This collection of new essays examines third-generation Holocaust
narratives and the inter-generational transmission of trauma and
memory. This collection demonstrates the ways in which memory of
the Holocaust has been passed along inter-generationally from
survivors to the second-generation-the children of survivors-to a
contemporary generation of grandchildren of survivors-those writers
who have come of literary age at a time that will mark the end of
direct survivor testimony. This collection, in drawing upon a
variety of approaches and perspectives, suggests the rich and fluid
range of expression through which stories of the Holocaust are
transmitted to and by the third generation, who have taken on the
task of bearing witness to the enormity of the Holocaust and the
ways in which this pronounced event has shaped the lives of the
descendants of those who experienced the trauma first-hand. The
essays collected-essays written by renowned scholars in Holocaust
literature, philosophy, history, and religion as well as by
third-generation writers-show that Holocaust literary
representation has continued to flourish well into the twenty-first
century, gaining increased momentum as a third generation of
writers has added to the growing corpus of Holocaust literature.
Here we find a literature that laments unrecoverable loss for a
generation removed spatially and temporally from the extended
trauma of the Holocaust. The third-generation writers, in writing
against a contemporary landscape of post-apocalyptic apprehension
and anxiety, capture and penetrate the growing sense of loss and
the fear of the failure of memory. Their novels, short stories, and
memoirs carry the Holocaust into the twenty-first century and
suggest the future of Holocaust writing for extended generations.

Jewish Responses to Persecution: Volume II, 1938-1940 is the second
volume of the five-volume set within the series "Documenting Life
and Destruction: Holocaust Sources in Context." This volume brings
together in an accessible historical narrative a broad range of
documents-including diaries, letters, speeches, newspaper articles,
reports, Jewish identity cards, and personal photographs-from Jews
in Nazi-dominated Europe and beyond Europe's borders. The volume
skillfully illuminates the daily lives of a diverse range of Jews
who suffered under Nazism, their coping strategies, and their
efforts to assess the implications for the present and future of
the persecution they faced during this period. Volume II begins
with Kristallnacht in 1938 and continues through the Jewish flight
out of Germany, the onset of World War II, the forced relocation of
the Jews of Europe to the East, and the formation of Jewish
ghettos, particularly in Poland. The twelve chapters, divided into
four parts, track the trajectory of German expansion and
anti-Jewish policies chronologically, attesting to a clear
progression of persecution over time and space. At the same time,
they reflect the vast differences in the responses of Jewish
communities, groups, and individuals within and beyond the Germans'
grasp, differences that resulted both from the unevenness of the
Reich's policy toward Jews as well as the varied backgrounds,
traditions, expectations, and life histories of Jews affected by
German policy. This volume raises essential questions, such as:
What was the spectrum of Jewish perceptions and actions under Nazi
domination? How did Jews affected directly, or others standing on
the outside, view the situation? In what ways were Jews able to
influence their own fate under persecution? What role did Jewish
tradition play in how the present and future were interpreted? The
answers inherent in the documents are often varied or inconclusive;
nonetheless these sources add considerably to our understanding of
the Holocaust.

does. The Shoah has become synonymous with unspeakable atrocity and
unbearable suffering. Yet it has also been used to teach tolerance,
empathy, resistance, and hope. Understanding and Teaching the
Holocaust provides a starting point for teachers in many
disciplines to illuminate this crucial event in world history for
students. Using a vast array of source materials-from literature
and film to survivor testimonies and interviews-the contributors
demonstrate how to guide students through these sensitive and
painful subjects within their specific historical and social
contexts. Each chapter provides pedagogical case studies for
teaching content such as antisemitism, resistance and rescue, and
the postwar lives of displaced persons. It will transform how
students learn about the Holocaust and the circumstances
surrounding it.

political, cultural, and social functions in the wake of horror.
Co-editors David Slucki, Gabriel N. Finder, and Avinoam Patt have
assembled an impressive list of contributors who examine what is at
stake in deploying humor in representing the Holocaust. Namely,
what are the boundaries? Clearly, there have been comedy and
laughter in the decades since. However, the extent to which humor
can be ethically deployed in representing and discussing the
Holocaust is not as clear. This book comes at an important moment
in the trajectory of Holocaust memory. As the generation of
survivors continues to dwindle, there is great concern among
scholars and community leaders about how memories and lessons of
the Holocaust will be passed to future generations. Without
survivors to tell their stories, to serve as constant reminders of
what they experienced, how will future generations understand and
relate to the Shoah? Laughter After is divided into two sections:
"Aftermath" and "Breaking Taboos." The contributors to this volume
examine case studies from World War II to the present day in
considering and reconsidering what role humor can play in the
rehabilitation of survivors, of Jews and of the world more broadly.
More recently, humor has been used to investigate the role that
Holocaust memory plays in contemporary societies, while challenging
memorial conventions around the Holocaust and helping shape the way
we think about the past. In a world in which Holocaust memory is
ubiquitous, even if the Holocaust itself is inadequately
understood, it is perhaps not surprising that humor that invokes
the Holocaust has become part of the memorial landscape. This book
seeks to uncover how and why such humor is deployed, and what the
factors are that shape its production and reception. Laughter After
will appeal to a number of audiences-from students and scholars of
Jewish and Holocaust studies to academics and general readers with
an interest in media and performance studies.

J. Patt analyzes how the heroic saga of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
was mythologized in a way that captured the attention of Jews
around the world, allowing them to imagine what it might have been
like to be there, engaged in the struggle against the Nazi
oppressor. The timing of the uprising, coinciding with the
transition to memorialization and mourning, solidified the event as
a date to remember both the heroes and the martyrs of Warsaw, and
of European Jewry more broadly. The Jewish Heroes of Warsaw
includes nine chapters. Chapter 1 includes a brief history of
Warsaw from 1939 to 1943, including the creation of the ghetto and
the development of the Jewish underground. Chapter 2 examines how
the uprising was reported, interpreted, and commemorated in the
first year after the revolt. Chapter 3 concerns the desire for
first-person accounts of the fighters. Chapter 4 examines the ways

The JDC at 100: A Century of Humanitarianism traces the history of
the JDC-an organization founded to aid victims of World War I that
has played a significant role in preserving and sustaining Jewish
life across the globe. The thirteen essays in this volume, edited
by Avinoam Patt, Atina Grossmann, Linda G. Levi, and Maud S.
Mandel, reflect critically on the organization's transformative
impact on Jewish communities throughout the world, covering topics
such as aid for refugees from National Socialism in Cuba, Shanghai,
Tehran, the Dominican Republic, France, Belgium, and Australia;
assistance to Holocaust survivors in Displaced Persons camps for
rebuilding and emigration; and assistance in Rome and Vienna to
Soviet Jewish transmigrants in the 1970s. Despite the sustained
transnational humanitarian work of this pioneering non-governmental
organization, scholars have published surprisingly little devoted
to the history and remarkable accomplishments of the JDC, nor have
they comprehensively explored the JDC's role on the ground in many
regions and cultures. This volume seeks to address those gaps not
only by assessing the widespread impact of the JDC but also by
showcasing the richness and depth of the JDC Archives as a resource
for examining modern Jewish history in global context. The JDC at
100 is addressed to scholars and students of humanitarian aid,
conflict, displacement, and immigration, primarily in Jewish,
European, and American history. It will also appeal to readers with
a more general interest in Jewish studies and refugee studies,
