As one of the original Thirteen Colonies and birthplace of the
American Revolution, Massachusetts has continued the rich tradition
of liberty throughout its storied history, becoming a primary
contributor to many fields of human endeavor in American
society.
Massachusetts native August C. Bolino profiles two hundred
significant historical personages from this state in "Men of
Massachusetts." Beginning with a brief history, Bolino traces the
role individual men have played throughout the state's nearly
four-hundred-year history, offering a concise and informative
profile of each one. He discusses how Massachusetts has been a
leader in reform movements, including education, the abolition of
slavery, and women's and African American suffrage.
In addition, Bolino depicts how people of Massachusetts spread
culture in literature, music, entertainment, and sports, championed
liberty, encouraged entrepreneurship, and paved the way for us in
the twenty-first century. Profiles include such storied figures as
John Adams and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Henry David Thoreau and
Nathaniel Hawthorne, Elias Howe and Calvin Coolidge, and, of
course, the Kennedy family.
A true testament to the remarkable achievements of the people of
Massachusetts, this compendium shows the fruits of true liberal
philosophy.
The cataclysmic collision of two great religions
As the Seljuk Turks pressed ever closer to the Byzantine Empire,
the stage became set for a conflict of faith and political interest
which would bathe the known world with blood and create lasting
animosities the ramifications of which would be felt through the
centuries to the present day. The original ideological mission
clearly offered opportunities of the most material kind which were
readily apparent to the soldiers of fortune of Northern Europe.
What began, for some, as essentially a relief mission quickly
acquired a new objective, which because of its inspirational as
well as its financial potential soon became its primary one-the
taking of the city of Jerusalem, sacred to both religious factions.
The First Crusade was to become the precursor of many wars of
belief and power between the West and East. It brought to the fore
men of great military ability, avarice and influence on both sides.
It was a long, hard campaign fought across the Middle East and
brought collisions in open battle and the sieges of great cities
and citadels-both assaulted and defended. This book chronicles that
crusade's history.
Poised on the verge of World War II, America in 1939 was a land of
contrasts. The nation was finally pulling out of the Great
Depression, but war-clouds gathered on the horizon. Scientific
developments offered promising new advances, yet they would soon
become the tools of war. This study offers a detailed look at life
in this watershed year to determine how Americans understood the
conditions of their day and how they turned to escapism when their
burdens became too heavy. From the royal visit to the World's
Fairs, most Americans looked ahead to a brighter future.
Professional athletics, Hollywood films, and the Big Bands were a
welcome diversion to hard times and troubling events abroad in
Europe and Asia. This account highlights the most important
political, economic, and social concerns of 1939. The first part,
Documenting America, focuses on the major social and economic
concerns of the American people in 1939. Chapter one examines
religion, race, and crime, while chapters two and three consider
economic difficulties and proposed solutions. Part Two, Some Golden
Ages, includes chapters on the Studio era in Hollywood, Big Bands
and Broadway musicals, art and architecture of the period,
scientific breakthroughs, and sports notables. The final part, It
Happened Over There, completes the picture with two chapters on the
ominous international situation and early American efforts to deal
with the impending war.
The Russian Military Air Fleet in World War I two volume set is a
prodigious scholarly endeavor, offering for the first time in the
English language a close up view of Air Fleet operations and
personnel. Vol.1 is a chronology of the development of aeronautics
and aviation in Russia beginning in the earliest days and the
eventual emergence of the Air Fleet, which is carried through to
its dissolution by the Bolsheviks and the beginning of the Red Air
Fleet in March 1918. There are also chapters on manufacturers,
airmen badges, aviation uniforms, flight helmets, markings, flags
and pennants, organizational charts, maps of the Russian and
Romanian Fronts, and bibliography.

This work documents the rise and fall of Pacific American
Fisheries, a salmon packing company based in Bellingham,
Washington, which also had a substantial presence in Alaska. It
covers the company's history from its beginnings when Roland
Onffroy arrived in early 1898 and saw an opportunity to start a
business and make a mint using the abundant supply of salmon in
nearby Puget Sound, up until its closing in 1966. The company's
story is presented chronologically as unfolding local, regional,
national, and international events impacted the fortunes of the
company, its employees, and the town that housed it. It also takes
a close look at the entrepreneurs, developers, businessmen, and
Asian labor force that were associated with the company. PAF's
history can also be read as the story of how the United States was
developed as people moved from the Atlantic to Pacific coasts and
how the Pacific coast was targeted for development due to its
natural resources that could easily be exploited for profit.

Die 13. Jahrestagung der Deutschen Gesellschaftfur Operations
Research fand vom 12. bis 14. September 1984 an der Hochschule St.
Gallen statt.
leitern wiederum weitgehende Gestaltungsfreiheit ihrer
Programmausschuss thematische Schwerpunkte fur die Tagung setzen;
Themen.
teten Ergebnisse. Sowohl das Programm der Jahrestagung als auch
dieser Ta- gungsband dokumentieren somit sie vielfaltigen
Aktivitaten der DGOR, Operations Research in der Wirtschaft, in der
Wissenschaft und in der Verwaltung zu fordern.
The First Crusade was one of the epoch-making events of history. It
is also one of the most misunderstood in modern times despite the
wealth of eye-witness records which have survived from that era.
Written by churchmen and common knights, counts and princesses,
these historical accounts and letters present the fervor, intrigue,
despair, jubilation and ferocity of the First Crusade with the
clarity, intensity and shocking honesty of its most passionate
observers and participants. Originally compiled by Professor August
C. Krey in the early 20th century, The First Crusade: The Accounts
of Eye-Witnesses and Participants presents a continuous narrative
from the Council of Clermont to the capture of Jerusalem told
entirely with first-hand accounts. The collection includes
extensive tracts from the anonymous Gesta Francorum, the Historia
Hierosolymiana by Fulcher of Chartres, the history of Raymond of
Aguilers, the Alexiad of Anna Comnena, and many others. Together,
these accounts present a highly readable and vivid history of the
First Crusade and help to reintroduce modern readers to the various
princes and pilgrims, battles and sieges, saints and villains,
relics and holy places which were once famous throughout the world
in history, literature and legend.
ganz neuartige tech nische Anwendungen.
bisher Erarbeitete in Buchform niederzulegen.
Energieelektronik werde."
