There has been an upsurge in the English School of international relations in recent years. The English School, embodying traditions of philosophy, law and history, provides a perspective on contemporary international relations theory that allows for a critical reformulation of the concept of international society. It is a formulation that offers an alternative methodology for the study and deeper understanding of the nature of the current emerging transformations in the international system. The volume is a collection of original essays written by major international relations theorists which sets out a critical appreciation of the development of the international society idea and its influence on, and relation to, the development of international relations theory. A critical look is taken at the intellectual development of key members of the School, the concept of the School itself and the place of the School's theory in contemporary international relations approaches. The volume is an original contribution to the study and understanding of international relations theory.

This book goes beyond the media presentation of the impact of Islam in the Middle East to consider the reality that lies behind it. The author considers the West's understanding of of the Islamic revival, the development of Islamic politics and the attempts of some Islamic intellectuals to modernize Islamic society. A feature of much of the recent writing has been a focus on the violent aspects of the Islamic phenomenon. This book presents the opportunity to look beyond these surface issues to the more fundamental and conceptual aspects of the Islamic revival. At the same time, it informs us more realistically about our current world and Islam's role within it.

The end of the Cold War and the creation of the European Union have had profound effects on Europe's relationship with the Middle East. This study explores Europe's relationship with the region, from its colonial legacies to an uncertain economic future. Bringing together commentators on the two regions, the papers explore many issues which have informed Europe's relationship with the Middle East. Coverage includes: the Cold War and after; the profound influence of the US; the rise of political Islam; and case studies including Europe and the Iranian revolution, France's experiences in Algeria, and Turkey's position between the two regions. The study finds that although Europe is still severely limited in influencing security, it has been increasingly influential throughout the region through its economic strategies. These strategies have in turn promoted stability in the form of free trade zones, ensuring vital economic development between the Middle East and Europe.
