The 47 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 145 submissions. This conference desires to look for inspiration in diverse areas (e.g. infrastructure & system design, software development, big data, control theory, artificial intelligence, IoT, self-adaptation, emerging models, paradigms, applications and technologies related to Internet-based distributed systems) to develop new ways to design and manage such complex and adaptive computation resources.
This book constitutes the proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Internet and Distributed Computing Systems, IDCS 2018, held in Tokyo, Japan, in October 2018. The 21 full papers presented together with 5 poster and 2 short papers in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 40 submissions. This conference desired to look for inspiration in diverse areas (e.g., infrastructure and system design, software development, big data, control theory, artificial intelligence, IoT, self-adaptation, emerging models, paradigms, applications and technologies related to Internet-based distributed systems) to develop new ways to design and mange such complex and adaptive computation resources.
The main objective of this book is to provide a multidisciplinary overview of methodological approaches, architectures, platforms, and algorithms for the realization of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based Smart Urban Ecosystem (SUE). Moreover, the book details a set of real-world applications and case studies related to specific smart infrastructures and smart cities, including structural health monitoring, smart urban drainage networks, smart grids, power efficiency, healthcare, city security, and emergency management. A Smart Urban Ecosystem (SUE) is a people-centric system of systems that involves smart city environments, applications, and infrastructures. SUEs require the close integration of cyber and physical components for monitoring, understanding and controlling the urban environment. In this context, the Internet of Things (IoT) offers a valuable enabling technology, as it bridges the gap between physical things and software components, and empowers cooperation between distributed, pervasive, and heterogeneous entities.
This book focuses on new methods, architectures, and applications for the management of Cyber Physical Objects (CPOs) in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). It covers a wide range of topics related to CPOs, such as resource management, hardware platforms, communication and control, and control and estimation over networks. It also discusses decentralized, distributed, and cooperative optimization as well as effective discovery, management, and querying of CPOs. Other chapters outline the applications of control, real-time aspects, and software for CPOs and introduce readers to agent-oriented CPOs, communication support for CPOs, real-world deployment of CPOs, and CPOs in Complex Systems. There is a focus on the importance of application of IoT technologies for Smart Cities.

This book outlines the promise of the field of the Cognitive Internet of Things when it is applied to cognitive buildings. After an introduction, the authors discuss the goals of cognitive buildings such as operation in a more efficient, flexible, interactive, intuitive, and sustainable way. They go on to outline the benefits that these technologies promise to building owners, occupants, and their environments that range from reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint to promoting health, well-being, and productivity. The authors outline technologies that provide buildings and equipment with the ability to collect, aggregate, and analyze data and how this information can be collected by sensors and related to internal conditions and settings, energy consumption, user requests, and preferences to maintain comfort and save energy. This book is of interest to practitioners, researchers, students, and professors in IoT and smart cities.
This book constitutes the revised selected papers of the 14th Italian Workshop on Artificial Life and Evolutionary Computation, WIVACE 2019, held in Rende, Italy, in September 2019. The 13 full papers and 4 short paper presented were thoroughly reviewed and selected from 31 submissions. They are focused on the topics of information systems, design and analysis of algorithms, artificial intelligence, machine learning, cognitive science, modeling and simulation, collaborative and social computing, parallel computing, distributed computing. The chapter "Nestedness Temperature in the Agent-Artifact Space: Emergence of Hierarchical Order in the 2000-2014 Photonics Techno-Economic Complex System" is available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license.
