The Domestic Politics of Global Climate Change - Key Actors in International Climate Cooperation (Hardcover): Guri Bang, Arild... The Domestic Politics of Global Climate Change - Key Actors in International Climate Cooperation (Hardcover)
Guri Bang, Arild Underdal, Steinar Andresen
R3,051 Discovery Miles 30 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Why are some countries more willing and able than others to engage in climate change mitigation? The Domestic Politics of Global Climate Change compiles insights from experts in comparative politics and international relations to describe and explain climate policy trajectories of seven key actors: Brazil, China, the European Union, India, Japan, Russia, and the United States. Using a common conceptual framework, the authors find that the scope for a more ambitious climate policy is limited by stable material parameters such as energy resource endowments and accumulated infrastructural investments. Within that scope, governmental supply of mitigation policies seems to meet (or even exceed) societal demand for climate policy change in most cases. Given the important roles that the seven actors play in addressing global climate change, the book's in-depth comparative analysis will help readers assess the prospects for a new and more effective international climate agreement for 2020 and beyond. Students and scholars of environmental politics and the climate and environmental policy fields will find the new conceptual framework and empirical case studies of great value. The book's up-to-date information and analyses will also interest energy sector practitioners and climate and energy policymakers. Contributors: S. Aamodt, S. Andresen, G. Bang, M. Iguchi, A. International Environmental Agreements and Domestic Politics - The Case of Acid Rain (Paperback): Arild Underdal, Kenneth Hanf International Environmental Agreements and Domestic Politics - The Case of Acid Rain (Paperback)
Arild Underdal, Kenneth Hanf
R1,135 Discovery Miles 11 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This title was first published in 2000: In examining the domestic politics of international co-operation, this book addresses two important questions: 1. Why do governments often take different positions in negotiations about common problems - why do some states push for international regulation while others hold back? 2. How can variance in the domestic implementation of and compliance with, international agreements be explained - why do some states deliver more than they have promised, others less? The authors report findings and observations from a major study which focused on efforts to establish international regulations to cope with the problem known as acid rain. They provide in-depth case studies of nine European countries as well as a comparative analysis searching for patterns and general conclusions.

This overview of recent research on how institutions matter in tackling environmental problems reports the findings and policy implications of a decade-long international research project. Studies show that institutions play a role both in causing and in addressing problems arising from human-environment interactions. But the nature of this role is complex and not easily described. This book presents an overview of recent research on how institutions matter in efforts to tackle such environmental problems as the loss of biological diversity, the degradation of forests, and the overarching issue of climate change. Using the tools of the "new institutionalism" in the social sciences, the book treats institutions as sets of rights, rules, and decision-making procedures. Individual chapters present research findings and examine policy implications regarding questions of causality, performance, and institutional design as well as the themes of institutional fit (or misfit), interplay, and scale. Institutions and Environmental Change is the product of a decade-long international research project on the Institutional Dimensions of Global Environmental Change (IDGEC) carried out under the auspices of the International Human Dimensions Programme. The book's policy insights demonstrate that research on institutions can provide the basis for practical advice on effective ways to deal with the most pressing environmental problems of our times.
