A detailed study of the important silver hoard from Hildesheim, Germany.
This study of embossed silver beakers of the Leuna type is based on the detailed analysis of fourteen examples, found in graves or hoards and, in one instance, in a cult context. These beakers are only found in the northwestern provinces of the Roman empire and the majority probably date to the 3rd century. Barbara Niemeyer discusses the influence of Greek motifs in their decoration, their manufacturing and decoration techniques, the probable location of silver smithing workships in the north-western provinces, and similarities between the fourteen examples. Niemeyer also discusses the function of these ornate drinking cups and the significance of their archaeological provenance. The catalogue is illustrated.
