In this deeply heartfelt story about what it takes to build a new life, the death of her abuela brings a young woman home, where she must face the past in order to move forward and build a life that’s truly her own. Ten years after she immigrated to the States, twenty-eight-year-old Vi goes home to Barranquilla, Colombia, at the news of her grandmother’s death. Abuela was the one who insisted Vi leave in the first place, but now Vi learns she’s inherited Caminito, their failing family restaurant. Vi can’t understand Abuela’s intentions, but she resolves to honor those final wishes and stay—long enough, at least, to save Caminito. Her life in New York with a serious boyfriend and bourgeoning career is stable enough to wait for her return. But the longer Vi is home, the more she struggles with what that word means. Abuela’s ghost is never far, reminding her of the choices she’s made and the ones that lie ahead. As she reconnects with her family, community, and her first love, Vi will have to decide if she truly did leave for her own good all those years ago…and whether this time she should stay.

Resistance to Globalization - Political Struggle and Cultural Resilience in the Middle East, Russia and Latin America... Resistance to Globalization - Political Struggle and Cultural Resilience in the Middle East, Russia and Latin America (Paperback)
Harald Barrios, Martine Beck, Andreas Boeckh, Klaus Segbers
R625 Discovery Miles 6 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume is an important contribution to the empirical research on what globalization means in different world regions. "Resistance" here has a double meaning: - Active, intentional resistance to tendencies which are rejected on political or moral grounds by presenting alternative discourses and concepts founded in specific cultural and national traditions. - Resilience with regard to globalization pressures in the sense that traditional patterns of development and politics are resistant to change and transform the impulses originating from globalization processes in a way that their results are very different when compared across regions and are not conducive to globalization. The book points out the possibility that the local, sub-national, national, and regional patterns of politics and development will coexist with globalized structures for quite a while without yielding very much ground and in ways which may turn out to be a serious barrier to further globalization. Case studies presented focus on Venezuela (A. Boeckh), Brazil (J. Faust), the Middle East (M. Beck, S. Hegasy), Iran (H. Furtig), and Russia (A. S. Makarychev, A. Shastitko, N. Zubarevich).

Tagalog Stories for Language Learners - Folktales and Stories in Filipino and English (Free Online Audio) (Paperback): Barrios Tagalog Stories for Language Learners - Folktales and Stories in Filipino and English (Free Online Audio) (Paperback)
Barrios
R374 Discovery Miles 3 740 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The most enjoyable way to learn about an unfamiliar culture is through its stories--especially when they're told in two languages! This book introduces 40 stories from the Philippines through bilingual Tagalog and English texts presented on facing pages. Paired with cultural notes, vocabulary lists, exercises, comprehension questions and free online audio recordings, Tagalog Stories for Language Learners is an excellent resource for intermediate language learners. This compilation includes a mix of traditional folktales retold for a modern audience, as well as several well-known works of contemporary Philippine literature. Along the way, you will meet fabulous mythological characters like the Bagobo goddess Mebuyan and the shape-shifting Aswang. Other characters cope with day-to-day issues, such as the domestic worker who cannot find her keys and a beauty queen who leaves behind her comfortable city life in order to help peasants in the countryside. Four of the stories are by well-known Filipino writers and are presented in complete or partially condensed form. These include: Estrangheritis by Inigo Ed. Regalado (1907)--The writer is critical of Filipinos who exalt all things foreign while, in fact, benefitting from their own land but unappreciative of their national culture. Desire by Paz Latorena (1928)--The story of a Filipino woman who has to deal with the narrow-mindedness of a foreigner who is far more interested in her body than in her personality. Greta Garbo by Deogracia Rosaro (1930)--Monina, who looks like Greta Garbo, plans a weekend getaway with her beau, only to be left at the station waiting, and later discovers he has gone on a honeymoon! Maria Elena Paterno's Sampaguita (1991)--Two popular legends about the Sampaguita (Philippine jasmine flower) which touch on the themes of courage and forbidden love. Stories from different periods are presented so learners get a feel for authentic Filipino texts.

Pathogen removal in aerobic granular sludge treatment systems (Paperback): Mary Luz Barrios Hernandez Pathogen removal in aerobic granular sludge treatment systems (Paperback)
Mary Luz Barrios Hernandez
R2,148 Discovery Miles 21 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book describes pathogen removal processes in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) wastewater treatment systems. Faecal indicators (E. coli, Enterococci, coliforms and bacteriophages) were tracked in full-scale AGS facilities and compared to parallel activated sludge (CAS) systems. AGS showed similar removals as the more complex CAS configurations. Removal mechanisms investigated in laboratory-scale reactors showed that the AGS morphology contributes to the removal processes. By tracking E. coli and MS2, it was observed that organisms not attached to the granules are predated by protozoa during aeration. 18S RNA gene analyses confirmed the occurrence of bacterivorous organisms (e.g., Epistylis, Vorticella, Rhogostoma) in the system. Particulate material in the feeding stimulated their development, and a protozoa bloom arose when co-treating with (synthetic) faecal sludge (4 % v/v). An overview of the diverse eukaryotic community in laboratory reactors and real-life applications is also provided. The microbial diversity of the influent was different compared to AGS and CAS sludge samples. However, no clear differences were found between them on species level. This study contributes to a better understanding of the mechanisms behind pathogen removals in AGS systems.

Predicting Vehicle Trajectory (Paperback): Cesar Barrios, Yuichi Motai Predicting Vehicle Trajectory (Paperback)
Cesar Barrios, Yuichi Motai
R1,706 Discovery Miles 17 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book concentrates on improving the prediction of a vehicle’s future trajectory, particularly on non-straight paths. Having an accurate prediction of where a vehicle is heading is crucial for the system to reliably determine possible path intersections of more than one vehicle at the same time. The US DOT will be mandating that all vehicle manufacturers begin implementing V2V and V2I systems, so very soon collision avoidance systems will no longer rely on line of sight sensors, but instead will be able to take into account another vehicle’s spatial movements to determine if the future trajectories of the vehicles will intersect at the same time. Furthermore, the book introduces the reader to some improvements when predicting the future trajectory of a vehicle and presents a novel temporary solution on how to speed up the implementation of such V2V collision avoidance systems. Additionally, it evaluates whether smartphones can be used for trajectory predictions, in an attempt to populate a V2V collision avoidance system faster than a vehicle manufacturer can.

Filipinx American Studies - Reckoning, Reclamation, Transformation (Paperback): Rick Bonus, Antonio Tiongson Filipinx American Studies - Reckoning, Reclamation, Transformation (Paperback)
Rick Bonus, Antonio Tiongson; Contributions by Karin Aguilar-San Juan, Angelica Allen, Gina Apostol, …
R853 Discovery Miles 8 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume spotlights the unique suitability and situatedness of Filipinx American studies both as a site for reckoning with the work of historicizing U.S. empire in all of its entanglements, as well as a location for reclaiming and theorizing the interlocking histories and contemporary trajectories of global capitalism, racism, sexism, and heteronormativity. It encompasses an interrogation of the foundational status of empire in the interdiscipline; modes of labor analysis and other forms of knowledge production; meaning-making in relation to language, identities, time, and space; the critical contours of Filipinx American schooling and political activism; the indispensability of relational thinking in Filipinx American studies; and the disruptive possibilities of Filipinx American formations. A catalogue of key resources and a selected list of scholarship are also provided. Filipinx American Studies constitutes a coming-to-terms with not only the potentials and possibilities but also the disavowals, silences, and omissions that mark Filipinx American studies. It provides a reflective and critical space for thinking through the ways Filipinx American studies is uniquely and especially suited to the interrogation of the ongoing legacies of U.S. imperialism and the urgencies of the current period. West Side Story - The Jets, the Sharks, and the Making of a Classic (Hardcover): Richard Barrios West Side Story - The Jets, the Sharks, and the Making of a Classic (Hardcover)
Richard Barrios
R657 Discovery Miles 6 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A captivating full account of a vital, exciting, and turbulent cultural moment: the making of ground-breaking classic West Side Story (1961).A major hit on Broadway, on film West Side Story became immortal. Unforgettable songs, an urgent love story, audacious choreography in real New York locations: West Side Story was a movie different from anything that had come before, but this cinematic victory came at a price. The film's enormous budget and complicated logistics made it a difficult production, and massive overruns in both cost and schedule led to tension between co-directors Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. The result was Robbins being fired midway through the filming, a termination devastating to the film's star, Natalie Wood, who was also shattered upon discovering that she would not be permitted to do her own singing.Over nearly six decades, West Side Story has endured, past its off-screen dramas, as a classic. What other film makes such intrinsically powerful and brilliant use of dance? How many have been so emotionally meaningful, as set to Leonard Bernstein's music and Stephen Sondheim's lyrics? Plus, given its Shakespearean roots (Romeo and Juliet), how often is any film -- let alone a musical -- so simultaneously timeless and current? Small wonder that the film continues to be a favorite. The production and impact of this classic have been recounted, so far, only in vestiges. As written by film historian Richard Barrios, this book is a captivating account of a crucial and exciting cultural moment. West Side Story was a triumph that appeared to be very much of its time; over the years, and especially in this text, it has shown itself to be eternal.
