Der Theologe August Wilhelm Dieckhoff untersucht im vorliegenden Band das Verhaltnis zwischen religioser und staatlicher Ehe, die sich als obligatorische Zivilehe seit Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zunehmend als rechtsgultige Form durchzusetzen begann und im Zuge das Kulturkampfes 1875 gesetzlich festgelegt wurde. Dieckhoff hingegen betont die soziale und religiose Bedeutung der Trauung und fordert die Abschaffung der Zivilehe.
