Medford, Massachusetts, has been a part of Massachusetts history
since the 1630s when Governor John Winthrop travelled here, and
named a rock in the Middlesex fells after the cheese in his lunch.
In the span from that seventeenth century afternoon to the
twenty-first, a lot has happened here. Many of the sites and
structures from Medford's early centuries remain, while many others
have vanished, and are remembered only in stories and vintage
images. In the pages of this book, you will see a mix of Medford's
centuries as you journey through the past and present of this ever
changing city. From John Winthrop's lunch to the present day,
Medford has grown and changed and reinvented itself over and over.
It has always been a unique place and it has never been boring. As
you read this book we hope you laugh and remember and learn, but
most of all we hope you enjoy your journey through history,
commerce, and fun that has created this one and only place.
The Man Who Has Thirty-Four Cats is a children's story for adults,
too, illustrated with 21 original watercolors by the author. The
story features cats' names and explains how and why someone could
keep such a large clutter of cats healthy and happy. The reader
also has an opportunity to name some cats. This 2nd edition is
supplemented with an additional eight watercolors which were
created to augment a solo exhibit of the framed pages from the book
at the Pride Gallery in Lawton, Oklahoma (October, 2012 - January
2013). Why would anyone have thirty-four cats? One cat is perfectly
adequate to lower your blood pressure and make you smile or even
laugh out loud. The cats in this story, who have an ideal home,
were inspired by fifty years of feline friendships and a little
imagination. The author's watercolors include portraits of some of
those marvelous creatures as well as some fantasized companions.
Their names are part of the story and many of them have been
changed to protect those guilty of instilling love, admiration and
joy in their serving staff. If you enjoy getting under the cat and
watching the inside of your eyelids you will appreciate why the
author wants to return in her future life as one of her own pets.
