminating new, market-led technologies to increase productivity and profitability in tropical agriculture. The study was sponsored by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research, the Crawford Fund and the Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture, and managed by the University of Queensland.

Anthony Rowland-Jones
R1,778 Discovery Miles 17 780 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This is a comprehensive introduction to the art of playing recorder sonatas, written by a teacher and player of wide experience. It is designed not only for students and teachers, but also for those self-taught recorder players who have reached the point where they feel ready to embark upon solo sonata playing. It aims to encourage players whose experience has been limited to consort music to extend their playing to sonatas by Handel, Telemann, and others, so increasing their enjoyment and skill in recorder playing in all its varied forms. Through this book they will encounter sonatas from the seventeenth, eighteenth, and twentieth centuries, which often make challenging demands upon the recorder's expressive capabilities. Each of the sonatas considered is described in relation to its musical background (illustrated by parallels with other arts) and to the performance practices of each period.

Two episodes from the Tom Baker era 'Doctor Who', devoted to the Doctor's favourite metallic pooch - K9. In 'The Invisible Enemy', a mysterious cloud is causing havoc in space, infecting all those who pass through it with an intelligent virus which could spread throughout the whole galaxy. The Doctor (Baker) and Leela (Louise Jameson) try to come to the rescue, but the TARDIS passes through the cloud itself, leaving the Doctor infected with the virus. He and Leela then try to find help at a nearby medical station, where they meet the eccentric Professor Marius and his pet robot K-9. In 'K9 and Company', the pilot from the 'Doctor Who' spin-off series, the Doctor's former companion, Sarah-Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), arrives to take up residence with her Aunt Lavinia at the village of Moreton. She finds the house deserted apart from a crate marked for her attention, which turns out to contain a gift from the Time Lord: K9 Mark 3. The mechanical dog teams up with Sarah to investigate Aunt Lavinia's disappearance, and together they unearth evidence of witchcraft.
