Joshua B. Hill, Nancy E. Marion
R2,330 Discovery Miles 23 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Explaining cybercrime in a highly networked world, this book provides a comprehensive yet accessible summary of the history, modern developments, and efforts to combat cybercrime in various forms at all levels of government-international, national, state, and local. As the exponential growth of the Internet has made the exchange and storage of information quick and inexpensive, the incidence of cyber-enabled criminal activity-from copyright infringement to phishing to online pornography-has also exploded. These crimes, both old and new, are posing challenges for law enforcement and legislators alike. What efforts-if any-could deter cybercrime in the highly networked and extremely fast-moving modern world? Introduction to Cybercrime: Computer Crimes, Laws, and Policing in the 21st Century seeks to address this tough question and enables readers to better contextualize the place of cybercrime in the current landscape. This textbook documents how a significant side effect of the positive growth of technology has been a proliferation of computer-facilitated crime, explaining how computers have become the preferred tools used to commit crimes, both domestically and internationally, and have the potential to seriously harm people and property alike. The chapters discuss different types of cybercrimes-including new offenses unique to the Internet-and their widespread impacts. Readers will learn about the governmental responses worldwide that attempt to alleviate or prevent cybercrimes and gain a solid understanding of the issues surrounding cybercrime in today's society as well as the long- and short-term impacts of cybercrime. Provides accessible, comprehensive coverage of a complex topic that encompasses identity theft to copyright infringement written for non-technical readers Pays due attention to important elements of cybercrime that have been largely ignored in the field, especially politics Supplies examinations of both the domestic and international efforts to combat cybercrime Serves an ideal text for first-year undergraduate students in criminal justice programs

Research on the African-American Family - A Holistic Perspective (Hardcover): Wornie L. Reed Research on the African-American Family - A Holistic Perspective (Hardcover)
Wornie L. Reed; Robert B. Hill
R2,052 Discovery Miles 20 520 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Black families in America face special and grave problems. Widespread unemployment, single parent circumstances, adolescent pregnancies, substance abuse, and violence are only some of the problems posing challenges. The authors, convinced that the conventional perspective used in the past to analyze black families is deficient, propose a holistic approach. That perspective takes into account the totality of black family life rather than measuring isolated factors. Using black families as the central unit of analysis, the authors identify fundamental issues requiring concentrated attention and policy changes. Both factors external to the black family and consideration internal to it are studied. The former include economic factors---racism, demographics, and governmental policies. The latter involve such aspects as black family structure, changes in the community, and widespread changes in values at the individual level. The authors provide practical recommendations for improving the conditions of black families through policy changes and revised priorities.

Unconventional Warriors - The Fantasy of the American Resistance Fighter in Television and Film (Hardcover): Matthew B. Hill Unconventional Warriors - The Fantasy of the American Resistance Fighter in Television and Film (Hardcover)
Matthew B. Hill
R1,572 Discovery Miles 15 720 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Tracing the "American Guerrilla" narrative through more than one hundred years of film and television, this book shows how the conventions and politics of this narrative influence Americans to see themselves as warriors, both on screen and in history. American guerrillas fight small-scale battles that, despite their implications for large-scale American victories, often go untold. This book evaluates those stories to illumine the ways in which film and television have created, reinforced, and circulated an "American Guerrilla" fantasy—a mythic narrative in which Americans, despite having the most powerful military in history, are presented as underdog resistance fighters against an overwhelming and superior occupying evil. Unconventional Warriors: The Fantasy of the American Resistance Fighter in Television and Film explains that this fantasy has occupied the center of numerous war films and in turn shaped the way in which Americans see those wars and themselves. Informed by the author's expertise on war in contemporary literature and popular culture, this book begins with an introduction that outlines the basics of the "American Guerrilla" narrative and identifies it as a recurring theme in American war films. Subsequent chapters cover one hundred years of American "guerrillas" in film and television. The book concludes with a chapter on science fiction narratives, illustrating how the conventions and politics of these stories shape even the representation of wholly fictional, imagined wars on screen.

The New Art of Old Public Science Communication - The Science Slam (Hardcover): Miira B. Hill The New Art of Old Public Science Communication - The Science Slam (Hardcover)
Miira B. Hill
R4,455 Discovery Miles 44 550 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book investigates the phenomenon of science communication events, as spectacles for legitimising and communicating science to the public. With attention to events such as 'Science Slam', where scientists are asked to present their knowledge in new ways and speak to an audience of laymen, the author examines the participants' use of stylistic devices borrowed from other events in order to address a diverse audience in a competitive environment. With attention to the performative appearance of scientists on stage and the manner in which contemporary public performing scientists present, problematise, and communicate knowledge, the author considers the justifications offered by participants in terms of legitimacy and expectations. Illustrating the crucial role of bodies, techniques, visuals, and objects in the communicative construction of (scientific) reality, The New Art of Old Public Science Communication: The Science Slam sheds new light on the construction of improved science communication. As such, it will appeal to social scientists with interests in science communication, the sociology of science and technology, and the sociology of knowledge.

Paul Fyfe, Antony Harrison, David B. Hill, Sharon L. Joffe, Sharon M. Setzer
R1,903 Discovery Miles 19 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the significance of the now-lost pavilion built in the Buckingham Palace Gardens in the time of Queen Victoria for understanding experiments in British art and architecture at the outset of the Victorian era. It introduces the curious history of the garden pavilion, its experimental contents, the controversies of its critical reception, and how it has been digitally remediated. The chapters discuss how the pavilion, decorated with frescos and encaustics by some of the most prominent painters of the mid-nineteenth century, became the center of a national conversation about an identity for British art, the capacity of its artists, and the quality of Royal and public taste. Beyond an examination of the pavilion's history, this book also introduces a digital model which restores the pavilion to virtual life, underscoring the importance of the pavilion for Victorian aesthetics and culture.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Food Science (Hardcover): B Hills Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Food Science (Hardcover)
B Hills
R5,337 Discovery Miles 53 370 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Hills is probably the best person I can think of to write this book. He has the deepest background combined with considerable experience in solving problems with food." —R. G. Bryant, University of Virginia.

Food scientists have many excellent tools at their disposal with which to study food at both the micro- and macrostructural levels. But, when it comes to analyzing dynamic structural changes in food during processing and storage, none can compare with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Still a very young approach, MRI food imaging has contributed greatly to recent advances in food science, and promises to yield much more valuable information in the years ahead. Written by a leading pioneer in the field, Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Food Science covers the latest in MRI food imaging theory and practice.

Written primarily for food scientists and engineers, the book offers a practical, unified approach to the subject. Material is organized in three main parts corresponding to the distances of scale probed by MRI studies—namely, the macroscopic, microscopic, and macromolecular. Throughout, the emphasis is on ways in which studies of food undergoing processes can be modeled using the equations of heat, mass, and momentum transport, and how those models can be used in process design optimization programs.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Food Science provides researchers with the most up-to-date, detailed coverage of:

  • Traditional and cutting-edge MRI food imaging techniques and technologies, including STRAFI, gradient-echo imaging, and functional imaging
  • Whole plant functional imaging, flow imaging and rheology, and other specialized MRI applications
  • The roles of food microstructure and molecular relaxation mechanisms in controlling moisture and heat transport
  • Techniques for modeling structural changes during food processing.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Food Science is an important working resource for all researchers engaged in the never-ending struggle to produce safer, higher-quality foods more efficiently.

Beyond the Tides - Classic Tales of Richard M. Hallet (Paperback): Frederic B. Hill Beyond the Tides - Classic Tales of Richard M. Hallet (Paperback)
Frederic B. Hill
R776 Discovery Miles 7 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Before passing up a career in law for the writing life, Richard Matthews Hallett lived an exciting life of adventure, that included a stint as a police officer, and as a seaman aboard a schooner bound for Australia. He then trekked across that country and lived by his wits in England for a time before returning to the States. Later, he was a deck officer on warships convoying soldiers and horses across the Atlantic in WW I, and facing U-boat attacks. Over is life, Hallett wrote several novels and more than 200 short stories that were published in the most widely read magazines of the day, including the Saturday Evening Post, Harper's, Atlantic, Collier's, Everybody's, and American Legion Monthly. The stories gathered here, published in the first half of the twentieth century, include vivid tales of the sea, both in the days of sail and in the midst of war, often built around ship-board tensions and tumult; and stories of Maine and New England and their small town values and rivalries.

Social Ecology and Education - Transforming Worldviews and Practices (Hardcover): David Wright, Stuart B Hill Social Ecology and Education - Transforming Worldviews and Practices (Hardcover)
David Wright, Stuart B Hill
R4,464 Discovery Miles 44 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Social Ecology and Education addresses "ecological understanding" as a transformative educational issue: a learning response to emerging insights into social-ecological relationships and the future of life on our planet. In the face of the existential threats posed by climate change, loss of biodiversity, pandemids and the associated ecological and social challenges; there is a need to extend our responses beyond scientific inquiry and technological initiatives. This book seeks to move the dialogue towards a deeper and broader understanding of the complexities of the issues involved. To achieve this, the book discusses issues rarely addressed through programs in "Education for Sustainability" and "Environmental Education," such as student defined knowledge systems, deep engagement with the implications of indigenous understandings, climate change as symptomatic of broad epistemological problems, social disengagement and differentiated barriers to meaningful change. This work is enriched by its focus on the learning and the learning systems that have led to our current predicament. This book seeks to initiate considerations of this kind, to invigorate education for sustainable, equitable, healthy and meaningful futures. As such, this book will be of great interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students in a range of education and environmental courses.

Christopher H. Sterling, James K Bracken, Susan B Hill; Contributions by Pamela Czapla, Harry Sova, …
R4,214 Discovery Miles 42 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This reference book is designed as a road map for researchers who need to find specific information about American mass communication as expeditiously as possible. Taking a topical approach, it integrates publications and organizations into subject-focused chapters for easy user reference. The editors define mass communication to include print journalism and electronic media and the processes by which they communicate messages to their audiences. Included are newspaper, magazine, radio, television, cable, and newer electronic media industries. Within that definition, this volume offers an indexed inventory of more than 1,400 resources on most aspects of American mass communication history, technology, economics, content, audience research, policy, and regulation.
The material featured represents the carefully considered judgment of three experts -- two of them librarians -- plus four contributors from different industry venues. The primary focus is on the domestic American print and electronic media industries. Although there is no claim to a complete census of all materials on print journalism and electronic media -- what is available is now too vast for any single guide -- the most important and useful items are here. The emphasis is on material published since 1980, though useful older resources are included as well. Each chapter is designed to stand alone, providing the most important and useful resources of a primary nature -- organizations and documents as well as secondary books and reports. In addition, online resources and internet citations are included where possible.

The Wooden Architecture of Northern Europe - From the Viking Era to the 20th Century (Hardcover): John B. Hilling The Wooden Architecture of Northern Europe - From the Viking Era to the 20th Century (Hardcover)
John B. Hilling
R1,369 Discovery Miles 13 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the wealth of wooden architecture that is to be found in Northern Europe, in particular, the Fennoscandian Peninsula. This distinct region, which includes Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Russian Republic of Karelia, was dominated by coniferous forest and remained until well into the 20th century a largely rural society. Wood was seen as a living material - one that was permeated with myth and folklore - while the forest itself formed the background to everyday life. Indeed, no single source of material wealth has contributed more to the economy, art and culture of Fennoscandia than the forests. Nowhere is this contribution clearer than in the region's historic buildings, the vast majority of which were constructed in wood up until the late 19th century. This is the first book to examine and record the distinctive wooden architecture of this region from the early medieval period to the early 20th century. Structured according to different wood types, it concentrates on domestic and religious buildings, as these formed the great bulk of historic architecture in the peninsula over many centuries. It begins by setting out the geographical, social and historic background, before discussing the way in which two different timber-building traditions emerged in the region. It then provides a detailed examination of different types of dwellings (rural and urban) and storage lofts, followed by a section on Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox churches, along with their free-standing bell-towers. The book concludes with a chapter outlining the development of wooden domestic and religious buildings during the closing decades of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th century.
