Frank Stewart is a naive teenager steeped in religion. He searches for his dream of idealistic love in the mid-twentieth century but is completely unprepared for life in the real world. Disappointed by his early attempts at love, Frank flees to the Army.

During his time in the army, Frank encounters sociopath Allie Johnson, womanizer Chip Clark, stern career soldier Robert E. Lee Porter, and wealthy homosexual Norman Tyson. Tyson introduces Frank to society in Augusta, Georgia, where he gains hope and confidence. Determined to stay in Augusta, Frank requests a discharge from the Army-not even sure what he'll do it if it is granted. Tyson then devastates Frank with an outrageous and utterly unbelievable proposition that brings their friendship to an abrupt end. With his easy money supply gone and his discharge granted, Frank finds a niche with a romantic music show when he secures a position as a disc jockey. He also finds his true love.

Just when the pieces of Frank's life are falling into place, Allie Johnson makes an unexpected reappearance. When a detective from Oklahoma shows up looking for Allie, his desperate attempt to flee dashes Frank's hopes for happiness and teaches him that life is one sojourn after another and that nothing is final-except death.

The Paradox of Aging in Place in Assisted Living (Hardcover): Jacquelyn B. Frank The Paradox of Aging in Place in Assisted Living (Hardcover)
Jacquelyn B. Frank
R2,695 Discovery Miles 26 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Operators of assisted living facilities interpret aging in place very differently than residents do. This difference in interpretation must be taken into account by regulators, policymakers, and operators so that they may reconsider assisted living's place along the traditional continuum of care.

With the growing number of assisted living facilities opening across the United States, it is essential for scholars and practitioners to understand residents' experiences in these environments. The author examines the ideals versus the realities of assisted living and the aging in place/continuum of care debate surrounding assisted living.

While the author presents the results of a detailed, comprehensive anthropological study, she also addresses policy issues which are of concern on the national level. The book combines academic and applied approaches to create an ethnographic fieldwork investigation relevant to housing and health care policies for the elderly in the United States.

Despite his growing distance from God, twenty-seven-year-old David Forester pastors a thriving church. But his sexual frustration leads him to pursue his church's teenage organist and escalates to sexual excesses with parishioner Ruth Dubois.

After his wife exhibits a sudden interest in sex, Reverend Forester tries to end his extramarital liaisons, but Ruth plans to destroy his marriage in order to maintain her hold over him. She then murders a mob boss and steals a fortune to fund the preacher's career in evangelism.

Unfortunately for the reverend, the mob comes after its money, leading to torture, more murder, and flight from prosecution. When a dogged detective tracks Reverend Forester and brings him back to face a double-murder trial, the ever-salacious man of God seduces his beautiful public defender, a twenty-nine-year-old virgin who is tired of the distinction. But will Reverend Forester's final solution be faith-based or lust-driven?

School Behavioral Health - Interconnecting Comprehensive School Mental Health and Positive Behavior Support (Hardcover, 1st ed.... School Behavioral Health - Interconnecting Comprehensive School Mental Health and Positive Behavior Support (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Mark D Weist, Kathleen B. Franke, Robert N. Stevens
R3,508 Discovery Miles 35 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the prevalence of emotional and behavioral problems in youth and the implications of little or low-quality mental health services available for them. It describes aspects of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and school mental health (SMH) that work together to form a comprehensive service delivery model called the Interconnected Systems Framework (ISF). The term school behavioral health (SBH) is used to describe SMH and PBIS working together, as in the ISF. The book examines perspectives of key stakeholders through a series of research forums, during which participants identified critical themes for the advancement of SBH in South Carolina and the southeast region of the United States. Chapters address key themes of school behavioral health from these forums, such as collaboration, schoolwide approaches, quality of services, and support for specific populations, including military families and youth involved in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. The book addresses barriers to providing behavioral health services at school as well as recommendations from key stakeholders for advancing SBH along these critical dimensions. This volume is a must-have resource for researchers, professors, and graduate students as well as practitioners, clinicians, and therapists across such interrelated disciplines as clinical child and school psychology, educational policy and politics, social work, public health, school counseling, family studies, juvenile justice, child and adolescent psychiatry, and child welfare and well-being services.

Psychodynamic Perspectives on Working with Children, Families, and Schools (Hardcover): Michael O'Loughlin Psychodynamic Perspectives on Working with Children, Families, and Schools (Hardcover)
Michael O'Loughlin; Contributions by Michael O'Loughlin, Derek Bunyard, Carrie Catapano, Carola B Chase, …
R2,932 Discovery Miles 29 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With the push toward accountability and test performance in schools there has been a decline in emphasis on creativity, imagination, and feelings in schools. Psychodynamic Perspectives on Working with Children, Families, and Schools is designed for students and professionals who are interested in restoring such values to their work with children. There is an absence of psychoanalytic ways of thinking in conventional professional discourses of schooling. With a few notable exceptions, the discourses of child development, classroom management, early childhood education, special education, school psychology, and school counseling have constructed notions of children and schooling that are often behaviorist, instrumental, and symptom-focused. Curriculum too often focuses on acquisition of knowledge and behaviors; discipline is conceptualized as compliance, and symptoms such as anger, school resistance, etc., are pathologized and reacted to out of context; children's special needs are often conceptualized instrumentally; and children with complex psychological symptoms are delimited, depersonalized, or simply removed. Professionals who work with children psychodynamically draw on diverse frameworks including the work of Anna Freud, the long tradition of the Tavistock Clinic in London [e.g., Anne Alvarez, Susan Reid, Margaret Rustin, Frances Tustin, etc.], the writings of Klein, Winnicott, and their colleagues, French analysts [e.g., Piera Aulagnier, Didier Anzieu, Laurent Danon-Boileau, Francoise Dolto, Maud Mannoni, and Catherine Mathelin] and Italian infant/child analyst Alessandro Piontelli. This work is valuable but often inaccessible to school professionals because the writing is somewhat specialized, and because there is no tradition of teaching such work in professional preparation in those fields. This collection is theoretically grounded in that the authors share a commitment to valuing children's emotions and understand the usefulness of psychoanalytic approaches for enhancing children's lives. It is laden with examples to invite into this discussion those students and professionals who value these ideas but for whom this book may be their first introduction to progressive educational ideals and psychodynamic ways of working with children. Psychodynamic Perspectives on Working with Children, Families, and Schools provides an introductory volume to open the door to the possibility of introducing psychodynamic frameworks to education and human service professors and school professionals and professionals working with children.

In 1937 the swath of the globe from India to Japan contained half the world's population but only two nations with real sovereignty (Japan and Thailand) and two with compromised sovereignty (China and Mongolia). All other peoples in the region endured under some form of colonialism. Today the region contains nineteen fully sovereign nations. Tower of Skulls is the first work to present a unified account of the course and impact of this part of the global war. It expands beyond military elements to highlight the critical political, economic and social reverberations of the struggle. Finally, it provides a graphic depiction of the often forgotten but horrific death toll in the Asia-Pacific region-over 20 million-which continues to shape international relations today.

Persuasion and Healing - A Comparative Study of Psychotherapy (Paperback, third edition): Jerome D. Frank, Julia B. Frank Persuasion and Healing - A Comparative Study of Psychotherapy (Paperback, third edition)
Jerome D. Frank, Julia B. Frank
R753 Discovery Miles 7 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This popular study of "psychological healing"treats topics ranging from religious revivalism and magical healing to contemporary psychotherapies, from the role of the shaman in nonindustrialized societies to the traditional mental hospital. Jerome and Julia Frank (who are father and daughter) contend that these therapies share common elements that improve the "morale"of sufferers. And in combating the "demoralizing meaning"that people attach to their experiences, the authors argue, many therapies are surprisingly similar to rhetoric (the art of persuasion) and to hermeneutics (the study of meanings).

Highly acclaimed in previous editions, "Persuasion and Healing" has been completely revised and expanded. In addition to a broadened exploration of the role of demoralization in illness, this latest edition offers updated information on topics including self-help, family therapy, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy for the mentally ill, and techniques such as primal therapy and bioenergetics. As they explore the power of "healing rhetoric"in these activities, the authors strengthen the ties among the various healing profession.
