Barrett's book consists of a complete revision of the four
chapters, of the Didsbury Lectures, given at the British Isles
Nazarene College, Manchester. The chapter titles indicate the
content: From Jesus to the Church; Ministry; Sacraments; and The
Developing Community. Barrett properly points out that "the church
is at the same time central and peripheral." Likewise, the church
is provisional, temporary, penultimate-an interim solution for the
time between the resurrection/ ascension of Jesus and the heaven of
the church. He also correctly notes the possibility and danger of
an ecclesiological as well as christological Apollinarianism.
Consequently, he emphasizes the human nature of Christ and human
dimensions of the church.
The Shape of Thought: How Mental Adaptations Evolve presents a road
map for an evolutionary psychology of the twenty-first century. It
brings together theory from biology and cognitive science to show
how the brain can be composed of specialized adaptations, and yet
also an organ of plasticity. Although mental adaptations have
typically been seen as monolithic, hard-wired components frozen in
the evolutionary past, The Shape of Thought presents a new view of
mental adaptations as diverse and variable, with distinct functions
and evolutionary histories that shape how they develop, what
information they use, and what they do with that information. The
book describes how advances in evolutionary developmental biology
can be applied to the brain by focusing on the design of the
developmental systems that build it. Crucially, developmental
systems can be plastic, designed by the process of natural
selection to build adaptive phenotypes using the rich information
available in our social and physical environments. This approach
bridges the long-standing divide between "nativist" approaches to
development, based on innateness, and "empiricist" approaches,
based on learning. It shows how a view of humans as a flexible,
culturally-dependent species is compatible with a complexly
specialized brain, and how the nature of our flexibility can be
better understood by confronting the evolved design of the organ on
which that flexibility depends.

Steve Pink directs this romantic comedy, based on David Marmet's
play 'Sexual Perversity in Chicago', starring Kevin Hart, Michael
Ealy, Regina Hall and Joy Bryant. Bernie Jackson (Hart) and his
friend Danny Martin (Ealy) consider themselves successful
womanisers. However, when they become involved with two roommates,
Joan Derrickson (Hall) and Debbie Sullivan (Bryant), Bernie and
Danny find that life becomes a lot more complicated. The two
couples go through numerous ups and downs, with the difficulties
and successes of each relationship having a knock-on effect on the
other. Can romance and friendship survive such close proximity?
If food dropped like rain from the sky, wouldn't it be marvelous! Or would it? It could, after all, be messy. And you'd have no choice. What if you didn't like what fell? Or what if too much came? Have you ever thought of what it might be like to be squashed flat by a pancake?
This book examines gendered language use in six gay male
subcultures: drag queens, radical faeries, bears, circuit boys,
barebackers, and leathermen. Within each subculture, unique
patterns of language use challenge normative assumptions about
gender and sexual identity. Rusty Barrett's analyses of these
subcultures emphasize the ways in which gay male constructions of
gender are intimately linked to other forms of social difference.
In From Drag Queens to Leathermen, Barrett presents an extension of
his earlier work among African American drag queens in the 1990s,
emphasizing the intersections of race and class in the construction
of gender. An analysis of sacred music among radical faeries
considers the ways in which expressions of gender are embedded in a
broader neo-pagan religious identity. The formation of bear as an
identity category (for heavyset and hairy men) in the late 1980s
involves the appropriation of linguistic stereotypes of rural
Southern masculinity. Among regular attendees of circuit parties,
language serves to differentiate gay and straight forms of
masculinity. In the early 2000s, barebackers (gay men who eschew
condoms) used language to position themselves as rational risk
takers with an innate desire for semen. For participants in the
International Mr. Leather contest, a disciplined, militaristic
masculinity links expressions of patriotism with BDSM sexual
practice. In all of these groups, the construction of gendered
identity involves combining linguistic forms that would usually not
co-occur. These unexpected combinations serve as the foundation for
the emergence of unique subcultural expressions of gay male
identity, explicated at length in this book.
Paul Tanter directs this British crime sequel in which a reformed
football hooligan who has testified against powerful London
gangsters finds his safety under threat. Mike Jacobs (Nick Nevern)
was never entirely comfortable with the company he kept in London
and now lives in Spain, safeguarded by the Witness Protection
Programme after his evidence put several of his former associates
behind bars. However, Mike's fatal weakness is his passion for the
England football team and his problems begin when he is spotted
attending a game. Soon his life is turned upside down as those he
betrayed seek revenge through the kidnapping of his friend Katie
(Rita Ramnani). With less than a week to gather the two million
pound ransom required to save her, Mike's quest will take him back
to London and into grave danger.
