Sexual Justice / Cultural Justice - Critical Perspectives in Political Theory and Practice (Paperback): Barbara Arneil, Monique... Sexual Justice / Cultural Justice - Critical Perspectives in Political Theory and Practice (Paperback)
Barbara Arneil, Monique Deveaux, Rita Dhamoon, Avigail Eisenberg
R1,360 Discovery Miles 13 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This key volume explores the relationship between cultural justice and sexual justice in multicultural societies in a new light. The authors challenge the framing of 'feminism and multiculturalism' as one of inevitable conflict, as well as the portrayal of liberal sexual equality and cultural rights as irreconcilable, moving the debate beyond the culture/gender impasse.

Focusing on three theoretical themes from a feminist perspective:

  • the meaning and role of culture and identity in politics
  • the problem of autonomy in relation to culture and identity
  • the crucial role of democracy in addressing the theoretical and practical problems raised by this set of issues.

The diverse contributors break new theoretical ground by providing detailed engagement with the concrete experiences of women and minorities who are caught in the dilemmas of gender and cultural justice. The collected chapters address sexual/cultural justice in a range of different countries, offering illuminating case studies on Britain, South Africa, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, Mexico, and the United States.

Sexual Justice / Cultural Justice will be of strong interest to students and researchers working in the areas of gender and feminist theory, politics, law, philosophy and sociology.

Diverse Communities - The Problem with Social Capital (Hardcover): Barbara Arneil Diverse Communities - The Problem with Social Capital (Hardcover)
Barbara Arneil
R2,469 Discovery Miles 24 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Diverse Communities is a critique of Robert Putnam's social capital thesis, re-examined from the perspective of women and cultural minorities in America over the last century. Barbara Arneil argues that the idyllic communities of the past were less positive than Putnam envisions and that the current 'collapse' in participation is better understood as change rather than decline. Arneil suggests that the changes in American civil society in the last half century are not so much the result of generational change or television as the unleashing of powerful economic, social and cultural forces that, despite leading to division and distrust within American society, also contributed to greater justice for women and cultural minorities. She concludes by proposing that the lessons learned from this fuller history of American civil society provide the normative foundation to enumerate the principles of justice by which diverse communities might be governed in the twenty-first century.

Disability and Political Theory (Hardcover): Barbara Arneil, Nancy J. Hirschmann Disability and Political Theory (Hardcover)
Barbara Arneil, Nancy J. Hirschmann
R2,777 Discovery Miles 27 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Though disability scholarship has been robust in history, philosophy, English, and sociology for decades, political theory and political science more generally have been slow to catch up. This groundbreaking volume presents the first full-length book on political theory approaches to disability issues. Barbara Arneil and Nancy J. Hirschmann bring together some of the leading scholars in political theory to provide a historical analysis of disability through the works of canonical figures, ranging from Hobbes and Locke to Kant, Rawls and Arendt, as well as an analysis of disability in contemporary political theory, examining key concepts, such as freedom, power and justice. Disability and Political Theory introduces a new disciplinary framework to disability studies, and provides a comprehensive introduction to a new topic of political theory.

Domestic Colonies - The Turn Inward to Colony (Hardcover): Barbara Arneil Domestic Colonies - The Turn Inward to Colony (Hardcover)
Barbara Arneil
R2,865 Discovery Miles 28 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Modern colonization is generally defined as a process by which a state settles and dominates a foreign land and people. This book argues that through the nineteenth and into the first half of the twentieth centuries, thousands of domestic colonies were proposed and/or created by governments and civil society organizations for fellow citizens as opposed to foreigners and within their own borders rather than overseas. Such colonies sought to solve every social problem arising within industrializing and urbanizing states. Domestic Colonies argues that colonization ought to be seen during this period as a domestic policy designed to solve social problems at home as well as foreign policy designed to expand imperial power. Three kind of domestic colonies are analysed in this book: labour colonies for the idle poor, farm colonies for the mentally ill and disabled, and utopian colonies for racial, religious, and political minorities. All of them were justified by an ideology of colonialism that argued if people were segregated in colonies located on empty land and engaged in agrarian labour, this would improve both the people and the land. Key domestic colonialists analysed in this book include Alexis de Tocqueville, Abraham Lincoln, Peter Kropotkin, Robert Owen, and Booker T. Washington. The turn inward to colony thus requires us to rethink the meaning and scope of colonization and colonialism in modern political theory and practice.
