Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not

Simple life in small-town America collides with the cultural
realities of the 1980s in Spite the Devil, a novel of conflict and
hope. Elinor and her husband, Dan, a Lutheran minister, confront
racism and religious uncertainty as they deal with the changes that
life brings to their faith. Does tragedy destroy faith? Is
bitterness inevitable? Their comfortable existence explodes when
the turmoil of modern American life invades Evittsburg and forces
them to face new and painful truths. Racial tensions strain
relationships to the breaking point, and religious differences
threaten to tear families apart. Elinor's whimsical perspective
cushions misfortune until she faces the one blow that even humor
cannot soften. Daughters Grace and Joy pursue their own paths,
coloring their parents' lives with laughter and discord. Grace's
interracial marriage to Doug creates disturbing tensions, which
involve Doug's enigmatic father, Robey, and their teenage son, Gil,
Golden Gil, who dances across the pages with wit and a worrisome
innocence. With insight, humor, and compassion, McDaniel builds
genuine suspense to a shattering climax, and then finds a certain
peace in the conviction that death is not the end.

Adapted and abridged by Aurand Harris
Comedy
Characters: 3 male, 2 female. Interior Set
Probably Shaw's most popular play, "Candida" recounts the love
sickness of young poet Eugene Marchbanks for Candida, wife of the
Rev. Morell. At first, Morell is amused; but when he begins to
doubt his wife's love, he becomes disturbed and angered. The poet
becomes the stronger suitor, Morell realizes his weaknesses and
Candida, one of the most remarkable women in dramatic literature,
gives strength to her husband and teaches Marchbanks how to love.
Harris offers a superb adaptation for competition, for study, and
for introduction to one of the classics of modern theatre.
There is an increasing demand for food technologists who are not
only familiar with the practical aspects of food processing and mer
chandising but who are also well grounded in chemistry as it
relates to the food industry. Thus, in the training of food
technologists there is a need for a textbook that combines both
lecture material and lab oratory experiments involving the major
classes of foodstuffs and food additives. To meet this need this
book was written. In addition, the book is a reference text for
those engaged in research and technical work in the various
segments of the food industry. The chemistry of representative
classes of foodstuffs is considered with respect to food
composition, effects of processing on composition, food
deterioration, food preservation, and food additives. Standards of
identity for a number of the food products as prescribed by law are
given. The food products selected from each class of foodstuffs for
lab oratory experimentation are not necessarily the most important
eco nomically or the most widely used. However, the experimental
methods and techniques utilized are applicable to the other
products of that class of foodstuff. Typical food adjuncts and
additives are discussed in relation to their use in food products,
together with the laws regulating their usage. Laboratory
experiments are given for the qualitative identification and
quantitative estimation of many of these substances."
