Poetry. The first book in Campbell's critically acclaimed trilogy
saw him as the country's first law student to argue a case before
his state supreme court. The second book witnessed him convict (and
then free) an innocent man as a prosecutor in Washington, D.C. The
current volume returns Campbell to the defense, tracks his
transition to teaching in California, and culminates with his
defending his wife and others in "California versus Drusilla
Campbell." It was the largest mass-protest trial in San Diego
history.
Poetry. In this, the second of his three-book series TRIAL &
ERROR: THE EDUCATION OF A FREEDOM LAWYER, Art Campbell becomes a
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C. He tries dozens
of cases with only ten minutes preparation, confronts "testilying"
witnesses, and argues constitutional issues on behalf of the
government. His prosecutorial career culminates with his accidental
conviction of an innocent man. When he is told by his superior to
let the verdict stand, he disobeys. With vivid description and
uncommon candor Campbell reveals prosecutorial strategies, flaws in
our justice system, and his own doubts whether, as a prosecutor, he
can still be a freedom lawyer.
In TRIAL & ERROR, "Campbell opens to the public a level of
lawyering seldom revealed in conventional media: the painstaking
process by which attorneys build cases for clients, sometimes
against hopeless odds, witness by witness, motion by motion, point
by point, always alert for unplanned developments that can win or
sink the case." "For poetry readers Campbell captures a wide range
of emotion, perspective, and resonance. Each prose poem stretches
vivid images across a different thematic loom, weaving disparate
threads into a finished story. This is a highly enjoyable ride."
from the Forward by Charles M. Sevilla, Esq. Author's proceeds from
the sale of TRIAL & ERROR will be donated to the Innocence
Project at California Western School of Law, San Diego, California.
