A large and growing number of students from culturally and
linguistically diverse backgrounds in the US and around the world
have the potential to develop bilingualism and biliteracy if
supported in their immediate environment. At the forefront in
focusing exclusively on biliteracy development in early childhood
across a variety of languages, this book provides both findings
from empirical research with young bilinguals in home and school
contexts and practical applications of these findings. Each chapter
is structured in a similar format to offer parallel descriptions of
the research, including a brief review of related empirical
studies, an overview of the methods for data collection and
analysis, a description of the main findings, and specific
pedagogical implications to support educators' efforts to construct
meaningful, challenging, and dynamic literacy and language learning
communities where one or more languages are used for communicating
and learning. Pushing the field forward, this book is a valuable
resource for helping literacy educators understand and respond to
critical issues related to the development of young children's
literate competencies in two languages in home and school contexts.
"On Reading Books to Children: Parents and Teachers" brings
together in one volume current research on adult book reading to
children. The authors, drawn from around the world, are key
researchers and eminent scholars from the fields of reading and
literacy, child language, speech pathology, and psychology,
representing multiple perspectives within these disciplines.
Chapters on the effects and limitations of book sharing are
integrated with chapters discussing promising programs on storybook
research. The reality of reading to children is more complex than
it appears on the surface. The authors discuss some effects of and
suggestions for reading to children that have emerged from the
research. The ideas set forth in this volume will stimulate new
lines of research on the effects of storybook reading, as well as
refinements of current methods, yielding findings that enrich our
understanding of this important arena of literacy
development.

Since the pioneering work of Donald and his first Lancet paper in
1958, the use of ultrasound in obstetrics and gynaecology has
evolved rap idly. The introduction of grey scale techniques
enhanced our ability to identify different tissues on the basis of
their texture. However, it was the introduction of the linear array
real-time scanner in the mid seven ties that changed ultrasound
from being an "eccentric art form" to a readily available and
usable technique. This led to the first reports of the diagnosis of
neural tube defects using ultrasound by Campbell, as well as the
establishment of fetal biometry. In the midst of this activity the
parallel development of the transvaginal probe by Kratochwill went
almost unnoticed by most gynaecologists. Yet the application of
this technique has since had a major impact on many areas of gyna
ecological practice, and on infertility in particular. Since the
demon stration of transvaginal follicle aspiration, the vaginal
route has become standard for most invasive ultrasound guided
gynaecological procedures. The relatively new technical advance of
transvaginal colour Doppler may potentially have just as great an
impact. The introduction and use of transvaginal colour flow
imaging has facili tated the study of vascular changes within the
pelvis.

Inscapes is a remarkable memoir about one woman's determination to
follow her desire for a life of spiritual freedom that leads her
from Oregon to San Francisco, to Paris and beyond. The author's
journey of transformation, from solitary alienation to a sense of
belonging in the world, is insightful, funny and moving. Bauer's
exploration of the dynamic influences of "place" offers a powerful
glimpse into her mind and spirit. Each new home that she makes for
herself- whether it be in Oregon, San Francisco, Paris, the Virgin
Islands, Mexico, Baton Rouge, or the High Plains-brings the author
closer to understanding the intimate connection to the natural
world that has shaped much of her inner life. In her uniquely
sparse, ironic prose, Bauer brings to life the episodes and
settings that have defined her existence thus far. From hitchhiking
through Europe and playing an active role in the 1960s cultural
revolution to working as a cook on an island paradise and
discovering her spiritual calling to become a teacher, her travels
provide her with rich opportunities for mapping her inner journey
through life, as she puts "the story I imagined for my life into
play in the outside world."
