Far from its sites of origin in the Global North, metal music
thrives in the hands of musicians, fans, and scholars throughout
other geographies of the world. Metal in the Global South, the
latter defined as a geographical and symbolic space marked by the
colonial dynamics of modernity, shines through in Defiant Sounds:
Heavy Metal Music in the Global South. The volume brings together
authors working from and/or with the Global South to reflect on the
roles of metal music throughout their respective regions. With
contributions spanning Latin America, Africa, the Middle East,
Asia, Oceania, and Indigenous Nations, the essays position metal
music at the epicenter of region-specific experiences of oppression
marked by colonialism, ethnic extermination, political persecution,
and war. More importantly, the authors stress how metal music is
used throughout the Global South to face these oppressive
experiences, foster hope, and promote an agenda that seeks to build
a better world. It may be that metal's greatest contribution to
human emancipation will be in the years to come, in places its
originators never imagined. This volume offers evidence of that
contribution already taking place in the geographical and symbolic
space that we respectfully and emphatically call the Distorted
South.
Focused on stem cell applications, this book bridges the fields of
biomaterials, offering new insights into constructing and
regenerating tissues and organs. Its unique feature is linking
diseases of the human body to current thinking on how to deal with
them in the context of current concepts and technologies by means
of an in-depth focus on biomaterials. The book assembles recent
advances and covers a range of topics related to stem cell biology,
biomaterials and technological approaches such as bioreactors
written by top researchers in the field. Stem cells of both
embryonic and adult origin are discussed with applications ranging,
but not limited to, nerve regeneration, liver, pancreas, skin,
trachea, cartilage and bone repair and cardiovascular therapy.
Developments in the field reflecting the design and construction of
the human body and its principal anatomy are discussed from a
materials point of view. The book will be a valuable tool for
biomaterial scientists, tissue engineers, clinicians as well as
stem cell biologists involved in basic research and applications of
adult and embryonic stem cells. It will also be a source of
reference for students in biotechnology, biomedical engineering,
biology, biochemistry, materials sciences, pharmaceuticals, and
veterinary and human medicine.

Primary reconstructive surgery is assuming increasing importance in
the management of fractures of the spine. Analysis of the injury
and thus surgical decision-making are greatly facilitated by the
diagnostic power of CT and MRI. This volume provides a systemic
introduction to the interpretation of CT and MRI images of injuries
to the spinal column and the spinal cord, with special emphasis on
the assessment or residual stability. Since survey X-rays remain
the indispensable first step in radiodiagnosis, the typical
appearances of spinal injuries on conventional films are also
shown. This will help the reader interpret the CT and MRI images
and also reflects the procedure in radiologic practice. The books
classification of spinal fractures, together with the attempt to
conclude how the injury happened by analyzing the damage caused,
paves the way for individually oriented therapy.
Heiko A. Oberman's Masters of the Reformation - first published in
German under the title Werden and Wertung der Reformation - is a
general survey of academic thought and its impact on a wider world
from the later Middle Ages to the emergence of Luther and the city
Reformation. The book uses the early history of the University of
Tubingen to illuminate late fifteenth-century theological
developments and the first stirrings of the Reformation. Oberman
shows from the beginning that the University of Tubingen was no
ivory tower. Rather, it was a vantage point from which important
trends were discerned and vital impulses disseminated. In a second
section, he then describes the creation of a distinctive Tubingen
school', actively involved in the territorial policies of
Wurttemberg and wrestling with the major ethical problems of the
day. In the third section of the book, convincing links are
established between the nominalist tradition and the intellectual
context of the south German Reformation. Oberman emphasises the
practical application of theology to social and ethical issues, and
shows how this prepared the way for the Reformation as a spiritual
and material liberation.
