The third edition of this bestselling text has been rigorously updated to reflect major new discoveries and concepts since 2011, especially progress due to extensive application of high-throughput sequencing, single cell genomics and analysis of large datasets. Significant advances in understanding the diversity and evolution of bacteria, archaea, fungi, protists, and viruses are discussed and their importance in marine processes is explored in detail. Now in full colour throughout, all chapters have been significantly expanded, with many new diagrams, illustrations and boxes to aid students' interest and understanding. Novel pedagogy is designed to encourage students to explore current high-profile research topics. Examples include the impacts of rising CO2 levels on microbial community structure and ocean processes, interactions of microbes with plastic pollution, symbiotic interactions, and emerging diseases of marine life. This is the only textbook addressing such a broad range of topics in the specific area of marine microbiology, now a core topic within broader Marine Science degrees. A Companion Website provides additional online resources for instructors and students, including a summary of key concepts and terminology for each chapter, links to further resources, and flashcards to aid self-assessment.

Tiarra is half Vulcan and half Earth woman. She has special talents that alert her loved ones to her presence. She is trained to do all jobs on a star fleet star-ship. Her first assignment is on board the S.S. Victor which is captained by her Earthling brother. Tiarra falls in love with another half breed and their union starts a star fleet precedent new to the space community. Tiarra is very much in the Star Trek vein. You may see some similarities but Tiarra is basically a love story between two half Vulcan/half Earth people who experience the Passion Ties of Vulca. One of them is pledged to someone else but the passion tie between Tiarra and Braack cannot be denied. It could be dangerous to the S. S. Victor itself. A duel is committed to break the original passion tie pledge, but not without consequences. The fall out from the duel lingers in their life for quite a while. Some of the quests that the S. S. Victor go on take them to strange new places. One place is where the planet is inhabited by large birds that talk and have a complex society. The crew of the S. S. Victor is dispatched to these people to help them get over the St. Agnes Virus. With that accomplished the Ortelgans were healthy once again. During the beginning of her employment on the S. S. Victor Tiarra was taken by the Darians who were curious as to why a roustabout was so special. When they go her in their clutches and realized she was a woman and not worth anything they try to send her back. Tiarra pretended she was crazy and the captain of the S. S. Victor denied that they were missing any crew members. Things get worked out and Tiarra returns to her ship. There are many more things to keep you interested in finishing the read.
