The town of Wheatland lies along the west bank of the Genesee River in the southwest corner of Monroe County. In 1786, the adventurous frontiersman Ebenezer aIndiana Allan built a log cabin near the river. The Allan family soon moved on, but the settlement of the entire area west of the Genesee River had begun. The name given to the town in 1821 recognized the successful wheat crops already yielded by its fertile soil. Oatka Creek, which winds its way across town to the river, once powered flour and plaster mills that made the villages and hamlets of Wheatland thriving communities. Today Wheatland remains a rural area known for its picturesque countryside and its recreational opportunities.

OpenMP is an application programming interface (API) that is widely accepted as a de facto standard for high-level shared-memory parallel programming. It is a portable, scalable programming model that provides a simple and ?exible interface for developing shared-memory parallel applications in Fortran, C, and C++. Since its introduction in 1997, OpenMP has gained support from the - jority of high-performance compiler and hardware vendors. Under the direction of the OpenMP Architecture Review Board (ARB), the OpenMP speci?cation is undergoing further improvement. Active research in OpenMP compilers, r- time systems, tools, and environments continues to drive OpenMP evolution. To provideaforumforthedisseminationandexchangeofinformationaboutand- periences with OpenMP, the community of OpenMP researchersand developers in academia and industry is organized under cOMPunity (www.compunity.org). This organization has held workshops on OpenMP since 1999. This book contains the proceedings of the 5th International Workshop on OpenMP held in Dresden in June 2009. With sessions on tools, benchmarks, applications, performance and runtime environments it covered all aspects of the current use of OpenMP. In addition, several contributions presented p- posed extensions to OpenMP and evaluated reference implementations of those extensions. An invited talk provided the details on the latest speci?cation dev- opment inside the Architecture Review Board. Together with the two keynotes about OpenMP on hardware accelerators and future generation processors it demonstrated that OpenMP is suitable for future generation systems.

The Third International Workshop on OpenMP, IWOMP 2007, was held at Beijing, China. This year'sworkshopcontinuedits traditionofbeingthe premier opportunity to learn more about OpenMP, to obtain practical experience and to interact with OpenMP users and developers. The workshop also served as a forum for presenting insights gained by practical experience, as well as research ideas and results related to OpenMP. A total of 28 submissions were received in response to a call for papers. Each submissionwasevaluatedbythreereviewersandadditionalreviewswerereceived for some papers. Based on the feedback received, 22 papers were accepted for inclusion in the proceedings. Of the 22 papers, 14 were accepted as full papers. We also accepted eight short papers, for each of which there was an opportunity to givea shortpresentationat the workshop, followed byposter demonstrations. Each paper was judged according to its originality, innovation, readability, and relevance to the expected audience. Due to the limited scope and time of the workshop and the high number of submissions received, only 50% of the total submissions were able to be included in the ?nal program. In addition to the contributed papers, the IWOMP 2007 program featured several keynote and banquet speakers: Trevor Mudge, Randy Brown, and Shah, Sanjiv. These speakers were selected due to their signi?cant contributions and reputation in the ?eld. A tutorial session and labs were also associated with IWOMP 2007.

OpenMP is an application programming interface (API) that is widely accepted as a standard for high-level shared-memory parallel programming. It is a portable, scalable programming model that provides a simple and ?exible interface for - veloping shared-memory parallel applications in Fortran, C, and C++. Since its introduction in 1997, OpenMP has gained support from the majority of high-performance compiler and hardware vendors. Under the direction of the OpenMP Architecture Review Board (ARB), the OpenMP standard is being further improved. Active research in OpenMP compilers, runtime systems, tools, and environments continues to drive its evolution. To provide a forum for the d- semination and exchange of information about and experiences with OpenMP, the community of OpenMP researchers and developers in academia and industry is organized under cOMPunity (www. compunity. org). Workshops on OpenMP have taken place at a variety of venues around the world since 1999: the European Workshop on OpenMP (EWOMP), the North American Workshop on OpenMP Applications and Tools (WOMPAT), and the AsianWorkshoponOpenMP Experiences andImplementation (WOMPEI)were each held annually and attracted an audience from both academia and industry. The intended purpose of the new International Workshop on OpenMP (IWOMP) was to consolidate these three OpenMP workshops into a single, yearly inter- tional conference. The ?rst IWOMP meeting was held during June 1-4, 2005, in Eugene, Oregon, USA. The second meeting took place during June 12-15, in Reims, France.

Marie or, Slavery in the United States - A Novel of Jacksonian America (Paperback, New Ed): Gustave de Beaumont Marie or, Slavery in the United States - A Novel of Jacksonian America (Paperback, New Ed)
Gustave de Beaumont; Translated by Barbara Chapman; Introduction by Gerard Fergerson
R978 Discovery Miles 9 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Beaumont's "chef-d'oeuvre" was, and has remained, illuminating... It follows that to readers of the present work the book of 1835 will seem strangely and wonderfully familiar... "Marie" will be a book of echoes." -- George Wilson Pierson, "Tocqueville in America"

Gustave de Beaumont's 1835 work, "Marie, or Slavery in the United States" is structured as a fascinating essay on race interwoven with a novel. It is the story of socially forbidden love between an idealistic young Frenchman and an apparently white American woman with African ancestry. The couple's idealism fades as they repeatedly face racial prejudice and violence, and are eventually forced to seek shelter among exiled Cherokee people. Notable as the first abolitionist novel to focus on racial prejudice rather than bondage as a social evil, Beaumont's work was also the first to link prejudice against Native Americans to prejudice against blacks. This translation, with a new introduction by Gerard Fergerson, provides modern readers with interesting insights into the inconsistencies and injustices of democratic Jacksonian society.

" "Marie" issued a warning message to both worlds, old and new, on the devastating character of mob law. In his characteristically sympathetic yet somber tones Beaumont deftly prophesied, more than a century ago, both the racial persecution and the potential tyranny of the majority which continue to haunt us." -- Alvis L. Tinnin, from the 1958 introduction

"It is not only his tragically prophetic analysis of this problem that distinguishes Beaumont's book... It is his passionate sympathy with the victims of prejudice and of human, as distinct from legal, injustice. Like Tocqueville, Beaumontdiagnoses, but he does not stop there... "Marie" is the work of a moralist as well as of a student of customs and manners." -- Lionel Gossman, "Modern Language Notes"
