Where did the caterpillar go?
It seems to have disappeared, but it hasn't. It has turned into
a butterfly! From the time a caterpillar first hatches, it eats so
fast that its skin can't keep up. It sheds its skin several times
as it grows bigger and bigger. Eventually it forms a shell around
itself called a chrysalis. Nothing seems to happen for a long time.
But then one day the chrysalis splits open, and a beautiful
butterfly emerges. What a magical metamorphosis!
After a caterpillar comes to school in a jar, the children are
captivated as it eats, grows, and eventually becomes a beautiful
Painted Lady butterfly. This title features colorful illustrations
from veteran illustrator Bari Weissman and lively text from
National Book Award finalist and Michael L. Printz Honor winner
Deborah Heiligman. Now rebranded with a new cover look, this
NSTA/CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book includes web research
prompts and an activity encouraging kids to identify the different
types of butterflies all around them. Both text and artwork were
vetted for accuracy by Dr. Louis Sorkin, Senior Scientific
Assistant at the American Museum of Natural History. This is a
Level 1 Let's-Read-and-Find-Out, which means the book explores
introductory concepts for children in the primary grades and
supports the Common Core Learning Standards and Next Generation
Science Standards. Let's-Read-and-Find-Out is the winner of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru Science
Books & Films Prize for Outstanding Science Series.
