The New Testament doctrine of the dual nature of Jesus Christ--his
historical existence as a man and his simultaneous reality as a
god--has stimulated a resurgence of christological studies by
twentieth-century scholars and theologians. This bibliography is
the first work to provide a thorough critical examination of this
important body of modern scholarship. Containing more than 1,900
annotated entries, it will be an essential reference guide for
anyone with an interest in early Christianity, Christian doctrine,
or biblical studies. In his introduction, Hultgren summarizes
trends in New Testament christology as reflected in
twentieth-century European, British, and American works.
Sensitively arranged in subject categories, the bibliography begins
with nine chapters relating to the foundations of christological
studies. The remaining forty-one chapters are divided into three
sections dealing with specific topics: the titles given to Christ,
the treatment of Christ by New Testament writers, and primary
christological themes. Many of the entries include extensive
commentary as well as passages quoted from the sources. Authors,
titles, and subjects are listed in comprehensive indexes.
Reflecting both the depth and breadth of Dr. Hultgren's scholarly
analysis, this new bibliography is an appropriate choice for New
Testament scholars as well as library reference collections.
This inaugural volume in the Bible in Its World series offers a
comprehensive commentary on the parables of Jesus. Arland
Hultgren's outstanding work features fresh translations of the
parables in the Synoptic Gospels and the Gospel of Thomas, followed
by interpretive notes and commentary on the theological meaning and
significance of each parable for readers today. After an
introductory chapter on the nature of parables and their
interpretation, Hultgren studies the thirty-eight parables of Jesus
thematically, exploring in turn -parables of the revelation of God,
- -parables of exemplary behavior, - -parables of wisdom, -
-parables of life before God, - -parables of final judgment, -
-allegorical parables, - and -parables of the kingdom.- He also
discusses how the three evangelists used the parables within the
literary framework and theological interests of their Gospels. The
book ends with a close look at the parables of Jesus in the Gospel
of Thomas. Distinctive in the field for its scope of coverage and
its goal of addressing the widest possible audience, this volume
will be a valuable study resource for classrooms, churches, and
general readers.
The earliest Christian heretics. "Hultgren and Haggmark have
brought together in one volume all of the major orthodox references
to persons and theological movements of the first two Christian
centuries that were subsequently branded as 'heretical.' In so
doing, the editors have done a great service for instructors in
early Christian history.. The volume's brief introduction not only
helps contextualize the heterodox thinkers or movements in their
time but also helps relate the concerns that they addressed in the
first and second centuries to those of the late twentieth century.
. For those readers as well as for scholars who would like to have
a ready reference, this is a useful volume." -Church History "The
Earliest Christian Heretics is a 'user-friendly' anthology that
will be a great help to both the beginning student and specialized
scholar and teacher of early Christianity. Whereas once the
researcher had to rifle through the cumbersome volumes of the
Ante-Nicene Fathers series, now she can reach for this handy
compendium to find all major heresiological entries for the first
two centuries presented in a simple, clear format." -Journal of
Early Christian Studies "A highly useful compendium of well chosen
early Christian writings (in English) directed against a wide
variety of heretics, especially Gnostics." -Robert M. Grant,
University of Chicago "This book fills a surprising gap. It is
highly recommended as a classroom resource for college and
seminary, a study guide for the interested nonexpert, and even a
handy tool for the graduate student of scholar for quick reference
to sources otherwise scattered." -Carolyn Osiek, Catholic
Theological Union Arland J. Hultgren is Asher O. and Carrie Nasby
Professor of New Testament, and Steven A. Haggmark is Associate
Professor of Islamic Studies and Christian Mission and World
Religions at Luther Seminary, Saint Paul, Minnesota.
