The basis of Bernstein's sociology of education lays in is his
theorisation of the different approaches to curriculum, pedagogy
and assessment and the implications for pedagogic rights and social
justice. This edited collection presents 15 empirical case studies
and theoretical accounts from 22 international scholars who focus
on the experiences of students and teachers in contexts marked by
economic, social, cultural, linguistic and/or geographic diversity.
Located in systems of education in Australia, France, Germany,
Greece, Portugal, South Africa and the United States, each chapter
contributes to a better understanding of the conditions of a
democratic education across time and place.
An hilarious spoof self-help book from the star of Marion &
Geoff and host of the new hit BBC comedy The Keith Barret Show. 'I
don't feel like I have lost a wife but that I have gained a friend.
I would never have met Geoff if Marion hadn't left me.' 'Marion and
Geoff' was one of the most-loved and most-acclaimed BBC comedies of
recent years. Rob Brydon wrote and starred as cuckolded Welsh
cabbie Keith Barret, recording a hopelessly optimistic video diary
about his life as a divorcee. It was a heartbreaking show, darkly
comic and brilliantly written. The series won Best Drama at the
South Bank Awards, and Rob Brydon won a British Comedy Award for
his performance as Keith. In summer 2004 Brydon took his character
Keith Barret to the Edinburgh Festival with a show (or rather a
'talk' or 'therapy session') entitled 'Making Divorce Work', which
drew on all of Keith's experience as a divorcee. It was a sell-out,
and the Daily Telegraph declared it 'More outright hilarious than
the TV series'. Now, after a highly successful series The Keith
Barret Show, Keith Barret has settled down and written an
indispensable self-help guide to surviving relationship break-ups.
In Making Divorce Work, Barret offers advice for the broken-hearted
on everything from getting access to the kids ('my little
smashers') to dating again. It is a brilliant parody of the
self-help genre (although Barret has written it with all
sincerity), and an intimate portrait of Keith Barret; our favourite
eternal optimist.
The authors, writing with the experience and technological
background of Electricite de France, an organisation at the
forefront of simulation methods, provide a comprehensive and
comprehensible treatment of the modelling and simulation techniques
currently in use. The text emphasises model design applied to power
plants producing energy, generators and motors carrying out energy
transformations and networks transmitting energy. The systems are
analysed considering each process, from steady state to fast
transients, with detailed explanation of the problem to be solved,
the choice of models and methods for optimising efficiency. Many
examples and references are provided. The book is essential reading
for anyone involved in power system engineering, from practising
design and development engineers to researchers and postgraduate
and advanced graduate students.
Medicinal Chemistry: Fundaments presents the cycle of the life of
drugs, their physico-chemical properties, and consequences that
arise in development. The fundamental concepts of Medicinal
Chemistry (pharmacophore, prodrugs, Lipinsky rules) are also
presented, including discussions on specific concerns of the
European Pharmacopeia - the industrialist's bible - its role, and a
description of the monographs of active principles.

This book presents an exhaustive overview of the theoretical
foundations and practical applications of biocontrol in
agriculture. It encompasses all kinds of nature-based approaches
for crop protection: introduction and conservation of natural
enemies, release of sterile insects, enhancement of plant defenses,
use of microorganisms, biopesticides, and semiochemicals.
Cutting-edge knowledge in population biology, microbial ecology,
epidemiology and chemical ecology is presented in accessible terms.
The potential of field application is discussed with regard to
practical aspects but also socioeconomic constraints. The 62
authors are researchers from a large panel of disciplines, from
theoretical biology to social sciences. Â

Focal therapy is a promising option for selected patients who have
localized low or intermediate-risk prostate cancer, providing a
compelling alternative between active surveillance and radical
therapies by targeting the index lesion and preserving as much
tissue as possible. Numerous cohort studies have already
investigated multiple focal techniques, such as cryotherapy,
high-intensity focused ultrasound, brachytherapy, photodynamic
therapy, laser therapy, irreversible electroporation and cyberknife
methods, all of which have demonstrated positive oncological
outcomes with 70 to 90 % negative follow-up biopsy. These various
ablative techniques have produced only minor side-effects
concerning urinary function, a low rate of erectile dysfunction,
and have demonstrated a limited rectal toxicity. As a result, the
primary end-point has now shifted and a new strategy needs to be
established for patient follow-up and for defining treatment
failure. Written by international experts in the field, this book
is mainly focused on new techniques, all of which are amply
illustrated. Technical Aspects of Focal Therapy in Localized
Prostate Cancer will be of great practical value to all urologists
and oncologists.
'Vice and wretchedness exist in their most appalling and hideous
forms, stalking about with bold front, unblushingly, as though vice
were virtue.' For the middle-class moralists and reformers of
Victorian London, poverty was synonymous with depravity: their
descriptions of the urban working classes portray a swarming,
undifferentiated mass, impoverished and immoral. In the absence of
written accounts by the poor themselves, these nineteenth-century
prejudices still cloud our understanding of popular attitudes to
sensuality and courtship, marriage and pregnancy. Love in the Time
of Victoria overturns these prejudices by presenting and analyzing
an extraordinary range of hitherto unpublished first-hand
documents: love letters and testimonies from working-class women
who faced pregnancy alone, and from their suitors, relatives and
employers. These unique and moving writings provide the fullest and
most accurate picture to date of love and sex among the poor in
Victorian London. Francoise Barret-Ducrocq has painstakingly
uncovered autobiographical fragments which show women and men who
are neither depraved nor unusually virtuous. They meet in the
course of their work, in the streets or through family and friends;
they seek romance in parks and pubs, servants' attics or rented
rooms. The women's own records of their relationships resonate with
all the singularities of desire, passion and regret, and they
reveal a wide range of responses to separation or abandonment. For,
despite their limited options, these women continued to exercise
real choice. Their words vividly bring to life the material and
emotional conflicts of the poor in nineteenth-century London. This
remarkable book restores dignity and individuality to its subjects,
but never idealizes them. The stories here contain cynicism and
tenderness, cruelty and generosity. As the author says, this is
history amazingly like real life.
Binary gendered leadership definitions are threatening to leaders
whose styles do not match these narrow understandings, and do not
leave room for trans, non-binary, and intersex leaders who do not
fit within this binary that does not predict leadership styles.
Through 34 interviews with women and men serving as presidents,
deans, and provosts at some of the United States' top colleges and
universities, this book explores what degendered leadership looks
like in an academic setting.Higher educational settings have seen
more women in leadership roles than in corporate and governmental
settings, making this a prime setting for the study of the
intersection of gender and leadership. Through interview analysis,
the author addresses the following questions: What role does gender
play in the narratives of women and men leaders? How might leaders'
gendering of leadership reproduce gender stereotypes? What
strategies might leaders and institutions of higher education use
to degender leadership? and What might degendered leadership look
like? This timely and important book creates a path for inspired,
talented, and qualified leadership that is not reduced to gender
norms and stereotypes. Institutions that wish to see leadership
diversity and that strive toward creating inclusive academic
communities need to pay attention to leadership expectations
associated with stereotypes that encompass all identities including
race, sexuality, ethnicity, age, and religion. This book is a tool
for promoting leadership diversity.
