Also the hundred years literature is completely silent on the on the analysis of waxes of S. nigrum with respect to its taxonomical detail. Five selected plants of S.nigrum Complex among most authorized taxonomists. Therefore, thorough investigation of epicuticular waxes of these five plants of S. nigrum Complex and its possible utilization in chemotaxonomy for their correct classification. The compounds identified were: Squalene; Tetradecane; Hexadecane; Octadecane; Tritetracontane; Heptadecane; Heneicosane; Ascorbic acid; Eicosane; Phytol; 1,2-Benzenedicarboxylic acid; cis-1-chloro-9-octadecene; Ditetradecyl ether; 2,6-Diisopropylnaphthalene; Cyclodecasiloxane; Spirost-8-en-11-one; Hexadecanoic acid; cis, cis, cis-7,10,13-Hexadecatrienal; 9,9 -Dimethoxybicyclo 3.3.1] nona-2,4-dione; Bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate; 2,6,10,14,18,22-Tetracosahexene and 2,6,10,14,18-Pentamethyl-2,6-10,14-18-eicosapentaene.
Herbal medicines are gaining attention day by day and Solanum nigrum is one of the traditional medicinal plants used in ethanobotanic systems throughout the world. These plants have been traditionally used as an analgesic, antiseptic, antidysentric, tonic, laxative, anticancer and antiulcer etc. Locally available taxa of Solanum nigrum Complex were investigated to determine their medicinal, nutritional and antioxidant values and evaluate their chemotaxonomy. GC-MS analysis of the n-hexane-extracts showed the presence of Squalene, Phytol, Palmitic acid, Linolenic acid, ester of Palmitoleic acid along with a variety of hydrocarbons as the chemical constituents. Solanums are famous for alkaloids. Several glycoalkaloids (Solasonine, -Solamargine, -Solamargine and - Solanine) and their aglycones (Solasodine and Solanidine) were analyzed by HPLC and GC-MS. Flavonoids are secondary metabolites that are powerful antioxidants. Total flavonoid contents in the taxa were determined by two complementary colorimetric methods. Glycones and aglycones of Quercetin were examined that had been reported to be valuable medicinally active compound.
