The Lex Aquila is difficult to interpret, and it has inspired a great deal of contemporary and later commentary. Thayer's bilingual edition presents the text with a summary of commentary (in English) by scholars from the Medieval era through the 1920s. The second part contains the Latin text of De Donationibus with extensive notes (in English) by Thayer.James Bradley Thayer [1831-1902] practiced law in Boston from 1856 until 1874.He was the Royall Professor of Law, Harvard Law School, 1874-1883, and WeldProfessor of Law, 1883-1902.CONTENTSAD LEGEM AQUILIAM (IX, 2)TEXT AND TRANSLATIONCOMMENTARYDE DONATIONIBUS INTER VIRUM ET UXOREM (XXIV, I)TEXT AND COMMENTARY

John James Marshall (September 24, 1755 - July 6, 1835) was the fourth Chief Justice of the United States (1801-1835) whose court opinions helped lay the basis for American constitutional law and made the Supreme Court of the United States a coequal branch of government along with the legislative and executive branches. Previously, Marshall had been a leader of the Federalist Party in Virginia and served in the United States House of Representatives from 1799 to 1800. He was Secretary of State under President John Adams from 1800 to 1801.
