Die erste internationale Tagung "Allgemeine Ungleichungen" fand vom 9. bis 15. Mai im Mathematischen Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach statt. Da Herr Bellman leider aus gesundheitlichen Grunden nicht teilnehmen konnte, hat sich glUcklicherweise Herr Beckenbach (Los Angeles) bereiterklart, zusammen mit den Herren Aczel (Waterloo, Onterio) und Aumann (Munchen) die Tagung zu leiten. Als Tagungssekratar wirkte Herr Ger (Ka.towice). Die ?:{ Teilnehmer kamen aus Europa, Amerika und Australien. Erfreulicherweise hat sich eine grtlssere Zahl von Teilnehmern aus Polen eingefunden; leider konnten keine Wissenschaftler aus Jugoslawien, Rumanien, der TBchechoslawakai und Ungarn kommen. Die Tagtmg wurde von Herrn Aczel eroffnet und von Herrn Aumann geschlossen. Zu der durch den Titel gegebenen allgemeinen Thematik haben die Teil- nehmer in sehr verschiedene Weise beigetragen. Trotzdem bildeten sich einige Schwerpunkte heraus: Funktionalungleichungen, inbesondere iterativen ~s, konvexe und verallgemejnert konvexe Funktionen, Differentialungleichungen, Ungleichungen der Funktionentheorie, Funktionalanalysis und Geometrie. Ferner wurden Anwendungen von Ungleichungen auf Differentialgleichungen, Physik, Warscheinlichkeits-, Informations- und Wirtschaftstheorie gebracht. Die als besondere Tagungspunkte augesetzten "Bemerkungen und Probleme" haben sich als ausserst fruchtbar erwiesen, ja sogar in einem Fall zur vollstandigen LOsung eines aufgeworfenen Problems gefuhrt. Die Tagung hat nicht nur gezeigt, dass das Netz von Ungleichungen, das die. gesamte Analysis durchzieht, verdient in eigenstandiger Weise und im Sinne allgemeiner Methoden behandelt zu werden, sondern auch bestatigt, wie viel schneller und wirksamer der Ideenaustausch ist, der durch die Vortrage und durch den personlichen Kontakt der Wissenschaftler untereinander zustande kommt, als die unpersonliche, nur literarische Information.

Since the elassie work on inequalities by HARDY, LITTLEWOOD, and P6LYA in 1934, an enonnous amount of effort has been devoted to the sharpening and extension of the elassieal inequalities, to the discovery of new types of inequalities, and to the application of inqualities in many parts of analysis. As examples, let us eite the fields of ordinary and partial differential equations, whieh are dominated by inequalities and variational prineiples involving functions and their derivatives; the many applications of linear inequalities to game theory and mathe- matieal economics, which have triggered a renewed interest in con- vexity and moment-space theory; and the growing uses of digital com- puters, which have given impetus to a systematie study of error esti- mates involving much sophisticated matrix theory and operator theory. The results presented in the following pages reflect to some extent these ramifications of inequalities into contiguous regions of analysis, but to a greater extent our concem is with inequalities in their native habitat. Since it is elearly impossible to give a connected account of the burst of analytic activity of the last twenty-five years centering about inequalities, we have d. eeided to limit our attention to those topies that have particularly delighted and intrigued us, and to the study of whieh we have contributed.

Die Autoren entfalten, ausgehend von der Schrift Diderots uber Gesellschaft ('Soziabilitat') und Industrie in der franzoesischen Enzyklopadie von 1752, ein Panorama der Diskurse von Gleichheit und Selbstbestimmung sowie, dazu kontrastiv, das Prinzip 'Souveranitat' als Begrundung fur autoritare und totalitare Sozialformen. Anhand historischer Quellen aus Literatur und Philosophie zeichnen sie Veranderungen nach, denen das Denken dabei unterworfen war. Bei der Aufklarung beginnend, fuhrt sie ihr Weg uber die Franzoesische Revolution, die 1848er Revolution, die Anfange der Arbeiterbewegung und des Anarchismus zu den Kulturavantgarden des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die Autoren verstehen ihre Arbeit als Beitrag zu einer Rekonstruktion der kritischen Theorie der Gesellschaft und des Subjekts.

Kaum merklich hat sich vermutlich seit den 90er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts eine neue Generation Jugendlicher formiert, die sich konstitutieren muss ohne Ruckgriff auf ein ganzes Arsenal an Utopien und politischer Visionen, die spatetstens mit dem Zusammenbruch des sogenannten Ostblocks obsolet geworden sind. Ein wesentliches Kernelement dieser Utopien war die Romantik und deren Ableger wie die Lebensreformbewegung oder die 68er Bewegung. Dementsprechend geht es um eine historische Kontrastierung: Jugend im Zeichen von Romantik und die Jugend nach der Romantik. Die Frage bleibt: Durch was wird Romantik ersetzt?
