Journey back to the spring of 1775, when Bennington County, Vermont was no more than the wild frontier of the northern territory. It was from here that the first victory of the American Revolution was won, when Patriot Ethan Allen led the famed Green Mountain Boys to raid and capture towering Fort Ticonderoga from the British.

Two years later, the British were again defeated at the Battle of Bennington, sufferring two hundred casualties and the staggering capture of more than seven hundred soldiers by another Patriot, John Stark.

Dick Smith takes readers through the famed covered bridges, historic taverns and quaint villages of Bennington County that in another life played a vital role in leading our country toward independence.

Darkening Blackness - Race, Gender, Class, and Pessimism in 21st-Century Black Thought: Norman Ajari Darkening Blackness - Race, Gender, Class, and Pessimism in 21st-Century Black Thought
Norman Ajari; Translated by Matthew B. Smith
R522 Discovery Miles 5 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The concept of Afropessimism does not refer to Black people, but rather to the likelihood of white society overcoming its own negrophobia, and to a radical distrust in white narratives of inclusivity. What if the ideas and reforms we regard as progressive were just the new and shiny face of racism? In the time of Black Lives Matter, the unswerving dehumanisation and killing of Black people form the bedrock of our civilization. But a vast anti-Black collective feeling also manifests itself as a more insidious shared unconscious, hidden from view by the doctrines we deem as emancipatory. This book challenges the simplistic and pacifying aspects of current African-American thought. It puts forward alternatives to intersectionality, poststructuralism and radical democracy, which are often prioritized in the Black analysis of race, gender and class. In the twenty-first century, Black studies and Africana philosophy have witnessed the birth of two new fields, Afropessimism and Black Male Studies. Spearheaded by figures such as Tommy J. Curry and Frank Wilderson, they have emerged as truly autonomous ways of interpreting and analysing the causes and consequences of Black rage against systemic racism. Darkening Blackness offers an original genealogy of the new iconoclasm in Black thought. Accessible, historically informed and politically alert, this book is a critical analysis of the groundbreaking theories and strategies which offer a radical reconception of the future of Black lives throughout the world.

The Iron Dice of Battle - Albert Sidney Johnston and the Civil War in the West: Timothy B. Smith The Iron Dice of Battle - Albert Sidney Johnston and the Civil War in the West

R1,026 R822 Discovery Miles 8 220 Save R204 (20%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Killed in action at the bloody Battle of Shiloh, Confederate general Albert Sidney Johnston stands as the highest-ranking American military officer to die in combat. His unexpected demise had cascading negative consequences for the South's war effort, as his absence created a void in adequate leadership in the years that followed. In The Iron Dice of Battle, noted Civil War historian Timothy B. Smith reexamines Johnston's life and death, offering remarkable insights into this often-contradictory figure. As a commander, Johnston frequently faced larger and better-armed Union forces, dramatically shaping his battlefield decisions and convincing him that victory could only be attained by taking strategic risks while fighting. The final wager came while leading his army at Shiloh in April 1862. During a desperate gambit to turn the tide of battle, Johnston charged to the front of the Confederate line to direct his troops and fell mortally wounded after sustaining enemy fire. The first work to survey the general's career in detail in nearly sixty years, The Iron Dice of Battle builds on recent scholarship to provide a new and incisive assessment of Johnston's life, his Confederate command, and the effect his death had on the course of the Civil War in the West.

Integration of Public Health with Adaptation to Climate Change: Lessons Learned and New Directions (Hardcover): Kristie L. Ebi,... Integration of Public Health with Adaptation to Climate Change: Lessons Learned and New Directions (Hardcover)
Kristie L. Ebi, Joel B. Smith, Ian Burton
R5,652 Discovery Miles 56 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Humans have been adapting to a changing climate throughout history. Whether by innovation or migration we have developed a considerable capacity for "acclimatizing" to our environment. Since the mid 19th century, however, the rate of change has been increasing and the fact that this anthropogenically forced acceleration cannot be sufficiently reduced will have a significant impact on public health in the near and medium future. How severe the impact will be depends largely on our capacity to adapt and its effective deployment. By exploring cases histories in public health, Integration of Public Health with Adaptation to Climate Change: Lessons Learned and New Directions identifies the key adjustments necessary for public health systems to effectively adapt to this accelerated climate change. Taking into consideration the large portion of the global population without access to adequate nutrition, clean drinking water, or a viable public health system, the book examines the added influence of climate-sensitive diseases, their mutation, incubation, and migration, on life expectancy, economic productivity, and quality of life. The new challenge is to develop and deploy a capacity for more rapid social and technological adaptation, and to ensure that this capacity is universally and equitably distributed in the face of global environmental change. The option of the hunter/gatherer to simply pick up and move to more attractive climes is no longer available to today's higher population densities and fixed infrastructures. Effective adaptation to this rapid climate change must come from a conscious, planned, anticipatory approach. To do this we must use what we've learned from the lessons ofour past

Coordination Theory and Collaboration Technology (Hardcover): Gary M. Olson, Thomas W. Malone, John B. Smith Coordination Theory and Collaboration Technology (Hardcover)
Gary M. Olson, Thomas W. Malone, John B. Smith
R6,622 Discovery Miles 66 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The National Science Foundation funded the first Coordination Theory and Collaboration Technology initiative to look at systems that support collaborations in business and elsewhere. This book explores the global revolution in human interconnectedness. It will discuss the various collaborative workgroups and their use in technology. The initiative focuses on processes of coordination and cooperation among autonomous units in human systems, in computer and communication systems, and in hybrid organizations of both systems. This initiative is motivated by three scientific issues which have been the focus of separate research efforts, but which may benefit from collaborative research. The first is the effort to discover the principles underlying how people collaborate and coordinate work efficiently and productively in environments characterized by a high degree of decentralized computation and decision making. The second is to gain a better fundamental understanding of the structure and outputs of organizations, industries, and markets which incorporate sophisticated, decentralized information and communications technology as an important component of their operations. The third is to understand problems of coordination in decentralized or open computer systems.

Colors and Textures of Roman North Africa - Essays in Memory of Maureen A. Tilley: Elizabeth A. Clark, Zachary B Smith Colors and Textures of Roman North Africa - Essays in Memory of Maureen A. Tilley
Elizabeth A. Clark, Zachary B Smith
R2,056 Discovery Miles 20 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book serves two purposes: first, it celebrates the career of the late Maureen Tilley; second, it provides a "state of the field" look at some of the latest scholarship on Christian North Africa in late antiquity. The chapters, written by both senior scholars and the next generation of North African researchers, fills gaps in some of our understandings of the colorful people, places, and disputes that arose in the unique environment of Christian North Africa. The book centers around Augustine, Donatist studies, and North African biblical interpretation, representing Tilley's major areas of interest, while also ensuring coverage of Tertullian (a major figure in the North African church and one of Tilley's hobbyhorses) and the pilgrimages to North Africa and other places. It contributes to the field(s) by providing new scholarship from some of the biggest names in Christian North Africa studies (Patout Burns, Robin Jensen, Bill Tabbernee, Anthony Dupont, and Allan Fitzgerald) and in Patristic/early Christian studies writ large (Blake Leyerle and Geoffrey Dunn) while demonstrating the new trajectories of Christian North Africa research from early career (Alden Bass) and emerging (Colum Dever) scholars. The editors were Tilley's dissertation director (the late Liz Clark) and one of her last mentees (Zach Smith), so the entire collection has a meta-view of academic genealogy—knowledge flowing from Tilley's mentor, through colleagues and mentees, and down through and to the next generation who carry on those legacies.

Elsa Asenijeff's Is That Love? and Innocence - A Voice Reclaimed (Hardcover): Elsa Asenijeff Elsa Asenijeff's Is That Love? and Innocence - A Voice Reclaimed (Hardcover)
Elsa Asenijeff; Edited by Eva Hoffmann, Alexis B. Smith
R2,451 Discovery Miles 24 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First English translations of two early feminist short-story collections, shedding light on the "woman question" at the turn of the 20th century and relating to today's #MeToo movement. This edition provides the first English translations of two short-story collections - Is That Love? (1896) and Innocence: A Modern Book for Girls (1901) - by the Austrian writer Elsa Asenijeff (1867-1941). Primarily remembered as the lover and muse of sculptor and painter Max Klinger, in her time Asenijeff was a widely read author. Both books engage with "the woman question" at the turn of the twentieth century: Asenijeff thematizes the lack of education and professional opportunities for women and girls, critiques the bourgeois family as a site of patriarchal power, and sheds light on systemic sexual violence. Is That Love?, in particular, dismantles dominant narratives of romantic love and marriage. Written while Asenijeff was living in Bulgaria, and set there, the text also engages with that country's political turmoil. In Innocence, Asenijeff relies on some of the traditional characteristics of Madchenliteratur, educational literature for girls, but also subverts its conventions. In their introduction, the translators explicate the sociohistorical background of both texts, arguing for Asenijeff's importance in the history of women's writing in the nineteenth- and twentieth-century German-speaking world and placing her within the larger context of the contemporary global #MeToo movement.

Evaluating Climate Change Impacts discusses assessing and quantifying climate change and its impacts from a multi-faceted perspective of ecosystem, social, and infrastructure resilience, given through a lens of statistics and data science. It provides a multi-disciplinary view on the implications of climate variability and shows how the new data science paradigm can help us to mitigate climate-induced risk and to enhance climate adaptation strategies. This book consists of chapters solicited from leading topical experts and presents their perspectives on climate change effects in two general areas: natural ecosystems and socio-economic impacts. The chapters unveil topics of atmospheric circulation, climate modeling, and long-term prediction; approach the problems of increasing frequency of extreme events, sea level rise, and forest fires, as well as economic losses, analysis of climate impacts for insurance, agriculture, fisheries, and electric and transport infrastructures. The reader will be exposed to the current research using a variety of methods from physical modeling, statistics, and machine learning, including the global circulation models (GCM) and ocean models, statistical generalized additive models (GAM) and generalized linear models (GLM), state space and graphical models, causality networks, Bayesian ensembles, a variety of index methods and statistical tests, and machine learning methods. The reader will learn about data from various sources, including GCM and ocean model outputs, satellite observations, and data collected by different agencies and research units. Many of the chapters provide references to open source software R and Python code that are available for implementing the methods.

The Politics Of East-west Trade (Paperback): Gordon B. Smith The Politics Of East-west Trade (Paperback)
Gordon B. Smith
R1,296 Discovery Miles 12 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Trade and technology transfer have come to occupy a major role in Soviet-American relations. Twice in recent years embargoes have been imposed on the sale of U.S. high technology to the U.S.S.R., and these sanctions have had wide-ranging political and economic consequences in the Soviet Union, Europe, and the United States. The Politics of East-West Trade draws together leading U.S. and European scholars, government officials, and businesspeople to explore the complex issues arising from U.S. trade policies toward the Soviet Union. The book begins with an assessment of the degree to which the Soviet economy is dependent on Western technology imports. In subsequent chapters, in addition to assessing the general nature and volume of U. S .-U. S. S .R. trade, the contributors consider the extent to which Western technology has helped or hindered Soviet economic and technological growth; the specific impact of U.S. trade sanctions in four critical sectors (computers, energy, agriculture, and defense); and the impact in the West of U.S. trade policies (for example, recent embargoes have resulted in the loss of several billion dollars in U.S. equipment and commodity sales to the U.S.S.R.). Examining the serious strains that differences over East-West trade policy have put on U.S. relations with its West European allies, the authors conclude that there are tangible limits on the ability of the United States to use technology trade as leverage to alter Soviet policies.

How does the United Nations actually work? How does it reconcile the diverse interests of 191 sovereign member states - plus those of the multinational corporations that lobby it, the numerous NGOs with which it interacts, and the enormous international secretariat that services it - in the search for effective solutions to the myriad problems it confronts daily? Politics and Process at the United Nations answers these questions, providing a vivid picture of the dynamic interaction between actors and institutional structures. Drawing readers into the ""global dance"" that takes place at UN headquarters, Courtney Smith introduces the various members of the troupe and explains the procedures and processes that make up the movements of the dance. He also addresses an often neglected core issue: do UN decisions really matter? The result is an unusual book, valuable both for scholars and for students in UN and IO courses.

Global Pathways to Abolishing Physical Punishment - Realizing Children's Rights (Paperback): Joan E. Durrant, Anne B. Smith Global Pathways to Abolishing Physical Punishment - Realizing Children's Rights (Paperback)
Joan E. Durrant, Anne B. Smith
R1,671 Discovery Miles 16 710 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book describes the unfolding of a global phenomenon: the legal prohibition of physical punishment of children. Until thirty years ago, this near-universal practice was considered appropriate, necessary and a parental right. But a paradigm shift in conceptions of childhood has led to a global movement to redefine it as violence and as a violation of children's rights. Today, many countries have prohibited it in all settings, including the home. This remarkable shift reflects profound cultural changes in thinking about children and their development, parent-child relationships, and the role of the state in family life. It has involved actors in many sectors, including academia, government, non-governmental organizations and children themselves. Documenting the stories of countries that have either prohibited corporal punishment of children or who are moving in that direction, this volume will serve as a sourcebook for scholars and advocates around the world who are interested in the many dimensions of physical punishment and its elimination.
