Enabling Flexibility in Process-Aware Information Systems - Challenges, Methods, Technologies (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Manfred... Enabling Flexibility in Process-Aware Information Systems - Challenges, Methods, Technologies (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Manfred Reichert, Barbara Weber
R1,633 Discovery Miles 16 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In today's dynamic business world, the success of a company increasingly depends on its ability to react to changes in its environment in a quick and flexible way. Companies have therefore identified process agility as a competitive advantage to address business trends like increasing product and service variability or faster time to market, and to ensure business IT alignment. Along this trend, a new generation of information systems has emerged-so-called process-aware information systems (PAIS), like workflow management systems, case handling tools, and service orchestration engines. With this book, Reichert and Weber address these flexibility needs and provide an overview of PAIS with a strong focus on methods and technologies fostering flexibility for all phases of the process lifecycle (i.e., modeling, configuration, execution and evolution). Their presentation is divided into six parts. Part I starts with an introduction of fundamental PAIS concepts and establishes the context of process flexibility in the light of practical scenarios. Part II focuses on flexibility support for pre-specified processes, the currently predominant paradigm in the field of business process management (BPM). Part III details flexibility support for loosely specified processes, which only partially specify the process model at build-time, while decisions regarding the exact specification of certain model parts are deferred to the run-time. Part IV deals with user- and data-driven processes, which aim at a tight integration of processes and data, and hence enable an increased flexibility compared to traditional PAIS. Part V introduces existing technologies and systems for the realization of a flexible PAIS. Finally, Part VI summarizes the main ideas of this book and gives an outlook on advanced flexibility issues. The book's target groups include researchers, PhD students and Master students in the field of information systems. After reading the book, they will better understand PAIS flexibility aspects. To support the easy use as a textbook, a series of exercises is provided at the end of each chapter and slides and further teaching material are available on the book's web site www.flexible-processes.com. Professionals specializing in business process management (BPM) who want to obtain a good understanding of flexibility challenges in BPM and state-of-the-art solutions will also benefit from the presentations of open source as well as commercial process management systems and related practical scenarios.

R1,429 Discovery Miles 14 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book contains the refereed proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Agile Software Development, XP 2013, held in Vienna, Austria, in June 2013.

In the last decade, the interest in agile and lean software development has been continuously growing. Agile and lean have evolved from a way of working -- restricted in the beginning to a few early adopters -- to the mainstream way of developing software. All this time, the XP conference series has actively promoted agility and widely disseminated research results in this area. XP 2013 successfully continued this tradition.

The 17 full papers accepted for XP 2013 were selected from 52 submissions and are organized in sections on: teaching and learning; development teams; agile practices; experiences and lessons learned; large-scale projects; and architecture and design.

Cultural Politics and Identity - The Public Space of Recognition (Paperback): Barbara Weber, Karlfriedrich Herb, Eva Marsal Cultural Politics and Identity - The Public Space of Recognition (Paperback)
Barbara Weber, Karlfriedrich Herb, Eva Marsal
R911 Discovery Miles 9 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Recognizing and respecting cultural and ethnic differences, while, at the same time, guaranteeing the equality of treatment, seems like a paradox. However, it is among the crucial challenges that plural democracies are faced with today. The challenges include multiple problems, such as the struggle for recognition of cultural minorities or the actualization of universal human rights. The contributions to this anthology discuss these issues, with the goal of combining knowledge and opinions from various disciplines and multiple cultures in order to unfold the complexity and variety of questions that have to be solved, so that public spaces can be seen as environments of intercultural recognition. Respect: How Do We Get There? - A Philosophical Inquiry (Paperback): Eva Marsal, Barbara Weber, Susan T. Gardner Respect: How Do We Get There? - A Philosophical Inquiry (Paperback)
Eva Marsal, Barbara Weber, Susan T. Gardner
R648 Discovery Miles 6 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What precisely do we mean by respect? How should we adjudicate between conflicting demands of respect (e.g., respect for self vs. others, respect for humans vs. the environment, etc.)? What obstacles stand in the way of respect? The papers contained in this international anthology were presented at the North American Association of the Community of Inquiry (NAACI) conference in Vancouver, Canada, in June 2012, and were the outcome of in-depth and interdisciplinary discussions around the various aspects of respect. The book is an exacting and exciting analysis of the notion of respect - an analysis that has the potential to have lasting and extensive practical consequences. Walter Omar Kohan, Barbara Weber; Contributions by Adrienne Argent, Iris Berger, Michael A. Bonnett, …
R2,578 Discovery Miles 25 780 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Thinking, Childhood, and Time: Contemporary Perspectives on the Politics of Education is an interdisciplinary exploration of the notion of childhood and its place in a philosophical education. Contributors consider children's experiences of time, space, embodiment, and thinking. By acknowledging Hannah Arendt's notion that every child brings a new beginning into the world, they address the question of how educators can be more responsive to the Otherness that childhood offers, while assuming that most educational models follow either a chronological model of child development or view children as human beings that are lacking. This book explores childhood as a philosophical concept in children, adults, and even beyond human beings-Childhood as a (forgotten) dimension of the world. Contributors also argue that a pedagogy that does not aim for an "exodus of childhood," but rather responds to the arrival of a new human being responsibly (dialogically), fosters a deeper appreciation of the newness that children bring in order to sensitize us for our own Childhood as adults as well and allow us to welcome other forms of childhood in the world. As a whole, this book argues that the experience of natality, such as the beginning of life, is not chronologically determined, but rather can occur more than once in a human life and beyond. Scholars of philosophy, education, psychology, and childhood studies will find this book particularly useful.

Who are we? Who do we want to become? How do we imagine our futures? Located at the intersection of theory and practice, this anthology brings together the voices of scholars, graduate students, and educational practitioners as they explore foundational concepts that inform questions of identity and citizenship and shape the way we think about the future. Concepts - such as narrative, dreams, imagination, and hope - are explored from both a philosophical perspective and from the perspective of young people from Israel and Germany who reflect on their own experiences. The concept of chiasm has played major role in continental philosophy, where it has referred to various phenomenological and hermeneutic structures of reversibility, intertwining, and encounter. In Chiasmatic Encounters: Art, Ethics, Politics, fourteen international contributors representing various fields of expertise analyze this central concept and its significance for contemporary cultural theory. The authors discuss the work of major philosophers like Merleau-Ponty, Beauvoir, Habermas, Levinas, Derrida, and Deleuze, adapting their ideas of chiasmatic relations to cultural analysis. As the internal and external horizons of perception and experience are intertwined and reversed, various cultural texts, like a Vermeer painting, a symphony of Sibelius, a David Lynch movie, or a young girl walking in her summer dress, are seen from new and unexpected angles. The book also addresses the chiasmatic crossing between ethics and politics-- between unconditional ethical responsibility and always conditional political choices. Representing the cutting edge of contemporary cultural theory and interdisciplinary thinking, Chiasmatic Encounters is essential reading for anyone working in continental philosophy, aesthetics, or political theory.
