The first publication of Ernest Cole’s photographs depicting
Black lives in the United States during the turbulent and eventful
late 1960s and early ’70s After the publication of his landmark
1967 book House of Bondage on the horrors of apartheid,
Ernest Cole moved to New York and received a grant from the Ford
Foundation to document Black communities in cities and rural areas
of the United States. He released very few images from this body of
work while he was alive. Thought to be lost entirely, the negatives
of Cole’s American pictures resurfaced in Sweden in 2017. Ernest
Cole photographed extensively in New York City, documenting the
lively community of Harlem, including a thrilling series of color
photographs, as he turned his talent to street photography across
Manhattan. In 1968 Cole traveled to Chicago, Cleveland, Memphis,
Atlanta, and Los Angeles, as well as rural areas of the South,
capturing the mood of different Black communities in the months
leading up to and just after the assassination of Martin Luther
King Jr. The pictures both reflect a newfound hope and freedom that
Cole felt in America, and an incisive eye for inequality as he
became increasingly disillusioned by the systemic racism he
witnessed. This treasure trove of rediscovered work provides an
important window into American society and redefines Cole’s
oeuvre, presenting a fuller picture of the life and work of a man
who fled South Africa and exposed life under apartheid to the
world.

The recent meeting of the world's white dwarf specialists was held
in Leicester, in July 1992, reporting on the wealth of astronomical
data that has been made available from a new generation of
space-based observatories and recent theoretical advances which are
essential for interpretation of the results. Astronomers now have
access to previously unavailable spectral ranges and dramatically
improved sensitivity in those wavebands already explored. Results
from the ROSAT all-sky survey, Hubble Space Telescope, Hopkins
Ultraviolet Telescope and the Colorado Rocket-borne Spectrometer
shed new light on the composition of white dwarfs and their
evolution. Considerable progress has been made in understanding the
internal structure of white dwarfs with asteroseismological
techniques which are outlined in several papers. New observational
results, which utilize this theoretical work are also presented.
This text is suitable for graduate students and postdoctoral
researchers interested in isolated white dwarfs or binary systems
containing a white dwarf component.
This is volume 4 of Planets, Stars and Stellar Systems, a
six-volume compendium of modern astronomical research, covering
subjects of key interest to the main fields of contemporary
astronomy. This volume on Stellar Structure and Evolution edited by
Martin A. Barstow presents accessible review chapters on Stellar
Structure, Stellar Atmospheres, The Sun as a Star,
Asteroseismology, Star Formation, Young Stellar Objects and
Protostellar Disks, Brown Dwarfs, Evolution of Solar and
Intermediate- Mass Stars, The Evolution of High Mass Stars, Stellar
Activity, White Dwarf Stars, Black Holes and Neutron Stars,
Binaries and Multiple Stellar Systems, Supernovae and Gamma-Ray
Bursts, and Stellar Winds.
All chapters of the handbook were written by practicing
professionals. They include sufficient background material and
references to the current literature to allow readers to learn
enough about a specialty within astronomy, astrophysics and
cosmology to get started on their own practical research projects.
In the spirit of the series Stars and Stellar Systems published by
Chicago University Press in the 1960s and 1970s, each chapter of
Planets, Stars and Stellar Systems can stand on its own as a
fundamental review of its respective sub-discipline, and each
volume can be used as a textbook or recommended reference work for
advanced undergraduate or postgraduate courses. Advanced students
and professional astronomers in their roles as both lecturers and
researchers will welcome Planets, Stars and Stellar Systems as a
comprehensive and pedagogical reference work on astronomy,
astrophysics and cosmology.
The story of Wilf Cotton, a young writer; he gets a short story
broadcast on the radio, and so decides to leave his home in a
mining village to work in a city, and to try to write a novel. It
is also the story of a young woman who moves back to the city she
left a few years earlier, and their relationship. Ask Me Tomorrow
was produced at the Sheffield Playhouse in 1965, and as a radio
play in 1966. The playscript was published by Samuel French in
1966. 3 women, 4 men

Cats are one of the most popular pets in the world and cat owners
want advanced veterinary care. There is a growing interest in
purebred cats which requires the highest quality reproductive care
from the general veterinary practitioners. In Feline Reproduction,
all aspects of reproduction in the queen and the tom are presented
by a global author team. Beginning with basic anatomy and normal
reproduction, this book reviews practical knowledge about feline
pregnancy, neonatal care, breeding soundness exams, and semen
cryopreservation. This book also provides the most current and
comprehensive information about abnormal conditions affecting
feline reproduction, such as infertility, spontaneous abortion and
contraception. Covering both pets and nondomestic species, this
feline reproduction book will prove to be essential for the general
veterinary practitioner, veterinary student, animal scientist, and
experienced cat breeder.
"It Happened in Gloucestershire is a vibrant and compelling account
of the county's diverse heritage; its heroes, its battles, its
inventors, its outlandish sports.Phyllida Barstow's lively prose
transports the reader across the county: from its stunning
cathedral to its swan lake at Slimbridge, taking us surfing the
Severn Bore, tumbling down Cooper Hill on the notorious Cheese
Race, round the challenging course at Badminton and to Imjin Hill,
site of the tragic stand of the Glorious Glosters. The book
celebrates those who have helped to put Gloucestershire on the map:
Eddie the Eagle, William Morris, Vaughan Williams, Desert Orchid,
William Tyndale, Richard III - as well as the varied claims to fame
of Concorde, GCHQ, the Cotswold Lions, the conqueror of small-pox,
the Gloucester Old Spot and the hardy miners of the Forest of Dean.

Far more than being about a single artwork, this book participates
in the myriad conversations and debates on the meaning of public
art. Essays by Mark Gevisser, Mpho Matsipa, Alexandra Dodd, and
Jonathan Cane and Zen Marie prise open critical questions about
public space in Johannesburg; Oliver Barstowís interviews with the
various collaborators on the sculpture?from the commissioning agent
to the steelworker?reveal the complexities and challenges of
creating such a massive work in so short a time (construction and
installation took a mere six weeks); and the extraordinary images
by John Hodgkiss of the making of the sculpture, alongside two
evocative photo essays on fire walker vendors (by Ben Law-Viljoen)
and old city monuments (by Alastair McLachlan), suggest the
metaphorical power of Fire Walker as well as the fragile hold of
street vendors over their small share of city space.
"In the sixteenth century, a rise in sexual violence in European society was exacerbated by pressure from church and state to change basic sexual customs...As the centuries since have shown escalating levels both of violence, general and sexual, and of state control, the witchcraze can be considered a portent, even a model, of some aspects of what modern Europe would be like." Over three centuries, approximately one hundred thousand persons, most of whom were women, were put to death under the guise of "witch hunts", particularly in Reformation Europe. The shocking annihilation of women from all walks of life is explored in this brilliant, authoritative feminist history Anne Llwellyn Barstow. Barstow exposes an unrecognized holocaust -- the "ethnic cleansing" of independent women in Reformation Europe -- and examines the residual attitudes that continue to influence our culture. Barstow argues that it is only with eyes sensitive to gender issues that we can discern what really happened in the persecution and murder of these women. Her sweeping chronicle examines the scapegoating of women from the ills of society, investigates how their subjugation to sexual violence and death sent a message of control to all women, and compares this persecution of women with the enslavement and slaughter of African slaves and Native Americans. Ultimately Barstow traces the current backlash against women to its gynophobic torture-filled origins. In the process, she leaves an indelible mark on our growing understanding of the legacy of violence against women around the world.
The European Workshop on White Dwarfs was initiated by Prof. V.
Weidemann, with the first meeting held in Kiel (FRG) in 1974. Since
then a similar workshop has been held almost every two years:
Frascati (1976), Tel Aviv (1978), Paris (1981), Kiel (1984),
Frascati (1986) and Toulouse (1990). Two major IAU colloquia have
also been devoted to the study of white dwarfs (No. 53, Rochester
NY, 1979; No. 114, Hanover, NH, 1988). Our most recent meeting, the
8th Workshop, marks a number of important advances in both
observational and theoretical studies of white dwarfs. This
coincides with a significant expansion in the size of the community
active in the field, as was clear from an increase in the number of
participants between this workshop (77) and that in Toulouse (46),
just two years ago. Key parts of any workshop are the discussion
sessions following the pa pers. However, these are difficult to
record and, very often, the 'live' flavour of the debates is lost.
During this workshop we carried out an experiment, recording the
discussion sessions on video tape and then transcribing these later
for the proceedings. Although the recordings were made in
non-studio conditions with regard to lighting and noise, only a
very small part was unin telligible. All participants were given an
opportunity to check their questions and answers for scientific
accuracy and to correct any errors arising in the transcription
process."
WATSU® is an innovative water-based therapy with roots in Japanese
Zen Shiatsu. Each chapter in this book enlightens practitioners on
the ways in which WATSU® is being used clinically by experts
across the globe in a variety of therapeutic settings. Its primary
purpose is to provide anecdotal, practical and clinical tools to
integrate the heart and science of WATSU® for special needs
populations. WATSU®'s unique movements, breathwork, intention,
embodiment and heart are steeped in a unifying theme of adaptation
across a plethora of therapeutic spectrums. Using frameworks that
are within the realms of aquatic rehabilitation, integrative
medicine and wellness program models, the authors discuss the
current research that is being documented. They explain how
therapists can dive into practice with a deep understanding of this
unique form of water therapy and use these techniques with clients
with PTSD, chronic pain and neuromuscular disorders, as well as in
palliative and hospice care and pediatric settings.
The book is devoted to a simplified set-theoretic version of
denotational semantics where sets are used in place of Scott's
reflexive domains and where jumps are described without
continuations. This approach has emerged as a reaction to the
sophisticated model of traditional semantics. It was also strongly
stimulated by the applications of denotational semantics and
especially by its software-industry oriented version known as VDM
(Vienna Development Method). The new approach was successfully
tested on several examples. Based on this approach the Polish
Academy of Sciences created the project MetaSoft aimed at the
development of a definitional metalanguage for software
engineering. The approach has also been chosen in the project RAISE
(ESPRIT) which aims at a similar goal. The book consists of two
parts. Part One is devoted to the mathematical foundations of the
future definitional metalanguage of MetaSoft. This part also
introduces an appropriate notation. Part Two shows the applications
of this metalanguage. There the denotational definition of a subset
of Pascal is discussed with particular emphasis on Pascal types.
Tibetan Buddhism teaches compassion toward all beings, a category
that explicitly includes animals. Slaughtering animals is morally
problematic at best and, at worst, completely incompatible with a
religious lifestyle. Yet historically most Tibetans-both monastic
and lay-have made meat a regular part of their diet. In this study
of the place of vegetarianism within Tibetan religiosity, Geoffrey
Barstow explores the tension between Buddhist ethics and Tibetan
cultural norms to offer a novel perspective on the spiritual and
social dimensions of meat eating. Food of Sinful Demons shows the
centrality of vegetarianism to the cultural history of Tibet
through specific ways in which nonreligious norms and ideals shaped
religious beliefs and practices. Barstow offers a detailed analysis
of the debates over meat eating and vegetarianism, from the first
references to such a diet in the tenth century through the Chinese
invasion in the 1950s. He discusses elements of Tibetan Buddhist
thought-including monastic vows, the Buddhist call to compassion,
and tantric antinomianism-that see meat eating as morally
problematic. He then looks beyond religious attitudes to examine
the cultural, economic, and environmental factors that oppose the
Buddhist critique of meat, including Tibetan concepts of medicine
and health, food scarcity, the display of wealth, and idealized
male gender roles. Barstow argues that the issue of meat eating was
influenced by a complex interplay of factors, with religious
perspectives largely supporting vegetarianism while practical
concerns and secular ideals pulled in the other direction. He
concludes by addressing the surge in vegetarianism in contemporary
Tibet in light of evolving notions of Tibetan identity and
resistance against the central Chinese state. The first book to
discuss this complex issue, Food of Sinful Demons is essential
reading for scholars interested in Tibetan religion, history, and
culture as well as global food history.
