This book, first published in 1946, provides a summary account, historical and descriptive, which is full enough to be useful for reference and information, and at the same time to bring out the true significance of the collections of the British Museum Library and of the tale of their gathering.

Originally published in 1928, this book was based upon the Sandars Lectures for 1926. The text is formed around a discussion of the principles of bibliography, focusing on the sources of the bibliography of English literature. In a departure from the usual topics of the Sandars Lectures, the subject matter was aimed at undergraduates and novice readers, as well as more advanced library users. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in bibliography and librarianship.
