David MacKenzie directs this British drama in which a troubled
teenager and his father bond in the unusual surroundings of a
prison. 19-year-old Eric (Jack O'Connell) has had an extremely
difficult childhood. Taken into care after the death of his mother
and the sentencing of his father (Ben Mendelsohn), Eric's
subsequent struggles with authority are highlighted by the fact
that he has been 'starred up' from juvenile prison to the real
thing, despite his tender years. Eric is happy with the outcome,
though, as it gives him a chance to reconnect with his father and
to demonstrate his toughness. However, with certain prison wardens
not averse to using extreme violence to enforce order and protect
others, Eric may have to tread carefully and pay attention to the
calming words of his father if he is to make it out of the facility
in one piece.

This text contains articles on issues such as: transnational
terrorism; limitations on the power of the UN Security Council to
exercise its enforcement powers under Chapter VII of the Charter;
on the uniting of States in respect of treaties; and the weighing
of evidence in a dual national case at the Iran-United States
Claims Tribunal. The documentation section surveys Dutch state
practice for the parliamentary year 1994-1995; international
agreements to which the Netherlands is a party; Netherlands
judicial decisions and municipal legislation involving questions of
public international law, and Dutch literature in the field of
public international law and related matters. This Yearbook is
included in the 1995 subscription to the Netherlands International
Law Review (Volume 42).
By describing and analysing the process which precedes
decision-making in the Council of Ministers, an insider's view is
presented in this book of the process of decision-making in the
European Union. The main subject is the Permanent Representatives
Committee, comprising Ambassadors of the Member States to the
European Union, the Permanent Representatives. Coreper has the
general responsibility for preparing the work of the Council.
The book is based on a legal thesis, which was published in
Dutch at the end of 1993. For the English version the text has been
revised and, where necessary, updated. The content, which is
largely derived from practical experience, should provide a clearer
picture of the current state of affairs of European integration in
general, and the functioning of the European institutions in
particular. To this extent the book serves the political objective
of creating transparency in the decision-making of the European
Union.
Audience:
All those working in the public services, international
organizations, universities, liberal professions and economic life
whose everyday work brings them into contact with aspects of the
European Union and its institutions.
Two major factors brought about the establishment of the
Netherlands Yearbook of International Law in 1970: demand for the
publication of national practice in international law, and the
desirability for legal practitioners, state representatives and
international lawyers to have access to the growing amount of
available data, in the form of articles, notes etc. The
Documentation section contains an extensive review of Dutch state
practice from the parliamentary year prior to publication, an
account of developments relating to treaties and other
international agreements to which the Netherlands is a party,
summaries of Netherlands judicial decisions involving questions of
public international law (many not published elsewhere), lists of
Dutch publications in the field and extracts from relevant
municipal legislation. Although the NYIL has a distinctive national
character it is published in English, and the editors do not adhere
to any geographical limitations when deciding upon the inclusion of
articles.

In our everyday activities we use material objects in different
shapes and forms to solve various practical problems. We may use a
knife to tighten a screw, turn an old washing machine drum into a
fireplace, use the edge of a kitchen countertop to open a bottle,
or place a hammer on the puncture patch glued to a bike's inner
tube to exert pressure on the patch until the glue dries. How
should we identify these objects? What functions do they have? If
we want to understand the role which material objects play in our
everyday activities, we need to move away from universal
identifications of objects. This is because universal
identifications are not sensitive to contextual differences and
cannot describe how each individual user connects to their
surrounding objects in an infinite variety of contexts. Problem
Solving Technologies provides a user-friendly understanding of
technological objects. This book develops a framework to
characterise and categorize technological objects at the level of
users' subjective experiences.
Safety or protective grounding is of vital importance for the
protection of individuals from electric shock and structures and
industrial concerns from potentially damaging lightning and
electrostatic discharges. To many electrical engineers the notion
of grounding is nebulous and safety grounding is quite often
confused with neutral grounding of the power supply. The main
objective of this book is to give the reader a better understanding
of safety grounding, why it is needed, where it is needed, and what
are the requirements which must be met in order to have an
effective grounding system. The text as a whole serves to provide
the reader with the necessary background for a better appreciation
of the various National and International Standards concerned with
safety grounding. This book gives the reader a good understanding
of the fundamentals of safety grounding. It is a practical guide
that provides a comprehensive coverage of all types of grounding
requirements and is intended for students and practicing electrical
engineers alike. Summarizes the physiological effects of current on
the human body and the effect of current duration Gives the various
methods of measuring soil resistivity and measuring the resistance
to ground of an electrode or grounding system Reviews different
types of ground electrodes and the effect of their geometry and
numbers on the resistance to ground Presents the components of a
ground system, methods of improving soil resistivity, the types of
welds and joints, the criteria for determining conductor
cross-sections, galvanic corrosion, and a survey of the different
grounding practices used at substations and the different types of
grounding systems used for the protection of consumers Deals with
electrostatic and lightning hazards that can cause serious damage
and the measures used to protect against such damage Throughout the
text frequent reference is made to various National and
International Standards and their requirements as compliance with
these standards is highly advised Asser A. Zaky, Ph.D., FIET,

The 1998 Netherlands Yearbook of International Law contains expert
articles on issues such as new challenges to IMF jurisdiction, and
a perspective on provisional measures under UNCLOS. The
documentation section surveys: Dutch state practice for the
parliamentary year 1996-1997; international agreements to which the
Netherlands is a party; Netherlands judicial decisions and
municipal legislation involving questions of public international
law; and Dutch literature in the field of public international law
and related matters. The Yearbook is included in the 1998
subscription to the Netherlands International Law Review (Volume
45).

Haile Selassie I, the last emperor of Ethiopia, was as brilliant as
he was formidable. An early proponent of African unity and
independence who claimed to be a descendant of King Solomon, he
fought with the Allies against the Axis powers during World War II
and was a messianic figure for the Jamaican Rastafarians. But the
final years of his empire saw turmoil and revolution, and he was
ultimately overthrown and assassinated in a communist coup. Written
by Asfa-Wossen Asserate, Haile Selassie s grandnephew, this is the
first major biography on this final king of kings. Asserate, who
spent his childhood and adolescence in Ethiopia before fleeing the
revolution of 1974, knew Selassie personally and gained intimate
insights into life at the imperial court. Introducing him as a
reformer and an autocrat whose personal history with all of its
upheavals, promises, and horrors reflects in many ways the history
of the twentieth century itself, Asserate uses his own experiences
and painstaking research in family and public archives to achieve a
colorful and even-handed portrait of the emperor."
