Confessions by St. Augustine is the most well-known and influential Christian autobiography in existence. Augustine (354-430 A.D.), who was the Bishop of Hippo in North Africa, lived a wild, hedonistic life prior to his legendary conversion. Confessions is Augustine's first-hand account of his life and conversion, reading like a diary, and it also serves as on ongoing prayer. To his homilies we owe most of his exegetical labors. The homilies were delivered extempore. They retain their colloquial form and devotional tone.
