In 1783, Todd and Sarah, meet in the wilderness of the Smoky Mountains. Todd, an honored graduate of a military academy, is accused of the attempted murder of British Loyalist, Lord Wellington Howe's son, and the young couple is forced to flee with a posse close behind. Meanwhile, thugs search for sixteen-year-old Sarah Tranthem. Days later, Todd, with the help of two dogs, prevents Sarah's rape, and murder. They agree to travel together for protection while Todd searches for a hidden valley-fighting off pursuers-braving the elements in a sparsely populated mountain wilderness. Todd and Sarah homestead the valley, beset by bears, horse thieves, a corrupt sheriff, and gangs still determined to kill them. The labor, hardships, and dangers draw them closer together. Providence intervenes. The pursuers attempt to destroy the young adults for several years until their failed efforts of revenge provoke them to arrange a sham trial to hang Todd's Patriot father-Captain Gilbert Casey. Todd and Sarah leave their valley to make the long and difficult trip through the primitive mountain roads and the Shenandoah Valley to Richmond where Gilbert is to stand trial. The trial begins, rigged by a corrupt judge and false witnesses. It ends with gunshots. Their enemy escapes by taking command of a well-armed ship. In desperation, he challenges an American vessel. Cannon smoke drifts across the sea.
A sailing adventure ends as a pack of dogs wins the war with drug runners while saving their Pack Leader and leading him through the Everglades swamp. While investigating an insurance claim, Bart Casey is marked for death by a drug lord named King. Accompanied by his two dogs, Dutch and Kate, Bart sails his boat, the Pelican, down the Florida coast. King makes several attempts to sink Bart's sailboat and kill Bart and his dogs. Bart is shot and King's boat is damaged. The Pelican drifts into the Everglades, grounding deep in the swamp at an Indian mound. A pack of dogs meets the boat. Meanwhile, King searches for the Pelican intent on disposing of Bart. The dogs intervene. The dogs learn to give Bart food and water, and guide him through the swamps, fighting King and his reinforcements all the way. Buster, a giant black dog, takes charge of the pack with military precision, utilizing snakes, gators, quicksand, and deception as their weapons. While the pack fights for Bart's life, he experiences visions of his life and of a peculiar man with many names. He has only a shadowy knowledge of what is happening in reality beyond the smells of dog breath and peanut butter. "Where is this place," he asks his new friend. "Is, is wherever you are," answers the philosopher.
A research guide for specialists in the Gothic novel, the Romantic movement, the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century novel, and popular culture, this work contains summaries of more than two hundred novels, reputed to be Gothic, published in English between 1790 and 1830. Also included are indexes of titles and characters and an extensive index of characteristic objects, motifs, and themes that recur in the novels -- such as corpses, bloody and otherwise, dungeons, secret passageways, filicide, fratricide, infanticide, matricide, patricide, and suicide. The novels described, including those by such writers as Charlotte Dacre, Louisa Sidney Stanhope, Regina Maria Roche, Charles Maturin, and Mary Shelley, are for the most part out of print and circulation and are unavailable except in rare book rooms. Thus this book provides the researcher with ready access to information that would otherwise be difficult to obtain."
Social security systems throughout the world are faced with unprecedented challenges in response to growing criticisms about unacceptable expenditures for government programs and questions about the appropriate role of government in providing social protection through social insurance and social assistance programs. The challenges are also a result of dramatic demographic, social, and cultural changes around the world. A variety of radical and modest reform measures are currently being discussed which have the potential of significantly impacting the means of income and health care for the elderly, children, and families. This book examines these challenges from the perspective of local analysts in both industrial and economically developing nations. The purpose of the analysis is to promote a better understanding of the integral role that social security plays in the social and economic development of diverse societies. The chapters examine the wide range of challenges to social security in Britain, Egypt and Turkey, the Netherlands, Poland, the United States, Uruguay, and Zimbabwe. An overview of the most prevalent issues are discussed, including fiscal viability, economic development, equity, administration, public confidence, and the role of social security as the primary government instrument for social protection against the loss of income and health. Essential reading for students and researchers in social policy, gerontology, and comparative social welfare.
One measure of public program response to rapidly expanding older populations is the approach to old-age pensions under social insurance, social assistance, and provident fund systems. Social insurance is clearly the preferred method of meeting the income needs of the elderly, but historical, as well as current social and economic conditions are forcing many nations to reevaluate the characteristics of viable and sustainable social insurance programs. This has led to a variety of innovations in old-age pension programs development, including revised benefit formulas, raised retirement ages, increased income testing, and expanded reliance on private occupational supplemental programs. The essays in this new international handbook analyze the impact of the economic, social, and cultural effects of aging populations on government social insurance policies. They offer a perspective on how twenty different countries have approached income maintenance programs for the elderly. Collectively, the contributors demonstrate how governments, non-governmental entities, communities, and families respond to changes in traditional income and social service support systems. They provide not only descriptions of existing programs, but also a better understanding of the factors that gave rise to their distinct characteristics. This important new collection will be required reading for everyone involved in elderly services.
This volume proposes a clearly structured method to study social programs for the elderly in economically developing nations. Martin B. Tracy approaches the problem with a practical rather than academic or purely technical model, formulating specific criteria to measure the applicability of one country's social welfare program to another country's needs. The study opens with an overview of the challenge facing developing countries as their elderly populations increase. Attention then turns to a description of the analytical model itself, and its application to the People's Republic of China, Kerala State in India, Mexico, Nigeria, and Turkey. Each case study answers specific questions, and thereby outlines a program which is a unique response to the particular needs of each region. Concluding with a summary of the major trends found in the studies, the work can serve as a valuable tool for social policy makers in the development of suitable programs and for educators of cross-national policy analysis.
