This is the first of two volumes entitled Determination of Chemical Composition and Molecular Structure. The ordering offers more consistent volumes for those interested in certain types of chemical determinations as opposed to the grouping of similar techniques used for a variety of measurements. Chapters have been written by world-class authors who are widely recognized in their fields. Authors have directed their writings to the competent, professional scientist who is interested in obtaining information provided by the technique, but who is perhaps not an expert in the use of the method. In each case, authors of chapters have supplied, either in the text or through liberal reference to monographs and other scientific literature, sufficient information for the investigator to apply the techniques successfully in the laboratory.
While determination of elastic and mechanical properties has always been important to some industrial laboratories, the significance of these measurements has increased tremendously in recent years for both academic and industrial scientists and engineers. This is as a result of new advance materials research and automated manufacturing and processing methods. "Physical Methods of Chemistry" has been written by researchers who have broad practical laboratory experience in the application of their respective techniques. The chapters provide, either directly or through clearly designated references, information that is essential to the use of these techniques in the laboratory.
Each volume of this series heralds profound changes in both the perception and practice of chemistry. This edition presents the state of the art of all important methods of instrumental chemical analysis, measurement and control. Contributions offer introductions together with sufficient detail to give a clear understanding of basic theory and apparatus involved and an appreciation of the value, potential and limitations of the respective techniques. The emphasis of the subjects treated is on method rather than results, thus aiding the investigator in applying the techniques successfully in the laboratory.

Mass and Density Determinations (R. Davis & W. Koch). Pressure and Vacuum Measurements (C. Tilford). Experimental Methods for Studying Diffusion in Gases, Liquids, and Solids (P. Dunlop, et al.). Determination of Solubility (D. Wyatt & L. Grady). Viscosity and Its Measurements (J. Greener). Temperature Measurement with Application to Phase Equilibria Studies (J. Ott & J. Goates). Calorimetry (J. Oscarson & R. Izatt). Differential Thermal Methods (J. Boerio-Goates & J. Callanan). Index.
The series "Physical Methods of Chemistry" covers a broad range of techniques, allowing investigators to choose a method for the determination of structure or composition appropriate to their needs: samples, environments, conditions etc. This particular volume covers chiroptical spectroscopy, dipole moments, static magnetic techniques, ESR, NMR in liquids, GC, HPLC, size-exclusion chromatography, and field-flow fractionation. The text will benefit analytical, physical, organic, inorganic, biological and medicinal chemists, chemical and process control engineers, surface scientists, quality control, environmental scientists and engineers, chemical physicists, and materials scientists.
