This book introduces readers to environmental background
investigation, pollution source intensity evaluation and risk
assessment approaches used at three main types of
groundwater-contaminated sites: municipal domestic waste landfills,
hazardous waste landfills and oil-contaminated sites. In addition,
typical contaminated sites throughout China are examined to
demonstrate how these approaches can be applied for their
investigation, assessment and restoration. By reading this book,
readers will gain a deeper understanding of the restoration and
management of typical groundwater-contaminated sites.
This book describes the huge efforts by the Chinese Government
concerning the restoration and future sustainable management of
Chinese water systems. It presents the results of a Sino-European
joint project concerning the Songhuajiang-Liaohe River Basin (SLRB)
in Northeast China conducted by the Chinese Research Academy of
Environmental Sciences (CRAES), the Helmholtz Centre for
Environmental Research - UFZ, Germany, and the Natural Environment
Research Council as represented by the Centre for Ecology and
Hydrology (CEH), UK. The book explains in great detail the
development of risk assessment and corresponding management methods
for (i) controlling water pollution, (ii) assessing river health
and ecological restoration options, (iii) characterizing persistent
organic pollutants (POPs), and (iv) protecting fragile groundwater
resources. It also describes the implemented demonstration sites of
SLRB during the project course as well as lessons learnt on
efficient project management and the dissemination of knowledge and
technologies.
This book systematically introduces the key technologies for
differentiated resourceful utilization of rural organic wastes
based on high-efficiency anaerobic fermentation and bio-augmented
composting, and discusses differentiating sources of organic
wastes, integrating recycling technologies, developing key
equipment, and researching management mechanisms. In addition, it
describes the development of viable techniques and low-pollution,
low-cost, and low-maintenance equipment. It also includes the
technical specifications for the differentiated resourceful
utilization of rural organic wastes and presents the
energy-fertilizer integrated resourceful utilization method for

This book explores the application of the open-source software
OpenGeoSys (OGS) for hydrological numerical simulations concerning
conservative and reactive transport modeling. It provides general
information on the hydrological and groundwater flow modeling of a
real case study and step-by-step model set-up with OGS, while also
highlighting related components such as the OGS Data Explorer. The
material is based on unpublished manuals and the results of a
collaborative project between China and Germany (SUSTAIN H2O).
