This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Conference on Systems Modelling and Management, ICSMM 2020, planned to be held in Bergen, Norway, in June 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the conference did not take place physically or virtually. The 10 full papers and 3 short papers were thoroughly reviewed and selected from 19 qualified submissions. Model Management and Analytics for Large Scale Systems covers the use of models and related artefacts (such as metamodels and model transformations) as central elements for tackling the complexity of building systems and managing data. With their increased use across diverse settings, the complexity, size, multiplicity and variety of those artefacts has increased. Originally developed for software engineering, these approaches can now be used to simplify the analytics of large-scale models and automate complex data analysis processes. A lost inheritance, a rags-to-riches journey from vagabondage in the mountains of central Asia to an imperial throne in India, warrior-poet Babur's life was one of adventure and endurance against the odds. Descended from both Genghis Khan and Timur, Babur came to the throne of a small principality at the age of eleven; ten years of warfare later, he would lose it for ever to Uzbek invaders. A lucky break led to the capture of Kabul, from which he carved out a new state for himself in Afghanistan. Just over twenty years later, he was ready for the biggest throw of all - no less than an invasion of India. He recorded his own story pretty much as it happened with startling immediacy and a winning frankness: it was the crowning achievement of a rich tradition of Islamic autobiography. There is history and politics here aplenty, but what is most striking about Babur's memoirs is the man they reveal - ambitious but modest and self-critical, deeply attached to friends and family, homesick amongst the treasures of India, sensitive to the beauties of nature and extremely fond of a party. He paints a fascinating portrait of a sophisticated and cultured Persian-Turkic society. As violent for political ends as many a European Renaissance ruler, Babur could order a massacre and return home to write a ghazal. Everywhere he went he created beautiful gardens. There are insights into the role of women in such a society; of Babur's several wives, but particularly the older women of his family, who commanded respect and exercised considerable influence. Four years after his Indian conquest, Babur swore to give his own life if his eldest son recovered from a dangerous illness. Humayun pulled through, and in a few months Babur was dead. But he had laid the foundations of the greatest, wealthiest and most populous of the world's Muslim-ruled empires.

Mr. Jalallar's autobiography gives us a unique insight into Afghanistan's sociopolitical situation and the changes it went through over the last half century, particularly during the last thirty or so years. Having served his country under three different regimes, his view is unique in that he not only witnessed the changes that swept the country during that time but his accounts help us see those changes from an entirely different perspective. With the current turmoil plaguing the country and the pictures we see in the media the autobiography is a breath of fresh air that takes us back to a time when the country's leaders were forward thinking, and focused on the country's advancement into modernity rather than holding on to backwardness. He sheds light on how his country, being poor and destitute, struggled toward modernization by seeking financial aide from the West on one side and from the USSR on the other. It is a fascinating account that shows how the country's fragile socioeconomic and political situation on the one hand and its geographic location, being a neighbor to the USSR, on the other put the country in a compromising position. It is an eye opening account of how the country's leadership struggled toward modernization and yet was unable to balance their relationship to the dichotomy of push and pull by the West from the one side and the USSR from the other. The account also sheds light on how the USSR took advantage of this fragility and invaded the country, leaving behind decades of war, destruction, and upheaval that is still yet to settle. In short Mr. Jalallar's autobiography is a fascinating account of his life experiences as a public servant to a country during a time when it was looking forward to modernization and development. By reading the account one gets a sense that the leadership may have tried too hard too fast to bring on those changes leading to some not too smart decisions that instead led the country toward destruction rather than the intended development. In any event, the reader will find the work and the person as extraordinary simply because while the country was going through changes that were of enormous proportions, it chose to at least keep one pillar in place. That pillar was Mr. Jalallar in his leadership position as the country's economic face to the world.
