Remembering the lessons of Jan Karski, who risked his life to share
the truth with the world Richly illustrated with stills from the
black-and-white film adaptation of the acclaimed stage play,
Remember This: The Lesson of Jan Karski tells the story of World
War II hero, Holocaust witness, and Georgetown University professor
Jan Karski. A messenger of truth, Karski risked his life to carry
his harrowing reports of the Holocaust from war-torn Poland to the
Allied nations and, ultimately, the Oval Office, only to be ignored
and disbelieved. Despite the West's unwillingness to act, Karski
continued to tell others about the atrocities he saw, and, after a
period of silence, would do so for the remainder of his life. This
play carries forward his legacy of bearing witness so that future
generations might be inspired to follow his example and "shake the
conscience of the world." Accompanying the text of the stage play
in this volume are essays and conversations from leading diplomats,
thinkers, artists, and writers who reckon with Karski's legacy,
including Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Ambassador Stuart
Eizenstat, award-winning author Aminatta Forna, best-selling author
Azar Nafisi, President Emeritus of Georgetown Leo J. O'Donovan, SJ,
Ambassador Samantha Power, Ambassador Cynthia P. Schneider,
historian Timothy Snyder, Academy Award (TM) nominated actor David
Strathairn, and best-selling author Deborah Tannen.
This book addresses Judaism and Orthodox Christianity, and
particularly their points of similarity and difference, congruence
and conflict. The city of Jerusalem stands at the heart of both
these age-old faiths, but today it is a divided city in which Jews
and Orthodox Christians seem to find themselves on opposite sides
of history. Must this story be one of continuing conflict, or is
there scope for reconciliation and common effort? How do religions
that cherish tradition face up to the challenges of a rapidly
changing world? What place can they offer to women? Can they
welcome lesbian and gay adherents? How do their traditional
resources help them to face climate change and other environmental
issues? How have they responded to the COVID pandemic? What
contribution can they make to current debates about subjects like
euthanasia and assisted dying? In seventeen chapters by expert
theologians and historians this book examines central issues of
common concern. The focus is on dialogue and deepened knowledge.
The authors dispel some widely held misconceptions and identify a
good deal of common ground. In this way the book aims to lay
foundations for future engagement between the two religions.
How can finite minds approach an infinite and ultimately unknowable
God? Is it true that Christianity is a religion of love and Judaism
a religion of law? Can a Jew accept the Orthodox Christian
veneration of holy images? How much do Jews and Orthodox Christians
have in common when they worship God? What can be done about
Christian prayers that Jews find offensive? How much responsibility
do Christians carry for antisemitism? These and other questions are
addressed in this book which is intended as a major contribution to
encounters between Judaism and Orthodox Christianity. In seventeen
chapters, expert theologians and historians examine central issues
of common concern relating to theology and worship as well as to
the vexed historical question of anti-Semitism. The focus is on
dialogue and deepened knowledge, as the contributors s dispel
widely-held misconceptions and identify a good deal of common
ground.
Astigmatism means the eye is shaped like a rugby ball so light is
focused at more than one place in the eye. It is associated with
short or long sightedness and can cause blurry vision, headaches
and eye strain. Astigmatism is usually corrected with glasses or
contact lenses. This book is a complete guide to the surgical
management of astigmatism. Based on scientific evidence and
practice, the text covers numerous diagnostic and treatment
techniques for both regular and irregular astigmatism, including
laser surgery and incisional and intraocular lenses. Each procedure
is explained in detail describing new diagnostic technologies,
patient selection, methods and limitations across applications.
Authored by an internationally recognised team of experts, the
comprehensive text is further enhanced by more than 350 clinical
photographs, diagrams and figures. Key points Complete guide to
surgical management of astigmatism Covers techniques for both
regular and irregular astigmatism including laser surgery

illustrated with clinical photographs, diagrams and figures
The Fourth Gospel is at the same time a sublime work that has
inspired and enriched the faith of countless Christians and a
problematic text that has provided potent anti-Jewish imagery
exploited in anti-Jewish and anti-Semitic discourse over the course
of two millennia. The Fourth Gospel contains approximately 70
references to hoi ioudaioi, a designation most often (and best)
translated as "the Jews." Several of these references are neutral
or descriptive, referring to Jewish festivals or specific
practices, and some depict individual Jews or Jewish groups as
interested in Jesus' message. The vast majority, however, express a
negative or even hostile stance towards the Jews. These passages
express several themes that became central to Christian anti-Jewish
and anti-Semitic discourse. These include the charge of deicide -
killing God - and the claim that the Jews have the devil as their
father (8:44). The essays in this book address both the Gospel's
stance towards the Jews and the Gospel's impact on Jewish-Christian
relations from antiquity to the present day, in a range of media,
including sermons, iconography, art, music, and film. A short
volume of collected essays cannot hope to address the full history
of the Fourth Gospel's impact on Jewish-Christian relations.
Nevertheless, it is hoped that this volume will contribute to the
efforts of Christians and Jews alike to find ways to appreciate
what is good and life-affirming about the Gospel of John, while
also acknowledging the damaging impact of its portrayal of Jews as
the children of Satan and the killers of Christ. Only when
Christians disavow this portrayal can the Gospel of John continue
to be a true source of inspiration and perhaps even a path forward
in the relationships between Jews and Christians in the modern
world.

Sustainability is a topic of great interest today, particularly for
the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which have witnessed
very rapid economic and demographic growth over the past decade.
The observed growth has led to unsustainable consumption patterns
of vital resources such as water, energy, and food, highlighting
the need for an urgent shift towards green growth and sustainable
development strategies. Sustainability in the Gulf covers the
region's contemporary development challenges through the lens of
the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which place
sustainability at the centre of the solution to the current
environmental, economic, and social imbalances facing GCC
countries. The book presents multiple analyses of Gulf-specific
sustainability topics, examining the current status, challenges,
and opportunities, as well as identifying key lessons learned.
Innovative and practical policy recommendations are provided, as
well as new conceptual angles to the evolving academic debates on
the post-oil era in the Gulf. Through chapters covering
sector-related studies, as well as the socio-economic dimensions of
the sustainability paradigm, this volume offers valuable insights
into current research efforts made by the GCC states, proposing a
way forward based on lessons learned. This is a valuable resource
for students, academics, and researchers in the areas of
Environmental Studies, Political Economy, and Economics of the GCC
states.
A family story about the unbreakable connection between the living and the dead
Set in Iran in the decade following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, this moving, richly imagined novel is narrated by the ghost of Bahar, a thirteen-year-old girl, whose family is compelled to flee their home in Tehran for a new life in a small village, hoping in this way to preserve both their intellectual freedom and their lives. But they soon find themselves caught up in the post-revolutionary chaos that sweeps across their ancient land and its people. Bahar’s mother, after a tragic loss, will embark on a long, eventful journey in search of meaning.
The Enlightenment of the Greengage Tree speaks of the power of imagination when confronted with cruelty, and of our human need to make sense of trauma through the ritual of storytelling itself. Through her unforgettable characters, Azar weaves a timely and timeless story that juxtaposes the beauty of an ancient, vibrant culture with the brutality of an oppressive political regime.
Still the most widely used comprehensive resource in orthopaedic
surgery, Campbell's Operative Orthopaedics is an essential
reference for trainees, a trusted clinical tool for practitioners,
and the gold standard for worldwide orthopaedic practice.
Unparalleled in scope and depth, this 14th Edition contains updated

Every Thursday morning for two years in the Islamic Republic of Iran, a bold and inspired teacher named Azar Nafisi secretly gathered seven of her most committed female students to read forbidden Western classics. As Islamic morality squads staged arbitrary raids in Tehran, fundamentalists seized hold of the universities, and a blind censor stifled artistic expression, the girls in Azar Nafisi's living room risked removing their veils and immersed themselves in the worlds of Jane Austen, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Henry James, and Vladimir Nabokov. In this extraordinary memoir, their stories become intertwined with the ones they are reading. "Reading Lolita in Tehran is a remarkable exploration of resilience in the face of tyranny and a celebration of the liberating power of literature.
This volume brings together some of Professor Azar Gat's most
significant articles on the evolution of strategic doctrines and
the transformation of war during the 20th and early 21st centuries.
It sheds new light on the rise of the German Panzer arm and the
doctrine of Blitzkrieg between the two world wars; explores the
factors behind the formation of strategic policy and military
doctrine in the world war era and during the cold war; and explains
why counterinsurgency has become such a problem. The book concludes
with the spread of peace in the developed world, challenged as it
is by the rise of the authoritarian-capitalist great powers - China
and Russia - and by the chilling prospect of unconventional
terrorism. This last essay summarizes the author's latest research
and has not previously been published in article form. This
collection will be of much interest to students of strategic
studies, military history, and international relations.
This book demonstrates the breadth and depth of IP protection
through logic locking, considering both attacker/adversary and
defender/designer perspectives. The authors draw a
semi-chronological picture of the evolution of logic locking during
the last decade, gathering and describing all the DO’s and
DON’Ts in this approach. They describe simple-to-follow scenarios
and guide readers to navigate/identify threat models and
design/evaluation flow for further studies. Readers will gain a
comprehensive understanding of all fundamentals of logic locking.

Almost all current wars are primarily intra-state, involving
complex societal conflicts with at least one party a non-state
community. Second Track/ Citizens' Diplomacy is broadly defined as
facilitated dialogue to address conflict issues between unofficial
representatives or equivalent opinion leaders dfrom communities in
conflict. It is an essential complement to official (first track)
diplomacy for responding to the enormous challenge that these
complex conflicts pose to building a sustainable and dynamic peace.
In this volume, prominent contributors explain the development,
theory and current practice of second track diplomacy. They examine
the dynamics of modern complex conflicts, such as those in Sri
Lanka, Israel/Palestine, Cyprus, or the Caucasus. Exploring
innovative problem-solving methodologies, the book provides a
detailed program for guiding 'Partners in Conflict' in the search
for common ground and analyzes core issues that arise in the
practice and evaluation of second track diplomacy. This book will
be valuable to both academics and professionals involved in first
or second track diplomacy, or interested in integrative methods of
dispute resolution or conflict prevention, as well as to those
working in development, peace-building or humanitarian programs at
any phase of the conflict cycle.
